Alberto Zaccheroni Favourite To Succeed Edy Reja At Napoli

The Vesuviani are considering axing Reja after a seven-game winless run and ‘Zac’ could take over the Stadio San Paolo hot seat.

Napoli's slim hopes of re-entering the Champions League qualification race completely faded away yesterday, high-flying Genoa condemning the Partenopei to a 1-0 defeat at the San Paolo.

The Campani are in deep crisis, picking up only five points after the Christmas break and just two in their last seven outings.

After an excellent first half of the season, Edy Reja’s men have dropped to 10th place in the table and are even out of the UEFA Cup running at the moment.

President Aurelio De Laurentiis and director of sport Pierpaolo Marino called a crisis meeting in the locker room after yesterday’s reverse. Meanwhile, the fans protested outside the stadium.

TuttoNapoli.net claimed that Reja had tendered his resignation, but De Laurentiis allegedly rejected it.

However, Napoli24.com today reports that the club have drawn up a shortlist of replacements for the struggling coach. Among the names mentioned are former Italy boss Roberto Donadoni, Luigi De Canio and ex-Milan trainer Alberto Zaccheroni, with the latter favoured to get the nod.

Zaccheroni won the Italian league with Milan in the 1998-99 season, however, he has been out of a job ever since being sacked by Torino in February 2007.
