Live Commentary

  • Thank you for joining me today. I hope you have enjoyed the action. Farewell until next time.
  • The referee decides enough is enough and ends the match right on the 90 minute mark. Bremen claim a morale-boosting 3-0 win against Chelsea after producing an encouraging display in front of their own fans. Two penalties, one from Elia and another from Kroos, ultimately played a big role, while Obraniak netted the game's only open-play goal with a precise header. Chelsea put in a very poor display, rarely threatening Wolf in the Bremen goal and Mourinho will undoubtedly let them know just how unimpressive they were.
  • 90'
    FULL-TIME!
  • 89'
    Penalty GoalFelix Kroos
  • 89'
GOAL!!! Bremen get a third and effectively end this contest. The penalty may have been harsh, but Kroos was in no mood to miss as he stepped up and coolly slotted his penalty to the left, beating Cech, who did guess the correct direction.
  • 88'
    Yellow CardNathan Ake
  • 88'
PENALTY TO BREMEN! Petersen runs through to latch on to a pass from the midfield and he has only Ake for company. The Dutch defender produces a last-ditch tackle and seemingly pokes the ball away fairly, but the referee points to the spot!
  • 87'
Hazard has been somewhat quiet since coming on. He finally gets another chance to run at the Bremen defence, but Husing reads the Belgian's movements very well and is able to dispossess the former Lille man.
  • 85'
Things have livened up a bit in the last five minutes or so. Both sides are pushing forward and looking a little suspect at the back. Are there more goals in this?
  • 83'
Chelsea's corner is dealt with brilliantly by Wolf, who springs an instant counterattack. Bremen charge forward down the right and Aycicek squeezes a cross into the danger area. His powerful, low delivery evades Cech and strikes Baker, but the defenders manage to deal with it.
  • 81'
Drogba does well to hold off a couple of challenges after drifting to the left. He then picks out a cross-field ball for Ivanovic, who gets forward into the attacking third. The Serbian cuts a low cross into the area, but Bremen intercept before Boga can knock it in and Chelsea must settle for a corner.
  • 79'
Unsurprisngly, considering the sheer amount of changes, this match has very little flow to it and it is not very fluid. Hopefully it doesn't just peter out, but the current state of play suggests it will.
  • 77'
Meanwhile, Husing, Aycicek and Kobylanski replace Caldirola, Junuzovic and Garcia for Bremen.

Drogba now gets the captain's armband as Terry leaves the pitch. Baker slots into his place.
  • 75'
Drogba has another sight of goal, but this effort is far worse than his last. The Ivorian is played in towards the right side of the area and, with his marker refusing to put a foot in, he shoots from a fairly narrow angle and he slices well wide.
  • 74'
The free-kick comes to nothing as Chelsea clear their lines, but Bremen remain in the final third, keeping the visitors around their own area for a few moments.
  • 73'
Free-kick to Bremen. Gebre Selassie shows typical attacking intent as he races towards the Chelsea penalty area down the right flank, but he is unfairly tripped by Ake.
  • 71'
Chelsea make another change. Boga comes on to take the place of Azpilicueta. The youngster will slot in on the right wing, where the Spaniard had been since Ake's introduction.
  • 70'
Drogba finally has a sight of goal, but he doesn't make the most of it. Hazard is played into the Bremen half and he has just two defenders for company. He is caught, but he cuts back on himself and then plays the ball into space for Drogba. The forward spots Wolf off his line and he tries to lob the keeper, but his effort lands on the roof of the net.
  • 69'
Important intervention from Cech as Junuzovic delivers a good corner from the left. His set-piece is curled into the goalmouth and the goalkeeper punches well to avoid a third Bremen goal.
  • 67'
Chelsea have been better in the second half, but they still don't look particularly dangerous. They may be keeping Bremen encamped in their own half, but Mourinho's men are not exactly peppering the hosts' goal with shots.
  • 65'
Hajrovic is given an unceremonious welcome to the match as he is hit with a forceful challenge from Fabregas. The Bosnian appears to be OK, however.
  • 63'
Drogba is looking a little frustrated out there at the moment. The Chelsea legend has hardly had a kick since coming on at half-time and he doesn't look very happy about it.

