Fabio Cannavaro To Sign For Juventus
The Italy national team captain is almost certainly set to return to Turin, and only the official confirmation is missing...
Although there is no official confirmation from either club, it is reported in virtually every major media source in Italy, including Sky Sport 24, Tuttosport, Datasport and Goal.com Italia that a deal was done last night after Madrid's match with Recreativo. Cannavaro will join on a Bosman transfer when his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu runs out at the end of the current season.
Cannavaro was a major hit at Juventus between 2004 and 2006, winning successive Scudetti that were eventually revoked due to Calciopoli. He left Juve after the scandal when the club were relegated to Serie B, and joined Real Madrid.
With the Spanish giants, the Neapolitan has won two successive La Liga titles, while he was also crowned European and World Footballer of the Year for 2006 after winning the World Cup with Italy.
Despite some supporters being upset with him for leaving Juventus after Calciopoli, it is believed that the majority of fans will be delighted about his return.
Cannavaro turns 36 later this year but, when confirmed, his addition should certainly help shore up a shaky-looking Juventus backline. It is believed that Italy coach Marcello Lippi played a key role in pushing Cannavaro to Turin.
