Live Commentary

  • That's all from me, Rhys Turrell, head over to Goal.com's main site for all the reaction, and coverage of all this afternoon's Premier League action.
  • Two of his substitute's got vital goals, and for Rafa Benitez, his difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge goes on.
  • West Ham bombarded the visitors with aerial pressure and pace down both flanks. Credit to Sam Allardyce, he made the changes at the break which changed the nature and course of the game.
  • Well, I certainly did see that coming at half-time. Chelsea dominated their hosts throughout the opening period but they really upped their game and deserved to win on their second-half showing.
  • 90' + 4'
It's the last chance of the game though, and it's a famous win for West Ham.
  • 90' + 3'
Torres has a good chance in the area, but it's saved well by Jaaskelainen.
  • 90' + 1'
    Goal Modibo Maiga
GOAL! It's a third for West Ham and it's game over. Ashley Cole gives the ball away to substitute Maiga, he finds Taylor, whose shot is saved by Cech, but only palmed out as far as Maiga who slams it home.
  • 90'
    Four added minutes.
  • 88'
You'd think Chelsea would be on top trying to get back into this - but that couldn't be further from the truth. Nolan wins his side yet another corner.
  • 87'
    Substitution Carlton Cole Modibo Maiga
  • 86'
    Assist Carlton Cole
  • 86'
    Goal Mohamed Diame
GOAL! The comeback is complete! Mo Diame slams the ball home to send the home fans delirious. It's so simple, though. Carlton Cole holds up the ball well, lays it off for Diame who finds room on the edge of the area and smashes hard and low past Cech. It's probably deserved on this second-half showing.
  • 83'
Two shots in as many minutes for Chelsea. Marko Marin's effort is easily saved by Jaaskelainen, and Oscar blazes over from a good central position.
  • 82'
Ashley Cole heads off the line. Taylor whips in a corner, and it is met by the head of Reid who powers a header at goal. He lots Ramires with ease there.
  • 81'
Noble plays in Jarvis with a defence-splitting pass, but Cech does well to deny the former Wolves man.
  • 81'
Big ten minutes coming up for Chelsea here. They should have won this game by half-time, they now need to make their pressure count now.
  • 80'
Chelsea are not so much knocking on the door here, as hammering it down. They've got loads of possession, but no clear chances as yet.
  • 79'
Corner Chelsea. Torres puts a wonderful cross into the area which tantalisingly avoids any Chelsea shirts in the area.
  • 78'
    Substitution Victor Moses Marko Marin
Moses is replaced, why?! He's been a threat throughout with his pace.
  • 77'
Ramires and Mata link-up well in the heart of midfield and move forward with purpose. The latter's shot is blocked, though.
  • 75'
Neither side are producing any out-and-out chances here, but Chelsea look the more likely to make their pressure count.
  • 73'
Head tennis in the Chelsea area comes to nothing other than West Ham corner. Taylor takes it, and Winston Reid gets a head on the ball, but it's well saved by Cech.
  • 72'
    Substitution Eden Hazard Oscar
  • 72'
Hazard very nearly embarrasses Jaaskelainen when the Finn bowls the ball clear but right into the path of the Belgian. His chip is over the bar however.
  • 71'
Chelsea just putting a bit more pressure on now. There's no doubt they're more smooth on the ball than West Ham, and are happy to move the ball quicker on the floor.
  • 70'
Substitute Mo Diame threatens the clouds with a shot from around 30 yards. That was an opportunistic blast at goal, and it was not good.
  • 69'
West Ham's Noble pops in a corner but it's not great, and is easily cleared by the head of Torres.
  • 68'
He might be a bit basic, but Carlton Cole is certainly a trier. His header into Cech's bottom right corner lacked pure quality, but he wanted it more, and his desire to work hard for his team has been evident this afternoon.
  • 66'
We've got a real game on our hands here. Great tempo from both sides, and this could go either way. A big 25 minutes await...
  • 65'
    Yellow Card Mark Noble
  • 65'
What an effort from Juan Mata. His free-kick central from 25 yards slaps back off the post. Fantastic strike.
  • 64'
    Yellow Card John Obi Mikel
  • 63'
    Goal Carlton Cole
GOAL! Carlton Cole scores. For the first time this game Jarvis gets the better of Azpilicueta, his cross gets a slight deflection and Cole stands his ground and heads in. Very soft, but on their second-half showing, they deserve it.
  • 63'
Chelsea will have to question the space and ease afforded to Cole there. Cech didn't come, and he got above his defender far too easily.
  • 61'
Matt Taylor is left footed, and boy did it show there. He takes on Ashley Cole with a dribble but the England man knows full well of his quality left peg, so shows him onto his right. His cross/ shot/ pass was awful. So awful, I'm not entirely sure what it was.
  • 60'
He might not be able to score, but Torres' work off the ball is still very good. He evades two or three tackles before being fouled and winning his side a free-kick.
  • 58'
Bit of proof there if you needed it that Chelsea relish diagonal balls rather than anything central. Their worst free-kick of the game comes when Noble hoofs the ball into the middle, and it's easily gathered by Cech.
