Live Commentary

  • So that's it from me on a fantastic day for those of a Liverpool persuasion. West Ham fans will point to the injury to Mohamed Diame as a major turning point in the match, but the Hammers drop into the bottom half for the first time this season. This is Nicholas McGee, signing off!
  • Lee Probert brings an excellent game of football to an end. West Ham looked to be heading to another fine win after a Mark Noble penalty and a Steven Gerrard own goal had put them in front following Glen Johnson's opener for the visitors. However, the Reds showed great fighting spirit and wrapped up the win thanks to a Joe Cole strike and an own goal from James Collins.
  • 90' + 4'
Just one minute of added time left, Liverpool look to have killed this one off.
  • 90' + 2'
Huge shouts for a penalty from the away side as Shelvey bursts into the box before being brought down by Winston Reid. Lee Probert waves away the claims and the travelling fans are indignant.
  • 90'
There will be five minutes of added time.
  • 88'
End to end stuff at the Boleyn Ground. Modibo Maiga sees two headed chances go begging, before Sterling breaks free on the counter and Jaaskelainen rushes out to produce an excellent chance and prevent a certain goal.
  • 87'
Passes are beginning to go astray for the home side, it looks as if this could be Liverpool's day.
  • 86'
    SubstitutionJoe Allen Sebastián Coates
  • 86'
    SubstitutionMatthew Taylor Modibo Maiga
  • 84'
So I guess it's fair to say that Diame's injury has had an impact on the game? Liverpool didn't look like scoring up until that point but have been rampant ever since.
  • 82'
Further replays suggest that it was James Collins who got the final touch for Liverpool's third goal. The dubious goals panel will surely take that away from Shelvey.
  • 79'
    Own Goal James Collins
  • 78'
That goal was Joe Cole's first in the Premier League since April 2011, when he netted in Liverpool's 5-0 win over Birmingham.
  • 76'
    Assist Raheem Sterling
  • 76'
    Goal Joe Cole
  • 76'
Liverpool are level again, and it's another West Ham old boy who scores for the Reds! Sterling plays a neat one-two with Shelvey before sliding an expertly placed pass into the path of Joe Cole, who powers the ball into the bottom corner.
  • 73'
    SubstitutionMohamed Diame James Tomkins
  • 73'
James Tomkins replaces the injured Diame. Can Liverpool take advantage of the Senegal international's absence?
  • 72'
Troubling times for West Ham, as Mohamed Diame falls to ground clutching his hamstring. The physio calls for the stretcher and that is the last thing Sam Allardyce's side needed with the likes of Andy Carroll already in the treatment room.
  • 71'
    SubstitutionLucas Leiva Jordan Henderson
  • 70'
More good play from Stewart Downing, the England winger crosses excellently for Shelvey, who heads wide of the near post.
  • 67'
Excellent save from Jaaskelainen, the West Ham keeper turns Raheem Sterling's curling effort over the bar after a smart pull back from Stewart Downing. The resulting corner is well defended by the home side.
  • 64'
West Ham seem content to allow Liverpool to keep the ball, the Hammers look a well organised defensive unit and do not appear in any danger of surrendering their lead.
  • 61'
Liverpool are very efficient in possession and play some nice football, but they certainly lack a cutting edge that a certain Luis Suarez may have been able to provide.
  • 58'
It is fair to say that the second half has yet to match the drama of the first. Precious little in terms of attacking flair so far.
  • 55'
West Ham are continuing to enjoy the better of the play in the early stages of the second period, Liverpool look shaky at the back and you sense there are a few more goals in this game.
  • 52'
Not much in the way of goalmouth action since the restart, that suits West Ham more than Liverpool, who look deflated at present.
  • 49'
West Ham have started the second half where they left off in the first, the Hammers look full of energy and endeavour.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionGuy Demel George McCartney
  • 46'
West Ham, who made one change at half-time with George McCartney replacing Guy Demel, get the second half underway.
  • The referee blows his whistle to signal half-time and it's West Ham who have the lead at the interval. Liverpool have been the better team for long periods but find themselves trailing after Mark Noble's penalty and a Steven Gerrard own goal cancelled out Glen Johnson's superb opener.
  • 45' + 2'
After such a great start to the game, it looks like it could be a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers will need to reinvigorate his troops at the break.
  • 45'
There will be three minutes of added time.
  • 44'
    Own Goal Steven Gerrard
West Ham have turned this game on it's head! Jarvis puts a superb delivery into the box and the ball is unfortunately turned into his own net by Steven Gerrard.
