Valencia win Aggregate 5 - 2

Live Commentary

  • AZ offered little resistance for most of that game and poor defending from set pieces failed to help their cause. As for Valencia they have put their poor league form behind them and advance to the semi finals where they will meet Atletico Madrid in an all Spanish semi final. Thanks for joining me, please check out for full match report, player ratings and stats.
  • 90' + 3'
The final whistle is blown and Valencia ease through to the semi finals with a 4-0 win.
  • 90' + 2'
Fine work by Poulsen down the left wing but Gudmundsson fails to make any significant contact with the ball and Alves easily gathers the ball.
  • 90'
Three added minutes, but this game was over about 20 minutes ago. Time just being played out by Valencia here.
  • 88'
The home side now stroking the ball around comfortably and AZ just want the final whistle to go. You have to wonder where this type of form is for Valencia in La Liga?
  • 84'
    SubstitutionTino Costa Hedwiges Maduro
Maduro comes on to replace Costa for Valencia.
  • 83'
Valencia seem to enjoy playing against Dutch sides at the Mestalla. That is their third consecutive game they have scored at least four goals.
  • 80'
    Assist Jordi Alba
  • 80'
    Goal Pablo Hernández
GOAL FOR VALENCIA!! And it's the sub Pablo with a great finish into the corner of the net. Fine build up play from Soldado and then a cross from Alba.
  • 79'
    SubstitutionRoy Beerens Erik Falkenburg
AZ change, as Beerens is replaced by Falkenburg. That is all their subs used now.
  • 76'
    SubstitutionSofiane Feghouli Pablo Hernández
Another change for Valencia and the influential Feghouli comes off and is replaced by Pablo. Securing up the midfield
  • 75'
Barragan gives away a needless free kick close to the Valencia box, but again the set piece is poor and results in a lame effort from 30 yards trickling through to Alves.
  • 74'
    Yellow Card Barragán
  • 72'
AZ try a short corner of their own but the delivery from the wing is poor and easily cleared. Time running out for them now and they need that first goal soon. Valencia seem happy to sit on their lead and aren't offering much in attack.
  • 71'
A great chance for AZ, a fine pass finds Martens who fairly tame left footed effort is palmed away by Alves. The follow up is put out for an AZ corner.
  • 69'
    SubstitutionJozy Altidore Charlison Benschop
A change for both sides, for Valencia Parejo on for Jonas and for AZ, Altidore comes off and is replaced by Benshop.
  • 68'
    SubstitutionJonas Parejo
  • 67'
The dutch outfit have begun to show the urgency needed but at the moment any move is being swiftly broken down by the Valencia midfield. Who most of the game have dominated the game. Changes needed for AZ.
  • 63'
Altidore is looking isolated up front for AZ and sooner or later Gertjan Verbeek needs to make some changes in that area as the away side chase the two goals they need here.
  • 60'
That third goal looks to have really taken it out of the Dutch side. Valencia have another shot at goal after fine build up play, but the shot from Jonas goes well over the bar.
  • 56'
    Assist Roberto Soldado
  • 56'
    Goal Jordi Alba
VALENCIA GOAL!! Feghouli's original cross is parried by Esteban, the rebound falls to Jonas but the shot is cleared. Only for Valencia to attack again, a cross is clipped by Soldado which finds Alba for him to tap the ball home. Uphill task for AZ from here.
  • 54'
Great work by Gudmundsson down the left who passes to Altidore but the striker has a poor first touch and the chance is lost. AZ will need more of the same from Gudmundsson.
  • 52'
Valencia chance as Feghouli crosses the ball in but Soldado's header is blcoked well by Marcellis.
  • 48'
The atmosphere at the Mestalla seems more relaxed tonight. I think they are enjoying their time away from La Liga, should maybe enjoy it while it lasts as they play Real Madrid at the weekend.
  • 46'
    SubstitutionBrett Holman J. Gudmundsson
  • 46'
AZ have made a change at half time with Gudmundsson coming on for Holman. The second half is underway.
  • Again if any of any comments or observations to pass along, don't be shy and tweet me @Paulr04.
  • 45'
And thats half time. Two goals in the space of three minutes give Valencia a 2-0 lead going in to the break. Az will probably be having a little chat in the changing room about how to defend those set pieces a bit better. Game still in the balance though.
  • 42'
Again AZ fail to deal with a Valencia short corner, the original effort from Soldado is save but the rebound is crossed back in from Alba who finds Jonas. He probably should have scored there but his header is just wide of the post.
  • 39'
A throw in from Valencia, Ferghouli goes down in the box looking for a penalty, he goes down way too easily and there is no penalty given. The correct decision.
  • 38'
Altidore is wrongly given offside when it looks like he had a good chance. Unfortunate for the away side.
  • 37'
Again AZ enjoy a good spell of possession but it keeps breaking down in the final third for them. This time Martens losing the ball, he isnt having one of his better far.
  • 33'
AZ look to have found out how to defend the Valencia short corners. But the home side continue to create chances. Much to the anger of the AZ manager who looks like he is being put through the mill during this game.
  • 31'
@saintyman My prediction for Valencia game of 2-0 met at 17 minutes. Not looking good for me as commentary says complete control by home team.
  • 29'
Jonas sees an optimistic effor from 30 yards dip over the crossbar. This game is alot more open than I think both Coaches would prefer.
  • 27'
A half chance for Valencia but Soldado choosing the strange option of trying to back heel it in from 12 yards rather than finding a team mate.
  • 26'
@eagsey83 let's hope feghouli can turn it on, he has so far failed to live up my high expectations for him
  • 24'
From the resulting corner the ball falls to Maher, who strikes a volley from 35 yards but straight at Alves who palms it over. AZ showing signs of getting back in to the game.
  • 23'
AZ enjoyed a good spell of possession and earn themselves a corner.
  • 20'
Great work from Soldado in the AZ box, he is under pressure from two AZ defenders and his strike is just wide. The dutch side need to get a footing in this game and pretty soon!
  • 19'
The only glimmer of hope for AZ is that they only need a single goal to take this game to extra time and penalties. Although at the moment it is hard to see this game finishing 2-1.
  • 17'
    Assist Roberto Soldado
  • 17'
    Goal Adil Rami
AND ANOTHER!! GOAL! Again a well worked short corner whipped in from Costa is flicked on at the near post and knocked in at the back post by Rami.
  • 15'
    Goal Adil Rami
GOOOAALLL! A finely worked short corner ends up being crossed in to the centre of the box where Rami rises to head home the opener.
  • 15'
    Assist Sofiane Feghouli
  • 12'
Soldado with a great chance! A well struck right foot shot that is pushed away by Esteban.
  • 10'
STAT: Valencia are unbeaten in their last 8 hames at home in Europe. Whereas AZ have won just once in their last 17 away European games. Doesn't make for great reading for anyone backing the Dutch side.
  • 8'
Valencia have started to take control of the game and earn another corner which goes to waste when a short worked corner goes wrong.
  • 6'
The free kick is pushed wide by Esteban, but from the resulting corner Costa has a good chance from the centre of the area but side foots his effort wide.
  • 4'
    Yellow Card Tino Costa
  • 4'
AZ have settled well but have given away a free kick on the edge of the area.
  • 1'
