Juventus Captain Alessandro Del Piero Would Welcome Cassano Challenge

‘Pinturicchio’ insists he would greet Cassano with open arms at Juve and is confident he will return to the national side.

Juventus are expected to splash out on the transfer market in the summer and have targeted Sampdoria ace Antonio Cassano. Captain Alessandro Del Piero does not fear the increased competition for places if ‘Fantantonio’ moves to Turin.

“No offence, but my footballing career tells me I cannot fear the arrival of Cassano or any other player,” Del Piero told La Repubblica.

“However, I don’t think there would be a fierce competition, we have different roles and could easily play together. As long as we bring in champions, it’s all good.”

Italy are preparing for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and the Republic of Ireland but coach Marcello Lippi seems to be going forward with his project to rejuvenate the squad and called up only eight members of the team that triumphed in Germany in 2006.

“Lippi was really straightforward with me,” mused ‘Alex’. “He wants to see other players in action and just wants me to play and do well.

“I have come to terms with it. It’s not a problem and I’m sure it’s not a definitive choice. At least, Lippi did not convey this.”