  • 56'
Great chance West Ham. Once again, they're new-found quick tempo has caused a problem. They take a throw-in without a moment's hesitation, and it catches Chelsea cold. The ball comes to Nolan but Cech is alert and the ball is cleared. The visitors need to wake up.
  • 56'
Jarvis wins a corner as his interesting dual with Azpilicueta continues.
  • 55'
Fernando Torres has six goals in as many games against West Ham, will he add another today? Probably not, he's not very good.
  • 53'
Whether you like it or not, West Ham's style can be effective. They look like a different team after the break. Their intensity has been brilliant, and in the introduction of Matt Taylor they have a player who can cross the ball with real quality. All of sudden Chelsea's defenders have some actual defending to do.
  • 51'
I don't want to pick out individual players for criticism - but I'm going to. Guy Demel once again gives the ball away in an attacking position for West Ham - he's been poor.
  • 50'
One from the training ground there - and the ref blows up for a foul. Noble tries an in-swinging corner, Nolan stands in front of Cech, but the official claims the Irons skipper was fouling the Czech.
  • 49'
Good corner routine, and Diame lashes a shot towards goal which deflects off several bodies on it's route to goal.
  • 47'
Cole heads over from open play for West Ham after a good attack from Taylor and Jarvis. They've come out of the traps quickly.
  • 46'
    Substitution Gary O'Neil Matthew Taylor
Taylor will link-up with Jarvis an add real width on both sides for the Irons.
  • 46'
    Substitution James Tomkins Mohamed Diame
Tomkins was a bit absent in the first half, and the more mobile Diame comes on to replace him.
  • 45'
Torres is through on goal, but is flagged (rightly) for offside after a through ball from Mata.
  • 45'
    Chelsea get the second-half underway.
  • There's a giant Hammer breakdancing on the side on the pitch - guess it must be time for the second-half then.
  • Carlton Cole has worked hard for the Hammers, but quite frankly, he doesn't have the quality of a Andy Carroll, and it shows. West Ham look dangerous from set pieces and when they hang deep crosses into the area, but are tame from open play.
  • Chelsea will be happy to have a first goal under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez, but they should be out of sight, such has their superiority been so far. Mata, Hazard and Moses are causing lots of problems, and Ramires is running the centre of midfield with his energy totally overwhelming the Irons players in that position.
  • Well it's half-time and West Ham frankly need it. They've been poor, and made things far to o easy for their visitors.
  • 45'
Collins blasts the free-kick towards goal, and it bounces around before Cech redeems himself with a good save from a header on the edge of the six-yard box. That was quality from the big Chelsea number one.
  • 44'
    Yellow Card Petr Cech
Petr Cech handball! James Tomkins aimlessly lobs the ball towards the Chelsea area and for reasons only known to himself, Cech comes flying out and punches over the head of his defender. He gets a needless yellow card. Why on earth did he do that? So unnecessary, there were several defenders in the way of that.
  • 41'
Ramires shows his quality there with an outstanding through ball from a central position. His pass evaded everyone and nearly reaches Ashley Cole who had kept on running from left-back. It would have been 'assist of the season' if a goal came of that.
  • 41'
Moses has been a real threat for Chelsea today. He's quick and direct, and has a good end product.
  • 40'
Great chance once again for Mata. Moses leaves two for dead on the edge of the area, and squares for Mata who gets a good contact on the ball on the edge of the siz-yard box, but Joey O'Brien comes out of nowhere to block.
  • 39'
Chelsea are very easy on the eye when on the ball. They're passing the ball with real tempo and seem to be able to pass through West Ham with ease when they want to.
  • 37'
Noble slips as he takes it, and Tomkins only heads the ball into Mikel. Scrappy all round that.
  • 37'
Corner to West Ham. I wonder what's coming here...
  • 35'
West Ham certainly do take aerial to a new level sometimes. They're swinging in crosses all the time now, trying to force an area from Petr Cech. He's stood up well to the bombardment though.
  • 34'
Shot by Torres - saved. Comfortably. Surprised much?
  • 32'
The ball is in the net! But it's ruled out after a foul by Collins. West Ham take a quick free-kick and find Jarvis in space on the left, he pops the ball into a melee in the area, but there are fouls galore, and it's a simple decision for the referee.
  • 31'
Chelsea threaten again, and Demel is forced to put the ball behind for another Blues corner. There's a bit of a ding-dong in the area as the ball is played in, and Hazard eventually finds himself on the ball in time and space bu his shot from the right corner of the penalty area is high. Good chance, though.
  • 30'
Eden Hazard has been buzzing around a lot today. He nicks the ball off a defender and exchanges passes with Mata. He finds Ramires, but the Brazilian's touch is heavy and he concedes possession.
  • 28'
Azpilicueta looks like a talented player. After good play between Hazard and Mata in the centre of the park, the ball comes to the full-back and his cross is dangerous, but missed by all the Chelsea attackers.
