Milan can challenge for title next season, says De Sciglio

The 20-year-old defender says that he and his fellow Rossoneri youngsters will be all the stronger for their experiences during what has been a difficult campaign for the club
AC Milan full-back Mattia De Sciglio is supremely confident that the Rossoneri can challenge for the Serie A title next season.

Massimiliano Allegri's men struggled to cope with the loss of star duo Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Paris Saint-Germain during the early stages of the current campaign, but they regrouped superbly during the winter and are now one win away from a guaranteed third-placed finish.

Consequently, De Sciglio believes that what is a youthful-looking Milan line-up are only likely to get better in the coming years.

"This season AC Milan changed a lot and the youngsters, like me, have had a lot of space in the first team," he told

"Next season we will be more experienced and more confident about our possibilities, so I’m very confident [about challenging for the title]."

De Sciglio is in no doubt about just when Milan managed to salvage their season around either, arguing that the key result in their campaign was a 2-2 draw at the San Paolo last November.

"I think the turning point was at Napoli," he mused. "We were 2-0 down but in the end we drew thanks to Stephan El Shaarawy’s double.

"We started the season very badly and in the first half of that match, we looked at each other and we said together, 'We are AC Milan. We can’t play this way. We can’t stay in this position in the table.'

"That was the turning point of the season. Three days after Naples, we won in Brussels against Anderlecht and we reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Then, we defeated Juventus at San Siro."

Milan know that a win away to Siena this weekend will see them pip Fiorentina to third spot and the place in the Champions League preliminary stages that comes with it.
