Wigan have not won in their last five Premier League matches, but they will be buoyed by their performance against Liverpool when they came back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw. The Latics were unlucky not to take all three points against Liverpool and will be hoping that they get that little bit of luck back for this match.
West Brom had suffered back-to-back defeats before their visit to West Ham, but a spirited display in East London earned them a much needed point. The Baggies’ away form isn’t spectacular this season, despite their victory at the Emirates and draw at Old Trafford; they have lost against Chelsea, Liverpool and Blackpool and will be hoping they can avoid defeat at the DW Stadium.
First Encounter In The Dugouts
The match will be the first meeting between Martinez & Di Matteo as managers. They have both been in charge of their current clubs for 15 months and had successful campaigns last season. Di Matteo secured West Brom promotion to the Premier League in his first season while Martinez ensured Wigan’s survival in the top flight.
Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez will be without defender Emmerson Boyce and midfielder James McCarthy, so Ronnie Stam and Tom Cleverley are expected to start in their places.
Defender Steve Gohouri will be available again following his recent suspension, so Martinez will have to decide whether to put the Ivorian back into the side or keep the same defensive line-up who performed so well in midweek.
Possible starting XI: Al Habsi; Stam, Gohouri, Alcaraz, Figueroa; Cleverley, Thomas, Diame, N’Zogbia; Gomez; Rodallega.
West Bromwich Albion
Peter Odemwingie returned to the West Brom starting line-up against West Ham, and got on the scoresheet, which will be a major boost for Roberto Di Matteo who will be hoping his summer signing can continue his rich goalscoring vein this season.
Midfielder Youssuf Mulumbu is available for selection again following his one match suspension, but Gonzalo Jara is serving the second of his three game ban following his red card against Blackpool.
Possible starting XI: Carson; Shorey, Ibanez, Tamas, Cech; Barnes, Scharner, Dorrans, Mulumbu, Brunt; Odemwingie.