  • 28'
Also, or what it's worth, the man I picked out beforehand as a key player - Hammers captain Kevin Nolan - has been totally anonymous.
  • 27'
West Ham build up play well - until they reach the final third that is. Demel gives the ball away, when a simpler pass would have sufficed.
  • 25'
Yet another rapid counter-attack from the visitors. Noble gives the ball away on the edge of the Blues' area, and Ramires picks up and races up field, he eventually finds Torres but his effort is poor, and clears the bar by some distance.
  • 24'
Better from West Ham as Jarvis wins a free-kick in the far left corner.
  • 23'
West Ham just need to get some composure back into their game here. They've lost their way a little in the last five to 10 minutes.
  • 21'
Another one of those counters from Chelsea. Azpilicueta robs O'Brien and speeds down the right, eventually winning a corner.
  • 19'
It comes to nothing as Jaaskelainen comes to gather Mata's delivery. He quickly bowls the ball out to Demel, but he is dispossessed by Ramires who gallops down the left and squares for Moses, but his shot is well wide. He should have done better with that.
  • 19'
Mark Noble concedes a foul near the right-hand touchline. A dangerous free-kick awaits.
  • 18'
No wonder the Chelsea fans are singing the praises of Juan Mata - he's just ended a goal drought of more than five and a half hours.
  • 17'
Chelsea have seen a lot more of the ball since the goal. They don't concede many, but West Ham are wise enough to know they have plenty of time to get back into the game.
  • 15'
Also worth noting the pivotal role that Torres played in the goal. His run and first time pull-back into the area left Mata with the simplest of chances and he tucked it away with ease.
  • 14'
Bit unfair on West Ham, that. They've not allowed Chelsea much pressure, but they've just proved their quality in the final third. The goalless spell is over...
  • 13'
    Assist Fernando Torres
  • 13'
    Goal Juan Mata
GOAL! Chelsea score with their first chance! Victor Moses finds room on the right, Fernando Torres makes a good run to the byline and is found by the former Wigan man. Torres plays a ball back towards the penalty area where it is met by Juan Mata who strokes home first time into the bottom corner. Really clinical goal.
  • 10'
Chelsea are finding it hard to get through West Ham. The Irons are very tight through the middle, and are playing deep as well.
  • 8'
A dangerous free-kick comes to nothing for West Ham, by my was it easy to create a dangerous chance. A long boot forward from James Collins is met by the head of his defensive partner Winston Reid and his header across the box goes begging, before eventually there is a foul. Far too easily lost his marker.
  • 7'
Chelsea look very rapid of the counter today. Gary O'Neil gives the ball away on the halfway line, when he is robbed by Victor Moses, he feeds Eden Hazard who's cross comes to nothing. That's a warning though.
  • 5'
Corner to West Ham after good link-up play between Cole and Matt Jarvis. It doesn't come to anything, however, as Petr Cech gets enough on the corner to clear.
  • 4'
First shot of the afternoon for the Irons, and it's rubbish. Guy Demel's effort is well wide.
  • 3'
West Ham enjoy an excellent period on the ball, knocking it around with purpose and quality. They overuse it however, and concede possession.
  • 2'
It comes to nothing, however, and the hosts clear easily.
  • 2'
Lively start from Chelsea, they win an early corner after a quick counter-attack.
  • 1'
West Ham get us underway in east London.
  • Can Rafa Benitez get his first win in charge of Chelsea, or that said, a first goal? Stay in touch with your comments.
  • Sam Allardyce has just revealed that Andy Carroll has a knee 'trauma' and could be out for up to two months. He'll be a massive loss for the Hammers, love him or loathe him, he's a massive threat and ideal for the Irons style of play.
  • We're five minutes away from kick-off...
  • That said, Rafa Benitez's record against 'big' Sam Allardyce is not the best. In five clashes as Liverpool manager, the Spaniard only managed one win, with two draws and two defeats.
  • It's worth noting that Chelsea have an excellent record at the home of their London rivals - they haven't lost at Upton Park under the reign of Roman Abramovich.
  • Four changes for 'tinkerman' Rafa Benitez. David Luiz is suspended so Gary Cahill comes in to partner Branislav Ivanovic at the heart of the Blues defence. Juan Mata is recalled, and Victor Moses comes in for Oscar. Mikel replaces Oriel Romeu.
  • Chelsea: Cech; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill, Cole; Ramires, Mikel; Moses, Mata, Hazard; Torres.
  • The big news for the home side is the unavailability of Andy Carroll - he'll be a big miss for the home side. Mark Noble returns to the midfield after missing the midweek loss at Manchester United, and he will line up alongside James Tomkins in a shielding role in front of the Irons back four.
  • West Ham: Jaaskelainen; O'Brien, Reid, Collins, Demel; Tomkins, Noble; O'Neill, Nolan, Jarvis; Cole.
  • I'm Rhys Turrell and I'll be taking you through all the action in east London today. The teams are in, so without further ado, here's how they line-up...
  • Good afternoon and welcome to Goal.com's coverage of this afternoon's Premier League clash between West Ham and Chelsea at Upton Park.
