Milan Confirm Christian Abbiati Needs Surgery; Season Is Likely Over
Milan's first choice goalkeeper is likely to be out for the rest of term after the club confirm he needs surgery...
Milan have been dealt another major blow as tests to Christian Abbiati have confirmed the worst, and he will be out of action for the remainder of term.
The Italian shot-stopper went down against Siena after clashing with an opponent. Sky Sport Italia claim he has ruptured ligaments in his right knee, and now needs surgery.
A statement on the club's official website reads, "AC Milan would like to communicate that Christian Abbiati was visited by professor Martens in Antwerp on Monday.
"The controls revealed the extent of his injury, and he will now need two to three weeks of rehabilitation before returning to Belgium to undergo surgery."
The 'keeper has been first choice for the Rossoneri all season in Serie A, making a number of vital saves. Nelson Dida, who was first choice for the club's UEFA Cup campaign, will now take Abbiati's place in goal.
It is highly unlikely that the Italian will return to action this term as the injury plague spreads at Milanello.
