After a very quiet opening half during which he could've probably stayed at home, he was called into action in the second half and saved well after Berbatov had got in behind.
Loves to break forward and did he best to do just that. Linked up well with Pablo Hernandez and dealt comfortably with the mooted threat of Park. Threw a couple of decent crosses into the box.
Another who faced a potentially daunting night with Nani breaking down the right but stuck to his task and can probably claim victory in the personal battle with the Portuguese. Got forward and provided a decent outlet too.
Used all his experience to make sure Berbatov was given little room to work his magic. Seems he's formed a solid partnership alongside Dutchman Maduro but was fortunate to get away with stamp on Vidic in second period.
Extremely lively and you'd be hard pressed to find a better performer on the night. Used his immense pace and sublime trickery to cause problems for Messrs Evra and Vidic. If anyone was going to make something happen it was him and will be disappointed not to have scored or atleast picked up an assist.
Rarely strayed beyond the half-way line and had a productive evening protecting his back four. Hooked after 86 minutes.
Did his job in providing an extra body to stop United gaining any fluency in their play. That said, the game seemed to bypass him for the most part but did whip in one teasing cross that was well defended by Vidic. Replaced by Manuel Fernandes in the second half.
Again got tight to Berbatov whenever the ex-Tottenham striker got anywhere near the ball. Made sure he kept a close eye on any Anderson's forward bursts too.
He's the one Valencia did manage to keep hold of after the summer departures of David Villa and David Silva but, a few nice touches aside, failed to really have a decisive impact on the game. Looked more of a threat in the second half as he was moved over to right-hand-side.
Looked bright during the first half and tried his utmost to get up and support the isolated Soldado. Provided the cross for which the Spanish striker should have opened the scoring the first half. Hooked after 59 minutes as Valencia threw on a second striker.
Largely ineffective and unproductive night for the one-time Real Madrid striker. Missed the chance of the match as he failed to anticipate Van der Sar's error and headed over the bar with the goal gaping.
E. van der Sar
Had very little to do but almost got caught after he misjudged Dominguez's cross in the first half only to see Soldado head over the top with the goal at his mercy. Saved superbly from a Mathieu volley but whistle had already gone and will be pleased with clean sheet.
Struggled at times to cope with the pace of the likes of Pablo Hernandez in particular but ensured Soldado was given little room to manoeuvre and improved as the game developed. A tad careless in possession when bringing the ball out of defence.
Was forced onto the back foot by the impressive Pablo Hernandez and will be glad that when he was beaten by the 25-year-old, Valencia weren't able to profit.
Like Vidic, found himself turned when faced with a pacey Valencia front line but was relatively untroubled and will be delighted to have kept a clean sheet as he steps up his return to first team action. Made a vital interception with Soldado waiting to tap in.
Typically combative performance from the Scot but things didn't quite go as well as he would've liked. Failed to really stamp his authority on the midfield battle and provided very little as an attacking component.
Very disappointing night for the winger. Rarely found himself involved in the game and when he did have the chance to make tracks going forward, he didn't take advantage.
Was Carrick's first start for United since the Community Shield and it showed. Was often, somewhat surprisingly, careless when in possession of the ball and although he didn't shirk his defensive responsibilities, he failed to track Soldado for what should've been the opening goal in the first half.
Tried to use his pace up against Mathieu but the Frenchman stuck to his task to nullify the in-form winger's attacking threat. Will be annoyed that he didn't take the opportunity to get at the left full-back on more frequent occasions. Came to life late on to help set up Hernandez's winner.
Seemed to relish the opportunity to play in a more advanced position and fashioned chances for his team-mates on a couple of occasions but got more and more frustrated as the game wore on and his influence waned. Brought off for Javier Hernandez after 77 minutes.
Not quite the highs of recent times for the Bulgarian as he was closely marshalled by Navarro and Maduro. Tried to drift out wide to influence the game but lacked decent service and real support up front. Came close as he glided past Navarro and got his shot away but couldn't beat Cesar. Withdrawn after 85 minutes.
- 25 Moyá
- 20 Ricardo Costa
- 2 Bruno
Late arrival, had little impact.
Came on in the second half and tried to make things happen. Had one decent shot well saved by Van der Sar.
- 12 S. Feghouli
Was introduced in the second half to provide support for Saldado up top and looked bright during his half-hour cameo.
- 29 T. Kuszczak
- 12 C. Smalling
Came on in the final minute.
- 28 D. Gibson
Match winner. What more can you say? Brought on by Ferguson for Anderson after 77 minutes and linked up well with another substitute, Macheda, to slot home the winning goal.
- 7 M. Owen
Thrown on by his manager with five minutes remaining to try and grab what would be an important three points for the Red Devils after the draw with Rangers. Laid the ball across for Hernandez to fire home.
