Inter midfielder Luis Figo has confirmed his retirement from football following a glittering career and he will hang up his boots after the match against Atalanta.
The Portuguese ace has officially announced his plans via an open letter which has been published on the club's official website. Figo has spoken of his time as a professional over the years, and he has thanked the Nerazzurri as well as his former clubs.
The letter reads:
"Dear friends of Inter,
tomorrow, 31 May 2009, will be my last Sunday as a footballer. Together with my friends of Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Portugal, I would like to thank all of you, Inter fans, who have shown me affection since my first day in Milan.
"I am happy that my last Sunday as a player is with Inter and with the fans, a Sunday of celebration following our fourth consecutive Scudetto.
"Winning has always been my objective throughout my career and to win I have learned to sacrifice and work hard. Everyone has taught me this and everything I have won happened because of many sacrifices.
"To all the Interisti, a sincere hug and the conviction that Inter will continue to work and win even more.
"With affection,
Luis Figo."
Figo has won a number of majour honours during his career including the Ballon d'Or in 2000, and the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2001.