Here come a host of Bremen changes. Fritz, Di Santo, Galvez, Obraniak, Elia and Bartels all head for the bench, with Hajrovic, Petersen, Makiadi, Busch, Gebre Selassie and Kroos taking their places.
  • 59'
Another Bremen attack is nipped in the bud to good effect by Chelsea. The German sides tried to find a way down the right with Bartels, but Azpilicueta did well and halted things before danger brewed.

  • 57'
Here come a couple of extra Chelsea changes. Eden Hazard and Nathan Ake enter the pitch, while Salah and Torres make way.
  • 55'
Azpilicueta is calling for a penalty as he latches on to the end of a long ball played down the left from midfield. He meets the pass with a first-time cross and it strikes the arm of Caldirola, but the referee ignores his protests.
  • 53'
Bremen are struggling to produce any meaningful passages of passing in the Chelsea half currently. They looked set to launch an attack a moment ago, but Junuzovic was slightly clipped and asked for a free-kick, which he didn't get. Chelsea swiftly broke forward again.
  • 51'
Chelsea have started the second half fairly well. They are dictating the play and keeping Bremen pegged back around their own penalty area. They certainly can't complain about a lack of experience either.
  • 49'
Decent early chance for Chelsea. Fabregas floats a free-kick in towards the back post and Torres manages to flick it on with a header. His effort goes just wide, with Drogba not quite able to reach it.
  • 47'
Cech, Drogba, Cahill, Ivanovic and Mikel are all on for Chelsea at the start of this second half.

We are back underway for the second half.
  • The referee doesn't add any minutes for stoppage time and calls a halt to the first half. It had a few moments of entertainment, but Chelsea have generally looked unspectacular and appear to be lacking creative influence in the middle, even with Fabregas playing. Bremen deserve their lead due to being more clinical, but hopefully proceedings will be a little better after the break.
  • 45'
    HALF-TIME!
  • 44'
The visitors craft probably their best chance with the final kick of the half. Torres latches on to Filipe's pass and, thanks to a ricochet, is able to get a shot away. However, his effort on the stretch is denied by the foot of Wolf.
  • 43'
Well, Chelsea find the back of the net but it is not allowed to stand due to offside. For once they actually produced some intricate football as Fabregas and Costa linked up on the edge of the area and the latter threaded a pass into the danger zone for Salah, but the Egyptian strayed offside before stroking in.
  • 41'
Chelsea have been thoroughly unimpressive in this. They looked lively during the first 15 minutes or so, but ever since Mourinho's men have appeared bereft of creative ideas and unable to cut through the Bremen defence.
  • 39'
The hosts threaten again. This time the attack in the inside-right channel as Junuzovic marches towards the area. The attacking midfielder pokes a pass into the area, but it ultimately runs straight through to Courtois.
  • 37'

