Andy Carroll led the line again for West Ham and after a very sticky start, they persevered to record their fourth win of the season. Thanks for reading!
Southampton's struggles go on. They remain mired in 17th, but all three of the teams below them have a game in hand, with Norwich City set to face Arsenal this evening. It doesn't get any easier for Nigel Adkins - Tottenham are the next team to visit St. Mary's. Ouch.
After a poor first half, West Ham bagged two goals immediately after half-time at Upton Park to set them on their way to a very comfortable victory. If scores around the league stay the same, they're up to seventh in the table.
90' + 4'
FULL-TIME: West Ham 4-1 Southampton
90' + 3'
The Southampton defence is already back in the dressing room, and when O'Neil delivers a cross Nolan, totally unmarked, heads just wide.
90' + 2'
Benayoun picks out Jarvis with an excellent cross from the right, but the winger is flagged offside in the centre of the penalty area. He wasn't.
Four minutes to be added on as we enter injury time.
Two substitutions - Jordan Spence has replaced Tomkins, who was limping again, at right-back for West Ham, and youngster James Ward-Prowse is on for Davis in midfield for the visitors.
Assist Kevin Nolan
Goal Modibo Maiga
GOAL! Maiga has his first Premier League goal to make it 4-1! It's a lovely effort, as West Ham win the scrap in midfield to get the ball to the striker. He is surrounded by three defenders but steps past Fonte before getting the ball out of his feet enough to poke a superb curling shot beyond Boruc.
Dispute between Reid and Jaaskelainen after a mix-up between the two nearly allows Lallana to steal in in the penalty area. Lambert's flick-on seemed to be heading for the goalkeeper but he did not come out to collect the ball, and Reid, who had looked to shield it back, was eventually forced to hack clear.
Carroll's work is done, as he is replaced by Modibo Maiga. He's hardly been exceptional today, but the pure disruption he causes is a nightmare for opposition defences, as evidenced by Fonte's silly foul in the lead-up to the third West Ham goal.
Yellow Card Morgan Schneiderlin
Schneiderlin is booked for a late challenge from behind on - you guessed it - Carroll as Southampton begin to lose their discipline somewhat.
Davis chips a decent ball down the right-hand side of the penalty area for Lambert to spin onto but the striker is just offside.
Yellow card for Hooiveld, who has been Southampton's best defender by a distance today but has now fouled Carroll one too many times for the referee's liking. Noble's free-kick hits the wall.
Yellow Card Jos Hooiveld
If this score stays the same, Southampton will have lost four out of four and conceded 15 goals away from home. Two today have come as a result of poorly defended set-pieces, and in that respect the Saints have only made things more difficult for themselves.
Penalty Goal Mark Noble
GOAL! Noble has his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot and West Ham lead 3-1! It's a baffling bit of defending from Fonte, who clearly pulls Carroll down from behind after the striker had won a header from Noble's free-kick. Noble sends Boruc the wrong way and the Hammers are headed for three points.
PENALTY TO WEST HAM!
Clyne finds space on the right to cross for Lambert, but he can't get his head around the ball and flicks it well wide.
West Ham bring on Gary O'Neil in midfield in place of Diame, who had a mixed afternoon. Allardyce seems to be shutting up shop, with Jarvis and Benayoun dropping deeper.
Lallana wins a free-kick in a good position and Lambert nearly makes an immediate impact, with his free-kick clipping the top of the net as it flies just over the crossbar. Jaaskelainen was rooted to the spot.
Southampton's goal is followed by a double substitution, as Lambert and Mayuka both come on up front in place of Puncheon and Rodriguez. The Saints need to take advantage of their forward momentum.
Assist Jay Rodriguez
Goal Adam Lallana
GOAL! Southampton have one back through captain Lallana! After some much better play ended with the midfielder just failing to pick out Rodriguez in the box, the Saints try again with more success. Rodriguez gets in behind Collins on the left and turns back inside before picking out Lallana across the penalty area. He spins off McCartney and fires a quick shot into the roof of the net past Jaaskelainen - a lovely finish.
Noble chips a quick free-kick into the path of Nolan, who races on to the pass and forces a good save from Boruc with a left-footed volley. Too easy again from Southampton's point of view.
Diame breaks forward from midfield but his pass is poor, with three men ahead of him, and cut out by Lallana. Very much a mixed bag from the Senegal international this afternoon.
