90' + 3'
There goes the final whistle! It has been a great match this evening. Valencia win 4-1 at Mestalla.
90' + 2'
A brilliant performance by Canales today too, back in the side and he is showing his team just what they have been missing.
Wow, what a second half it has been for Valencia, they will move back into third place with this win, Emery will be delighted with this performance.
Goalll!!! That surely settles it!!! Its 4-1!!! A fabulous counter-attack by Los Che, Canales puts Hernandez through and he steers the ball into the top corner.
Can Rayo get back into the game?
Was that a foul? Maybe he did climb to head the ball in, but it looks harsh for the home side. Daniel Parejo's corner was deep and searching, and Costa headed in, but it was deemed a foul.
Ricardo Costa has the ball in the net for Valencia... But it is called a foul by the referee, it has been disallowed.
Rayo really looking for a goal back, but again they cannot find the target. Diego Costa's shot is blocked.
Rayo push forward but Raul Tamudo is closed down by the defence of the home side.
Goal!!!! Valencia are two in front once more!!! Jonas slides in the penalty into the bottom right-hand corner of the goal.
Its a penalty for Valencia!!! Feghouli is brought down by Arribas after shaking off Pulido
Valencia are now under the cosh, what a few minutes! They go 2-0 in front, but are pegged back minutes later, Rayo will surely fancy their chances now to get something from this game.
Yellow CardRaúl Tamudo
Goal to Rayo!!! They have a goal back!!! Diego Costa passes the ball into the net after clever play by Michu. He lays the ball off for Costa and Rayo are back in the game.
Goallll!!! Valencia are 2-0 up!!! Fantastic play by Feghouli on the right-hand side of the pitch. He sends in a delightful cross, and Jonas is there to find the net. A smooth and beautiful move.
Diego Costa running through for Rayo! But he is stopped in his tracks by the defence. Can they find a goal?
Yellow CardJordi Alba
Valencia have not won at Mestalla for 4 league games, last time they went 5 games without winning there was in 2007/08. They look on course for a victory tonight though.
Yellow CardDiego Costa
So the score is still 1-0 to Valencia, Rayo have looked good today, but it is questionable whether they can muster an equaliser.
Yellow CardJorge Pulido
Valencia have come off a creditable 0-0 draw with Real Madrid, certainly no mean feat!
Rayo had a fabulous win last weekend, 6-0 against Osasuna, they will be looking to find a victory here.
Manuel Casado is with a darting run into the Valencia box! But his run is halted by the defence. Valencia need to be careful here.
There is a real battle in the middle of the park, both sides midfielders are having a real game here!
Rayo are looking dangerous! A corner is whipped in and Guaita scrambles to punch clear. Valencia made to sweat there.
Is Michu the player to find an equaliser for Vallecano? He has 15 La Liga goals this season.
Rayo need to find a goal, but Valencia so far are looking comfortable. A goal for the visitors would certainly be a shock.
But Tino Costa's delivery is cleared with ease. Do Los Che need a second goal to make the game safe?
Free kick for Valenica. Jordi Alba brought down wide on the left.
Valencia on the brink of moving back above Malaga into third place.
So here we go...
So join me for the second half in 15 minutes! Can Rayo get back into the game?
45' + 3'
There goes the whistle! Valencia lead going into the break. It is not a vintage performance at all from the home side, but manager Unai Emery will be happy with the 1-0 lead.
Before the goal I was going to say that Valencia may be missing Roberto Soldado, but Jonas did very well with that finish, maybe he is not missed after all.
What a manic few minutes! And it is Valencia who lead, and the assistant referee indicates three minutes added time.
Oooh, Rayo are down the other end of the field, and Diego Costa has shot from distance, but it is straight at Guaita.
GOAL!!! Valencia take the lead! Feghouli should have put away his chance, but the Rayo keeper saved well, it was Jonas in the right place at the right time within the penalty box though and he fired the ball into the net!
The question is, can Rayo beat Valencia for the first time at the Mestalla. They have attempted it 12 times, but it could be achieved tonight, so far so good for the visitors.
So Rayo are looking a handful for Valencia here. The score remains 0-0.
So Mikel Labaka cannot continue, and is stretched off the pitch. Roberto Trashorras Gayoso is on in his place for Vallecano.
Corner to Rayo after a brilliant move by the team. But the corner is held really well by keeper Guaita.
Mikel Labaka is down injures and he is being stretched off. There was a clash of heads between him and two other players. Lets hope he is ok.
That really was a great effort from the Valencia player, so close to 1-0.
Pablo Hernandez on the left and his curling shot is tipped wide by the keeper, what a brilliant save.
Yellow CardRicardo Costa
Thats a yellow card for da Costa, he slices down the Rayo player cynically.
This game is really scrappy, both sides are putting big challenges in. Still 0-0 in this clash.
But the ball is held well by Guaita who rises high to catch that.
But now its a free kick the other side of the pitch!
Free-kick in a dangerous area for Valencia, Tino Costa scampering forward, and Pape Diamanka tugs him back.
Rayo are really looking like they are up for a fight here. They are not allowing Valencia any time on the ball. Their game plan is working so far.
Rayo make a rare forage into the Valencia half, but a free-kick comes to nothing. Can they surprise the hosts here?
In comes the resulting corner and Adil Rami has headed wide! What a chance for Valencia!
Chance for Los Che! Pablo Hernandez can't turn the ball in from the cross!
So Valencia look like they are starting to take control of the match. The score is still 0-0 though.
Tino Costa with a shot from range, but it is easy for Joel who gathers in the ball.
Jonas showing some tricks down the right-hand side of the pitch, but the ball goes out for a goal kick.
And the ball is right up the other end as Sofiane Feghouli runs in behind the Rayo defence but they ball is blocked behind for a corner.
Corner to Rayo! They are looking dangerous in these early stages.
Diego Costa and Adil Rami seem to have had a disagreement here and they are both held back by their teammates.
Valencia are playing in white shirts and black shorts, and Rayo Vallecano in black shirts and white shorts.
And straight away Valencia are nearly through on goal, but Rayo goalkeeper Joel is out to clear the ball into touch.
And we are underway!!!!!
Rayo are in a creditable 12th place, and will be looking to have a real go this evening to continue their strong season back in La Liga
Los Che have dropped to fourth place, so will be hoping to move back above Malaga with victory tonight.
The big news is that Roberto Soldado is not in the team for Valenica tonight! He was expected to be back in the side, so big shock for everyone there.
So both teams playing in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
