Live Commentary

  • My name's Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing the action to you this evening. Goodbye for now!
  • Time is running out for Sunderland, and this evening's thrashing leaves them bottom of the table with 25 points, seven behind Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion, albeit with two games in hand over the former. They have now lost their last four consecutive league games and relegation to the Championship is moving ever closer as things fail to improve on the pitch.
  • Tottenham fully deserve tonight's win, as the emphatic scoreline suggests. Bar a few spells of impressive attacking play, Sunderland played poorly in all areas of the pitch, allowing the hosts to tear them apart on several occassions. The win moves Tottenham up to sixth place, two points ahead of Manchester United and one step closer to European qualifcation. The race is now on with only five games left to play. Can they do it?
  • FT: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 5-1 SUNDERLAND
  • 90' + 2'
    Assist Younes Kaboul
  • 90' + 2'
    Goal Gylfi Sigurdsson
GOAL! It's gone from bad to worse for Sunderland. Mannone fails to deal with a lofted ball across the penalty area and it darts around the box before ending up with Sigurdsson in front of goal. The Icelander has no difficulty prodding the ball into the back of the net, inflicting further misery on Gus Poyet and his dejected side.
  • 90' + 1'
Adebayor tries to unleash a volley towards the goal to complete his hat-trick, but Brown jumps in at the last minute to deny him the opportunity to do so.
  • 90'
There will be five minutes of added time.
  • 88'
    Substitution Paulinho Milos Malenovic
  • 88'
The only thing that Sunderland can do now is try to avoid going further behind, because Tottenham are in total control at the moment.
  • 86'
    Goal Emmanuel Adebayor
GOAL! Brown's headed clearance is weak and Kane is able to pick the ball up on the edge of the box. He rounds Brown before firing a shot that Mannone only half saves, leaving it rolling towards the goal line where Adebayor helps it over with a simple tap-in. It's 4-1!
  • 84'
    Substitution Aaron Lennon Andros Townsend
  • 84'
Sunderland are looking tired as we enter the final moments of the game, and it's manifesting itself in sloppiness. They try to break away on a counter attack, but it breaks down when Johnson's ball across the pitch misses every availble yellow shirt and rolls out for a throw-in.
  • 82'
    Substitution Nacer Chadli Gylfi Sigurdsson
  • 82'
Chance for Tottenham! Again, the hosts are handed a great opportunity to score, but again it's squandered. This time it's Adebayor at fault, choosing to shoot instead of squaring the ball to Kane, who was unmarked in a great position in front of goal.
  • 80'
Chance for Tottenham! Kane is presented with a chance to grab his second goal, and Tottenham's fourth, but he is put under pressure by Bardsley and scuffs his shot into the hands of Mannone.
  • 78'
    Assist Nacer Chadli
  • 78'
    Goal Christian Eriksen
GOAL! Tottenham have grabbed their third goal, and, surely, all three points as well. Eriksen, who has easily been Tottenham's best player today, is left with too much space on the edge of the penalty area by the Sunderland defence, and he fires a shot that takes a slight deflection off Bardsley and beats Mannone at the far post. It's 3-1!
  • 76'
Rose fouls Johnson on the right of the penalty area, and Lee Mason awards Sunderland a free kick in a dangerous position. It's a great opportunity for Sunderland to trouble Lloris, but Johnson sends it way over every white and yellow shirt and out for a Tottenham throw-in on the other side.
  • 74'
Scocco, who has just come on for Cattermole, unleashes a rocket of a shot towards the near post, but Lloris has it covered and it flies just wide.
  • 72'
    Substitution Lee Cattermole Ignacio Scocco
  • 72'
Substitution Carlos Javier Cuéllar Craig Gardner
  • 72'
Chance for Tottenham! Eriksen sets up Lennon on the right hand side of the penalty area, and he then pulls the ball back for Kane in front of goal, but Brown is there too and he is able to get a foot in first.