Rickie Lambert can't be far away. Emmanuel Mayuka is also available from the bench for Southampton.
Half-chance for Yoshida, which is pretty much as good as it's got for Southampton. Puncheon does well on the right and cuts back a cross for the left-back, who is arriving around the edge of the box. He tries to turn Tomkins, though, taking too long to get his shot away and allowing Diame to recover and block a weak shot.
Davis pokes the ball into the path of Rodriguez down the right-hand side of the penalty area but the striker is just offside.
The ball has pinged around midfield since West Ham's two goals but Southampton are looking, as you would expect, somewhat shaken. The atmosphere around Upton Park certainly feels more positive.
After a poor first half, the match has turned dramatically in West Ham's favour in the space of just a couple of minutes. Nigel Adkins must be fuming - his team cannot continue to defend like this if they want to stay in the Premier League.
Assist Yossi Benayoun
Goal Kevin Nolan
GOAL! It's a quick-fire double and Southampton are reeling! Yoshida is caught in possession by Benayoun after a poor pass from Guly and the Israel international advances into the penalty area and rolls the ball across goal for Nolan to tap home at the far post.
Goal Mark Noble
GOAL! Noble gives West Ham the lead immediately after the break! After Carroll was fouled, the midfielder drifted a free-kick in towards the back post that evaded everyone and nestled in the corner. Collins' run across goal put Boruc off and the Polish goalkeeper was left rooted to the spot.
And we're off again! No changes at the break.
Of the six Premier League matches currently in progress, four are goalless, so at least we're not alone in witnessing something of a stinker so far. This is a really important 45 minutes for Southampton, though; unless West Ham dramatically improve, they have a big chance to claim a much-needed point or three.
Boos at Upton Park as the half-time whistle is blown. West Ham have been poor, with Jarvis the only real bright spark on the left. Southampton have kept the ball more effectively but are yet to create even a half-chance. Let's hope for a better second 45 minutes.
45' + 2'
HALF-TIME: West Ham 0-0 Southampton
Carroll heads a cross down that Benayoun looks to latch on to but Hooiveld blocks and its cleared. Carroll furiously protests for a penalty for handball but it seemed to hit Hooiveld on the chest.
West Ham's gameplan has centred around Carroll and it's not worked in the slightest. The striker has been outjumped and denied space very effectively by Southampton so far. The Saints haven't got much going in attack themselves, though.
Some promising play from Guly on the left ends in Yoshida losing control and running the ball out of play. This has not been terribly inspiring so far.
Noble's latest corner lands on the roof of the net. Allardyce has some thinking to do at half-time.
Jarvis and Diame combine again on the left and win a corner. Those two are looking like West Ham's best route to goal at the minute. Noble swings it in and Hooiveld does well to flick it away under a challenge from Collins for another corner. The Dutchman thought he was fouled and he was probably right.
Clyne hacks down Jarvis on the left and is lucky not to be booked. Tomkins is back on the pitch for the free-kick from Noble, which is headed clear by Guly at the near post.
Play is stopped for Tomkins, who has a knee problem. He pulled up under no challenge but is now back to his feet and may be able to walk it off.
Guly tries a quite ridiculous shot from about 40 yards out, which flies harmlessly wide. He was only a few yards inside the touchline.
Neither side has created anything like a real goalscoring oppportunity yet but Southampton are looking much the better team in possession and the West Ham fans are beginning to get slightly restless.
Good chance for Southampton to counter-attack after a West Ham free-kick is cleared. Puncheon does very well initially to hold the ball up on his own with two defenders nearby, but when his team-mates do arrive he takes too long to play a pass and eventually lofts one out of the reach of the three or four yellow shirts charging forward.
Diame is crowded out again in midfield and Puncheon wins a free-kick by running straight at Reid, who blocks him off. Rodriguez's chipped free-kick, though, is easily cleared.
Lallana wins a throw-in after a lovely first-touch to control a pass fired down the right channel. Southampton work Clyne into space on the same wing, but the full-back balloons his cross over the bar.
Collins fouls Lallana as he receives the ball into feet and tries to turn. Rodriguez and Puncheon both fancy the free-kick from about 30 yards out but the former blasts it a long way over the crossbar.
Sustained spell of pressure from West Ham but it's all very scrappy and they can't engineer anything to work Boruc. Southampton clear and have a decent counter-attack on but Puncheon's pass over the top is too long for Rodriguez.
