Mikael Silvestre and Claudio Pizarro scored for Werder Bremen as the Hanseaten earned an impressive victory over the crowned champions
Mikael Silvestre fired in a low volley to give the hosts a dream start to the game on seven minutes, and Werder managed to defend firmly for the rest of the match. After spending a long spell in primarily deep areas, the Hanseaten had a brief flourish of attacking brilliance that was punctuated in the 63rd minute by Claudio Pizarro's sublime finish.
From the opening kick-off, Bremen matched their opponents' intensity as they looked to force mistakes. Their efforts were rewarded when a pair of half-clearances from a corner saw the ball land at Silvestre's feet, and the Frenchman hammered in a very well-taken goal. Marko Marin nearly doubled Bremen's advantage on 13 minutes after a clever run, but his finish rebounded off the left post.
Dortmund enjoyed more posession in the latter stages of the first half and did well in wide positions, but were unable to pose a significant threat on goal until after the break. As the hour mark approached, Antonio da Silva had a free kick sail just over the bar, and the surprised Lucas Barrios nearly had an accidental shot find the net.
Werder responded well to the visitors' pressure and Marko Marin had one effort cleared off the line by Mats Hummels before Pizarro cut inside from the right and struck a brilliant finish inside his near post. Marin almost made it 3-0 two minutes later, but failed to beat Roman Weidenfeller in a one-on-one situation as his shot rolled wide.
Dortmund tried to pull one back and had a penalty claim denied in the closing seconds, but it would not have changed the points distribution as Bremen held on for a two-goal win.
The result sees Bremen's record improve to 41 points from 33 games as the hosts move to 12th place. Dortmund, having already been crowned champions last week, enter the final matchday with a chance to equal the best defensive record in Bundesliga history.
