Ayub Daud grabbed plenty of column inches during the recent Viareggio Carnival Cup, one of the most important youth competitions in Italy.
The Somali hitman was the top scorer of the tournament, scoring 8 goals, and lead the Juventus Primavera side to their sixth triumph in Tuscany.
Daud’s efforts soon attracted interest from a host of European sides and the Old Lady acted swiftly at the start of this week to tie him down to his first professional deal.“It was a great pleasure to sign for Juve because they welcomed me when I was 9-year-old,” Daud told Calciomercato.it.
“They are like my second home and I was always hoping to get a contract here because I wanted to remain a Bianconero. [Sporting director Alessio] Secco complimented me for my achievements in Viareggio and then said we would have to meet at the club’s headquarters.
“Juve are always Juve. They are impeccable in everything they do, that is their style, the technical aspect is undisputed, as is their tradition. They always tell us: we are Juve, if you come in second, you will have failed.”
The 19-year-old was born in Somalia and has represented the country at Under-21 level, however, he has lived in Italy since he was 5 and could one day opt to play for the Azzurri.
“My dream is to wear the shirt of my national side - Somalia,” he mused.
“But it would not be that bad to wear the Italian jersey. Italy has raised me…”