Schneiderlin chips a pass into the chest of Rodriguez on the edge of the box, and the striker does well to shake off Tomkins, turn, and lift a deft half-volley just wide of the post. Jaaskelainen was scrambling and wasn't at all sure whether that was off-target or not.
Jarvis tries to slip in Diame on the left but Clyne blocks the pass and it's a corner. Noble crosses to the back post but Boruc looks much more commanding as he rushes out to claim the ball in the air.
First sign of life from West Ham. Jarvis shakes off Clyne and crosses, and Fonte can only clear as far as the arriving Tomkins. The defender tries a header on the run that might have troubled Boruc had Hooiveld not been in position to head clear.
West Ham are struggling to get into any kind of rhythm at the minute. Southampton have settled into their passing much better and the ball will not stick to Carroll when the home side go longer.
It's actually Yoshida, by the way, at left-back, with Fonte and Hooiveld in the centre. The latter looks to be tasked with keeping a lid on Carroll.
This time Puncheon goes to the back post, but although Hooiveld out-jumps Collins he can only weakly head the ball at Jaaskelainen.
Diame tries another run but has very little support and is stopped by Davis. He tries a quick pass over the top to Guly, but Jaaskelainen collects. Southampton come straight back though, and Clyne overlaps on the right to win a corner.
Decent start from Southampton. Puncheon wriggles into space 30 yards out and passes to Lallana on the right. He crosses low to his left and finds Guly, but the Brazilian's back-heel is scuffed and is cleared before it reaches Rodriguez.
Puncheon with another decent delivery from the corner arc, but this time it's cleared. Guly runs the ball out of play and tries to claim another corner by strolling nonchalantly into the penalty area but the referee correctly gives a goal-kick.
Artur Boruc looking very much like a player who hasn't played a game this season. He clears a routine back pass straight along the ground to Carroll, but the striker doesn't make the most of the opportunity with a wasteful shot.
Free-kick to Southampton from just inside the West Ham half is headed behind for a corner. It looks like Puncheon has totally scuffed his delivery, but it might have been intentional as it trickled through to Rodriguez in plenty of space in the centre of the box. The striker was stretching, though, and couldn't get any contact on the ball.
Diame strides forward - he's been an important player for West Ham so far this season - but his attempted through ball to Jarvis is cut out by Clyne.
And we're off!
I very nearly forgot to mention that we have a debutant in goal for Southampton. Artur Boruc, formerly of Celtic, is between the sticks today as Kelvin Davis continues to be restricted to a place on the bench. Paulo Gazzaniga has started the Saints' last few matches but he drops out of the squad entirely.
Southampton, meanwhile, reshuffle their back four, with Nathaniel Clyne returning at right-back. One of Jos Hooiveld or Jose Fonte will shift to left-back to replace Danny Fox, and the other will partner Maya Yoshida in the centre of defence. There's no place for Rickie Lambert, who is on the bench; Guly Do Prado comes in and Jay Rodriguez is in attack.
Some interesting selection changes from both sides. We'll start with West Ham, who introduce Yossi Benayoun on the right-hand side of midfield. The Israeli has played little more than half an hour so far this season but starts for the first time in place of the injured Ricardo Vaz Te. Guy Demel is also sidelined so James Tomkins will play right-back, but Winston Reid has been passed fit. Andy Carroll is up front.
Southampton (4-2-3-1): Boruc; Clyne, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Fonte; Schneiderlin, Davis; Do Prado, Lallana, Puncheon; Rodriguez. Subs: Davis, Seaborne, Mayuka, Reeves, Ward-Prowse, Chaplow, Lambert.
West Ham (4-2-3-1): Jaaskelainen; Tomkins, Reid, Collins, McCartney; Noble Diame; Benayoun, Nolan, Jarvis; Carroll. Subs: Spiegel, Chambers, Spence, O'Neil, Maiga, Cole, Hall.
Sam Allardyce's men have taken 11 points from their first seven games and sit in eighth place in the table. Southampton, on the other hand, have faced a difficult run of fixtures and currently escape the bottom three only by a point, having collected four in total so far. They are yet to pick up a point away from home.
Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon's Premier League clash between West Ham and Southampton. Both of these two sides are back in the top flight after winning promotion from the Championship last season but the Hammers have taken to the higher standard more comfortably so far.