  • 70'
Sunderland have so many men behind the ball, much to the frustration of the Tottenham forwards, who just can't get a good shot on goal.
  • 68'
Tottenham try to find a way through the stubborn Sunderland defence but are unable to do so, forcing Paulinho into firing towards goal from 30 yards out. It deflects out for a corner, which Sunderland also deal with admirably. They are well aware that one more Tottenham goal will all but end their chances of getting anything out of the game.
  • 66'
Sunderland push forward themselves and Borini decides to shoot from distance, but it's a poor choice, not to mention poorly executed, and Lloris easily saves the attempt.
  • 65'
Great defending by Sunderland! Tottenham break quickly and Eriksen is left with just Vergini to beat, but the Argentine pulls off a stellar tackle on the edge of the penalty are to dispossess the Dane before he was able to get a shot away.
  • 63'
Thankfully, both players are back on their feet and have moved to the side of the pitch to receive further treatment.
  • 61'
Both Kane and Brown are lying on the floor in a bloody mess after a nasty clashing of heads.
  • 59'
    Assist Christian Eriksen
  • 59'
    Goal Harry Kane
GOAL! Kane marks his first Premier League start with his first Premier League goal. Again, it's Eriksen who's the provider, sending a great low cross into Kane in the centre of the penalty area, who side-foots the ball past Mannone and into the back of the net. It's 2-1!
  • 57'
Chadli is down injured on the ground, but Tottenham press on forward. Lennon darts down the right wing and chips the ball towards Eriksen in the middle of the box, but Bardsley is aware of the Dane's run towards goal and cuts out the danger at the vital moment.
  • 55'
After a nervy few moments, much like in the first half, Tottenham are slowly but surely working their way back into the game. This time, Naughton and Eriksen connect well on the edge of the Sunderland box, but the Danish midfielder's final touch lets him down and gives possession back to the visitors.
  • 53'
Calls for a penalty from the Tottenham fans! Cuellar seems to trip Kane in the heart of the Sunderland penalty area, but Lee Mason is uninterested and signals for a corner kick instead.
  • 52'
Chiriches dives into Johnson and gives away a needless free kick on the left wing. Luckily for the Romanian, it's poor and fails to trouble the Tottenham defence.
  • 51'
Sunderland push forward again, but Bardsley is cut out on the right flank by Rose and the ball is sent out of play by the Tottenham defender. Borini receives the resulting throw-in but he is put under pressure by a plethora of white shirts and the hosts are able to clear the ball back up the pitch and into Sunderland's half.
  • 49'
Chadli makes a mistake and fails to trap a wayward header, allowing the ball to roll into the path of Johnson. He decides to shoot from distance, but it goes just wide of the goal.
  • 47'
Ki finds himself in acres of space in the middle of the field, and he darts forward before laying it off to Johnson on the edge of the penalty area. Unfortunately for Sunderland, he is slightly offside, bringing an end to what could have been a wonderful attacking movement.
  • 45'
    And we're off once again!
  • Tottenham will be the happier side at half time, although they will be painfully aware that they should be at least 2-1 ahead after the amount of chances that they were handed in the latter part of the half. Sunderland were gifted their goal by a terrible defensive error but have struggled since then, both up front and in defence. If Tottenham keep playing the way they have been when they return for the second half, it is surely just a matter of time before they finally go a goal up.
  • HT: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-1 SUNDERLAND
  • 45' + 3'
Tottenham try to string together one last attack on goal before half time, but Paulinho slips in the box at the last moment, allowing Mannone to rush out and collect the ball.
  • 45' + 1'
Tackles are flying in left, right and centre. It's Sunderland's turn to win one this time, which Borini decides to fire towards goal. Paulinho rises high and heads it out for a corner kick, which Kaboul then deals with.
  • 45'
There will be two minutes of added time.
  • 43'
    Yellow Card Lee Cattermole
  • 43'
Eriksen's free kick clears the wall this time, but it goes wide of Mannone's right post.
