Inter Defender Marco Materazzi Wins Libel Case Against Former Italian Senator

Roberto Salerno branded Materazzi a “thug” in 2005 and has now received a two-month suspended sentence.

That's right 'Matrix', four straight titles. Inter defender Marco Materazzi reminds everyone of his club's recent success
Former senator Roberto Salerno has been given a two-month suspended sentence after a verbal attack on Marco Materazzi in 2005.

Inter lost 2-0 to Juventus in Turin on October 2, 2005, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played for the Bianconeri at the time, was the victim of a scything foul at the hands of Inter centre-back Materazzi.

The ‘Matrix’ was only booked and admitted he had apologised to ‘Ibra’ after the final whistle, however, then-senator Roberto Salerno launched a stinging attack on the 2006 World Cup winner.

He branded Materazzi “a common thug” and “a bad example to youngsters” and went as far as calling for his exclusion from the Italian national side for being “too violent on the field of play”.

Materazzi sued the politician for defamation and La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Salerno was given a two-month suspended sentence yesterday.

The 35-year-old also won similar actions against several English tabloids in the wake of the 2006 World Cup final after claims he had insulted Zinedine Zidane before the Frenchman head-butted him.