  • 41'
West Ham have their tails up now, Jarvis breaks free down the left but his cross is not a good one, the ball eventually falls to Carlton Cole, whose near post cross is headed over by Taylor.
  • 38'
    Yellow Card Matthew Taylor
  • 36'
    Penalty Goal Mark Noble
Mark Noble steps up and cooly slots the spot-kick into the bottom corner. Pepe Reina guessed the right way but the penalty was just too good.
  • 36'
Penalty to West Ham! Diame's volley is blocked by Joe Allen's hand and the referee points to the spot.
  • 34'
    Yellow Card Steven Gerrard
  • 34'
West Ham win a free kick on the edge of the area, Taylor curls it towards goal but Pepe Reina handles easily.
  • 32'
The home side are becoming more dangerous on the attack but still look vulnerable in defence, Liverpool win another corner, which is eventually cleared.
  • 31'
    Yellow Card Jonjo Shelvey
  • 29'
West Ham almost grab a leveller as Matt Jarvis whips a wicked delivery into the near-post which Daniel Agger is able to clear before Carlton Cole can prod home.
  • 28'
Stewart Downing seems to have reverted to left-back following the change.
  • 28'
It is left-back Jose Enrique, seemingly injured, who makes way for Cole.
  • 27'
    SubstitutionJosé Enrique Joe Cole
  • 26'
Looking like their could be an early change for Liverpool, Joe Cole is readying himself on the sideline.
  • 23'
The contest has died down somewhat since the goal. No real goalscoring opportunities to report.
  • 20'
West Ham seem to have woken up a little in the last few minutes and are gradually regaining a foothold in the contest. However it is difficult to see them equalising right now, Liverpool are still very much in control.
  • 17'
What a superb pass from Steven Gerrard, who finds Johnson marauding down the right with a pinpoint 30 yard ball. The attack eventually falls to nothing but that was excellent work from the Liverpool captain.
  • 14'
The home side look a bit shell-shocked following that goal and Liverpool are well on top, the visitors almost add a second as Raheem Sterling flashes an effort wide after more good work from Johnson.
  • 11'
    Assist Steven Gerrard
  • 11'
    Goal Glen Johnson
Liverpool take an unlikely lead and it's an absolute stunner from former Hammer Glen Johnson, the England international cuts in from the right hand side before unleashing an unstoppable shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen and into the top corner.
  • 10'
The Hammers are definitely the team on top at the moment and are building a nice bit of pressure, Liverpool have yet to mount any kind of threat going forward.
  • 7'
West Ham go close, Matt Jarvis hangs a cross into the path of Kevin Nolan, Liverpool are only able to clear as far as Mohamed Diame, who sees his shot deflected just wide of the post.
  • 5'
After Liverpool's fast start, it is the home side who are enjoying the lion's share of possession, the Reds are pressing quickly and in numbers however, and are not allowing Sam Allardyce's men to settle on the ball.
  • 3'
West Ham defend the set piece well and eventually clear, there is a decent atmosphere at the Boleyn Ground with both sets of fans in fine voice.
  • 2'
West Ham have yet to touch the ball. Liverpool win an early corner, bright start from the visitors.
  • 1'
    Liverpool get the game underway!
  • The teams emerge to the familiar chorus of 'I'm forever blowing bubbles' from the home fans. We are almost ready for kick-off at Upton Park.
  • For Liverpool, Stewart Downing replaces Luis Suarez, who is banned. Jonjo Shelvey is expected to start at the head of the attack, while Steven Gerrard returns after missing the win over Udinese in midweek.
  • So West Ham make two changes from the team that started against Chelsea last time out. Mohamed Diame and Matt Taylor, who were pivotal in that win over the Blues after coming off the bench, replace Matt Taylor and James Tomkins.
  • Subs: Jones, Cole, Henderson, Coates, Carragher, Suso, Morgan.
  • Liverpool: Reina; Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique; Lucas, Allen, Gerrard; Downing, Sterling, Shelvey.
  • Subs: Spiegel, McCartney, Tomkins, Spence, O'Neil, Moncur, Maiga.
  • West Ham: Jaaskelainen; Demel, Collins, Reid, O'Brien; Noble, Diame; Jarvis, Nolan, Taylor; Cole.
  • We start, as always, with the two team line-ups....
  • Good afternoon and welcome to's live coverage of West Ham vs Liverpool. I'm Nicholas McGee and I'll be taking you through the next 90 minutes as both teams look to continue their good recent form.
