Official: Christian Vieri Leaves Atalanta
The former Italy hitman has parted ways with the Bergamo-based outfit...
Earlier today, Goal.com reported that Christian Vieri was on the verge of rescinding his contract with Atalanta and now that news has been confirmed by the club's official website.
The striker has struggled with injuries and poor form since joining the club this summer, only making nine appearances in the league and scoring twice in the process.
The Orobici supporters jeered and whistled him during a recent friendly against Swiss side Bellinzona and the 35-year-old declared his will to leave the club. He then met with Atalanta officials who came to an agreement to mutually rescind his contract.
Atalanta chairman Alessandro Ruggeri was bitter about the situation, but admits he understood the former Inter player's reasons.
"I believe he was pushed to this decision by a number of things. He arrived at training two weeks early and had great enthusiasm. Then he became injured and had to redo his whole preparation," he said.
"He returned then picked up another serious knock. In short, he was quite unfortunate. In think if he had scored a few more goals the fans would have behaved differently, it's a shame."
