Copa America preview: Uruguay - Peru

Copa America preview: Uruguay - Peru

Oscar Tabarez's Uruguayan side are set to begin their Copa adventure in Argentina with an opener against Peru to kickstart their campaign

PROBABLE LINE-UPS

Uruguay: Muslera; Pereira, Lugano, Victorino, Caceres; Perez, Arevalo, Lodeiro; Cavani, Forlan, Suarez

Uruguay look set to go with an experienced starting XI, lining up in their tried and trusted 4-3-3 formation and utilising much of the team that reached the last four of World Cup 2010. However, most significantly, coach Oscar Tabarez can call on his potentially title-winning trident in attack without any hesitation.

Peru: Fernandez; Rodriguez, Acasiete, Revoredo, Vilchez; Yotun, Guevara, Balbin, Ballon, Advincula; Guerrero

For Peru, a conservative 4-5-1 system will be deployed as they strive to soak up the intense pressure that their opponents are sure to offer. However, coach Sergio Markarian's hopes of Bundesliga stars Claudio Pizarro and Jefferson Farfan participating have been dashed, as both have suffered injury setbacks and have been forced to pull out of the 23-man squad. However, other notable faces in their side include Hamburg's Paolo Guerrero as the lone striker, and Almeria centre-back Santiago Acasiete.

The 31-year-old has had a torrid season with Atletico Madrid by his own high standards, where he even saw himself benched towards the end of the campaign. However, since his return this summer to international matters for Uruguay, he is looking his freshest and sharpest since arguably the 2010 World Cup, where he was his country's standout player. He will want to start his campaign with a bang, and there is every possibility of it happening.

P. Guerrero

With no Farfan or Pizarro available, it will almost exclusively boil down to ex-Bayern youth product Guerrero to provide the impetus in attack. He has been reasonably prolific at club level for Hamburg, and has also impressively bagged double-figures for his native Peru too. The striker can be a real handful for any opposition, with his large frame coupled with an explosiveness.

Editor's Prediction

The star-studded Uruguayan attack should prove to be too much for Peru to handle, who lack genuine predatory threat of their own with the costly absences of Farfan and Pizarro, a real shame for Copa purists who believed a potential shock result was on the cards. It will be mightily difficult for the Peruvians to break the opposition down with such a defensive-minded formation being used from the outset.
