Premier League Preview: Wigan Athletic - West Bromwich Albion

Premier League Preview: Wigan Athletic - West Bromwich Albion

Midweek Revival Gives Hope To Both Sides

Wigan have not won in their last five Premier League matches, but they will be buoyed by their performance against Liverpool when they came back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw. The Latics were unlucky not to take all three points against Liverpool and will be hoping that they get that little bit of luck back for this match.

West Brom had suffered back-to-back defeats before their visit to West Ham, but a spirited display in East London earned them a much needed point. The Baggies’ away form isn’t spectacular this season, despite their victory at the Emirates and draw at Old Trafford; they have lost against Chelsea, Liverpool and Blackpool and will be hoping they can avoid defeat at the DW Stadium.

First Encounter In The Dugouts

The match will be the first meeting between Martinez & Di Matteo as managers. They have both been in charge of their current clubs for 15 months and had successful campaigns last season. Di Matteo secured West Brom promotion to the Premier League in his first season while Martinez ensured Wigan’s survival in the top flight.
TEAM NEWS

Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez will be without defender Emmerson Boyce and midfielder James McCarthy, so Ronnie Stam and Tom Cleverley are expected to start in their places.

Defender Steve Gohouri will be available again following his recent suspension, so Martinez will have to decide whether to put the Ivorian back into the side or keep the same defensive line-up who performed so well in midweek.

Possible starting XI: Al Habsi; Stam, Gohouri, Alcaraz, Figueroa; Cleverley, Thomas, Diame, N’Zogbia; Gomez; Rodallega.

West Bromwich Albion

Peter Odemwingie returned to the West Brom starting line-up against West Ham, and got on the scoresheet, which will be a major boost for Roberto Di Matteo who will be hoping his summer signing can continue his rich goalscoring vein this season.

Midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu is available for selection again following his one match suspension, but Gonzalo Jara is serving the second of his three game ban following his red card against Blackpool.

Possible starting XI: Carson; Shorey, Ibanez, Tamas, Cech; Barnes, Scharner, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Brunt; Odemwingie.

The winger has scored three of Wigan’s last five goals in the Premier League and has been in inspirational form. The Frenchman may have been unsettled in the summer but he has focused on his football and produced a fantastic performance against recent suitors Liverpool in midweek. His trickery, pace and flair make him a tough man to mark and the Wigan strikers will hope to benefit from his creativity.

The Northern Irish winger is the creative link for the Baggies. He has a fierce strike with his left foot, and has scored 27 goals in his 101 games for the club, as well as setting up chances for his strikers. He has been an ever present for the club this season but will be hoping to add to the one goal he has scored so far.

Editor's Prediction

Both sides are struggling to find form in the Premier League but both managers will be hoping impressive performances in midweek can help turn their form around. History between these two sides dictates that there will be a winner, as the last six meetings in the league both sides have won three matches each, but a draw looks more likely.