  • 42'
Again, Tottenham have won a free kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the Sunderland penalty area. This time, Cattermole clatters Kane, sending the youngster up into the air and onto the floor, earning a yellow card from referee Lee Mason.
  • 40'
Eriksen's free kick is poor and is easily blocked by the mass of yellow shirts congregated in front of him.
  • 39'
Bardsley loses the ball and Paulinho picks it up on the edge of the Sunderland penalty area. Bridcutt slides in to try and dispossess him but catches him late, conceding a free kick in a dangerous position.
  • 38'
It's going to be a long seven minutes for Sunderland. Tottenham are pushing hard for a second goal, and they're getting ever nearer with every attempt.
  • 36'
The Tottenham attacks keep on coming, and Sunderland are struggling to deal with them. This time, Eriksen crosses from the right towards Paulinho at the near post, and the Brazilian sends the ball across goal and into the path of Adebayor. He goes to fire it into the back of the net but Bardsley jumps in and cuts out the danger, saving the day for Sunderland. Surely Tottenham will score one more goal before half time?
  • 34'
Rose sends a great ball through the centre of the Sunderland defence towards Kane, but Cuellar is there to slide in and cut out the danger before the young Englishman can make contact himself.
  • 32'
Chance for Tottenham! Rose decides to fire towards goal from 25 yards out, and his attempt flies just wide of the post. Tottenham are looking a much better side since grabbing the equaliser.
  • 30'
Chadli cuts out a wayward Brown pass in the centre of the field, setting Lennon off on a ferociously fast run towards the Sunderland penalty area. He sets up Kane on the right of the box but his cross-cum-shot is easily dealt with by Mannone.
  • 28'
    Assist Christian Eriksen
  • 28'
    Goal Emmanuel Adebayor
GOAL! Tottenham have found their equaliser, and it's Adebayor with the goal. The hosts patiently work their way up the left flank before Eriksen whips a great low cross towards the back post, which the Sunderland defence can't deal with and Adebayor simply chests into the back of the net. It's 1-1!
  • 26'
Chance for Sunderland! It's end-to-end stuff at the moment! Sunderland break away and Cattermole passes the ball back to Borini on the edge of the penalty area. He decides to shoot and forces Lloris into a great diving save, tipping the ball around the post and out for a corner.
  • 25'
Chance for Tottenham! Kane again finds himself in front of goal with the ball at his feet, but he takes too long and his shot is blocked. It bounces back to Lennon, who lays it off to Adebayor, but his shot is also poor, and it clears the crossbar.
  • 23'
Chance for Sunderland! Tottenham's defence gets torn apart by a great through-ball by Cattermole into the path of Johnson, who is one-on-one with Lloris, but, luckily for the hosts, he is flagged for offside.
  • 21'
    Yellow Card Marcos Alonso
  • 21'
Tottenham win a free kick on the right of the Sunderland penalty area. Eriksen pulls it back to Naughton on the edge of the box, catching everybody out, and the Englishman's shot flies just wide of the post.
  • 19'
Chance for Tottenham! Just moments after the restart, Tottenham are handed a wonderful opportunity to equalise. A poor header by Brown ends up at the feet of Chadli, who fires towards goal from 25 yards out. His attempt hits into Kane unmarked in front of goal, and he tries to compose himself before shooting, but it ends up being fired right into Mannone. Anywhere else and it would have been a goal...
  • 17'
    Goal Lee Cattermole
GOAL! Completely against the run of play, Sunderland have gone ahead! After receiving the ball from Lloris, Chiriches plays a terrible ball across the field and right into the path of Cattermole, who fires it into the back of an empty net with ease. Suicidal defending by Tottenham. It's 1-0!
  • 16'
Fantastic play, again, down the left wing by Tottenham. Rose crosses towards Adebayor and the ball meets the towering Togolese striker's head, but the flag is up for offside.
  • 14'
Chance for Sunderland! Johnson sends a wonderful free kick into the heart of the Tottenham penalty area and it meets the head of Brown, but his attempt on goal goes just wide of its attempted target.