    GoalLudovic Obraniak
GOAL!!! BREMEN DOUBLE THEIR LEAD! Filipe fails to halt a Bremen attack down his flank and the ball is squeezed into the area by Bartels. Obraniak darts in from of Terry to meet the cross and produces a fantastic header, sending the ball right into the bottom-left corner, beyond the reach of Courtois!
  • 36'
There is a decent opportunity, though! A cross from the right evades Diego Costa and drops to Torres at the back post, but, after taking a touch, he fires over the crossbar. Very poor.
  • 34'
This match hasn't really carried on from the opening 10 minutes. The early stages of this encounter were fairly entertaining, with both teams looking positive and willing to attack, but there have not been many clear-cut chances from either side.
  • 32'
The corner is rather wasted by Bremen and Chelsea are immediately on the counterattack. Costa manages to get into the area and he goes to ground under pressure from Galvez, but the Spanish defender initially slipped and accidentally tripped his compatriot. No penalty given.
  • 31'
Corner for Bremen. Obraniak finds space on the left, but Azpilicueta is quickly on him. The midfielder tries to squeeze a cross into the area, but it is deflected behind.
  • 29'
That's a little naughty from Costa. The Spain forward attempts to get on the end of Torres' cross in from the left, but he barges into Wolf after the goalkeeper had collected. The referee has a word with him.
  • 28'
Fabregas' delivery beats the wall, but it is swiftly headed out by a Bremen defender. That really was such a waste and you'd expect much better from a play of Fabregas' ability.
  • 27'
Chelsea win themselves a free-kick in a great position now, though. Fabregas stands over the ball out towards the right flank, now far from the area. This is a good chance for a reply.
  • 25'
Matic goes in a little clumsily there. Bremen won possession back in their own half and Obraniak looked to take the ball into Chelsea's side of the pitch, but he is tripped by Matic after initially skipping past the Serb.
  • 23'
The visitors are looking a little short of ideas at the moment and Filipe somewhat sums up their unimaginative play by smashing a long ball up towards Costa, but Galvez shepherds it back to Wolf.
  • 21'
Chelsea eye an immediate response, but they are unable to make ground down the left flank as the trio of Filipe, Costa and Torres ultimately lose the ball. Bremen are dealing well with the Chelsea attackers so far.
  • 20'
    Penalty GoalEljero Elia
  • 19'
GOAL!!! BREMEN TAKE THE LEAD! Eljero Elia steps up to take the penalty and he calmly finds the bottom-right corner, beating Courtois, who did dive the correct way.
  • 18'
PENALTY TO BREMEN! John Terry is left with egg on his face as he uses his arm to block an incoming cross form the right flank and the referee correctly points to the spot.
  • 16'
Garcia needs some medical attention here. The defender produced a strong challenge on the advancing Salah, but he ultimately came out as the injured party.
  • 14'
Fabregas fires the free-kick into the danger area, producing a curling delivery towards the back post. Zouma rises and almost gets to it, but the ball sails harmlessly wide of the goal.
  • 13'
Chelsea win another free-kick. This time Costa goes on a long, mazy run and, after holding off Lukimya, the centre-back eventually fouls his counterpart. Costa appears to catch Lukimya with a flailing arm and words are exchanged, but the referee calms things down.
  • 11'
Good play by Van Ginkel as he bursts away from one challenge in an attempt to get a counterattack moving. The midfielder is stopped in his tracks soon enough, though, with Fritz bundling him over unfairly out wide.
  • 10'
Bright start to the match so far. Both sides look not only intent on attacking, but capable of causing problems. This bodes well from an entertainment perspective and hopefully it continues.
  • 8'
GREAT SAVE BY COURTOIS! The corner may have been cleared by Chelsea, but Bremen are quick to get the ball back into the danger zone. Di Santo rises to meet the cross with a header, but Courtois gets down and palms it away.
  • 7'
Bremen win a corner. The Germans do well to work the ball out to the left and Elia beats Azpilicueta before digging a cross out. Zouma nods it behind, giving Bremen a good opportunity.
  • 7'
Chelsea almost work the match's first opening. Matic does well to escape the attentions of a couple of defenders over towards the left and then plays a one-two with Torres. The midfield finally gets the ball into the area with a low pass, but Van Ginkel is tackled at the crucial moment.
  • 5'
Bremen finally get themselves a prolonged spell in possession, but they almost play themselves into danger as the ball is worked back to Wolf. The goalkeeper skews his clearance as Costa lurks.
  • 3'
Chelsea have seen a great deal of the ball during these opening exchanges. The visitors are stroking it around well as they size up today's opponents.
  • 1'
Off we go. Chelsea start the action in Bremen.
  • The two teams are out on the pitch as kick-off approaches. There is a great atmosphere at the Weserstadion today.
  • Bremen subs: Strebinger, Husic, Makiadi, Ekici, Hajrovic, Kroos, Kobylanski, Avcicek.

  • Jose Mourinho has named a fairly starting strong line-up, with most probably considered first-team players. Thibaut Courtois is set to play his first Chelsea match, three years after signing for the club. The Belgian has of course spent several seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, his former Atletico team-mates Filipe Luis and Diego Costa both start, as does other new arrivals Kurt Zouma and Cesc Fabregas.