  • 13'
Great play by Tottenham allows Chadli to send a deep cross towards the back post. It's slightly too deep, however, and Kane is only able to head it into the path of Brown, who is forced to head it out for a corner, which amounts to nothing.
  • 11'
Borini fouls Chadli, giving away a free kick to Tottenham 30 yards out. Eriksen sends it towards the box but it's deflected upwards and away to Kaboul near the byline. He attempts to control the ball to keep the danger mounted on Sunderland but he's unable to and it rolls out for a goal kick.
  • 9'
Rose embarks on a fantastic run down the left flank, but his cross is poor and it clears the Sunderland penalty area by some distance.
  • 6'
Chance for Tottenham! Eriksen's attempted cross turns into a shot on goal after Alonso tries to block the ball with his boot, sending the ball looping down towards Mannone, who is forced to tip it over the crossbar and onto the roof of the net.
  • 5'
Tottenham win the first corner of the game. Chadli slips a lovely ball into Lennon on the right of the Sunderland penalty area but the resulting cross is deflected out for a corner. The set-piece is sent in but doesn't trouble the defence, and the danger is cleared.
  • 3'
It's been a patient yet organised start by Sunderland. Johnson picks up the ball and sends a long pass across to Alonso on the left wing, but the Spaniard's attempted cross is cut out and it bounces safely into the hands of Lloris.
  • 1'
And we're off! Sunderland get us underway, attacking from left to right.
  • The two teams are making their way onto the pitch, whilst a large number of press photographers unsuprisingly contegrate around Tim Sherwood's seat.
  • Despite being blessed with having two games in hand over both Cardiff City and Fulham after tonight, a win here at White Hart Lane is exactly what Sunderland need after such a miserable run of games, and would send them up to 18th place, four points behind Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion.
  • A win tonight is vitally important for both sides, albeit for completely different reasons. After a poor month in which they lost three of their five Premier League games, Tottenham will be desperate to pick up all three points to send them back above Manchester United and into sixth place, whilst Sunderland are currently languishing at the bottom of the table after a six-game winless streak, with five of those ending in defeat.
  • As for the visitors, Gus Poyet has decided to make just two changes to the side that lost 2-1 to West Ham United last Monday evening. Carlos Cuellar and Adam Johnson come into the starting line up, replacing John O'Shea and Connor Wickham, both of whom drop to the bench.
  • The news dominating the football headlines today has been concerned with the announcement that Tottenham will replace Tim Sherwood as manager at the end of the season. For today's game, the Spurs boss (for now, at least) has made four changes to the side that were thrashed 4-0 by Liverpool a week ago. Replacing the injured Jan Vertonghen in the centre of defence is Vlad Chiriches, who returns to the starting line up for the first time since the end of January after successfully recovering from a back injury. Emmanuel Adebayor is also available after a short time on the sidelines with a heel injury, and he starts up front alongside young Harry Kane, who is making his first Premier League start for the club. Meanwhile, in midfield, Paulinho comes in to replace Gylfi Sigurdsson, who drops to the bench.
  • Sunderland substitutes: Ustari, Larsson, Gardner, Wickhan, Colback, O'Shea, Scocco.
  • Sunderland starting line-up: Mannone; Bardsley, Alonso, Brown, Cuellar; Vergini, Ki, Bridcutt, Cattermole; Johnson; Borini.
  • Tottenham Hotspur substitutes: Friedel, Fryers, Veljkovic, Bentaleb, Sandro, Sigurdsson, Townsend.
  • Tottenham Hotspur starting line-up: Lloris; Naughton, Chiriches, Kaboul, Rose; Chadli, Paulinho, Lennon, Eriksen; Adebayor, Kane.
  • First, let's have have a look at how the two teams will line up, starting with the hosts...
  • Good evening and welcome to the live text commentary of today's Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up-to-date with all of the action from White Hart Lane.
