90' + 3'
Now Sunderland have a late chance with a corner. Reid takes it but Henderson's shot is deflected and Vidic can head clear!
90' + 2'
Late free kick to United. Fletcher sends it into the box, it's head back across goal but Vidic's diving header is blocked.
Yellow Card Rafael
Yellow Card Michael Turner
Into three minutes of stoppage time at the end of the game and Sunderland with the ball...
Good defending by Onuoha who forces Bebe wide and ensures he can't get a cross into the box where Berbatov and Hernandez are waiting.
Reid tries to find Bardsley but again Rafael does well to nip in, play it off the Sunderland man and win the goal kick.
Both teams going for it after all those changes. This time Berbatov sets up Hernandez but he can only blast his shot over the bar.
Great play by the Sunderland substitutes! Reid crosses for Gyan who tries an acrobatic effort but can't beat Van der Sar!
Andy Matthew Reid
Double change for Sunderland: Zenden and Malbranque off, Reid and Gyan on.
Just wide from Berbatov! Great play by Hernandez who tees up the Bulgarian but he drills it just wide with Mignolet beaten!
Manchester United make their final change. On comes Bebe, off goes Anderson.
Great effort by Nani! He smashes a great shot at Mignolet who can only parry it and Bardsley completes the clearance!
Poor by Anderson, he has possession and options ahead of him with Nani making a run but sloppily sends the ball out of play.
Another ball into the United box is aimed at Bent, but again the visitors defend well, this time it's Rafael who clears the danger.
Just wide from Bent! Super run forward by Bardsley who tees up his striker but he can't quite get it on target! Let off for the visitors.
Chance for United to break but Nani just stumbles at the vital moment which allows Bramble to nip in and hoof clear.
Good shot Malbranque! The former Fulham man lets fly with a shot that has Van der Sar worried but it's just too high and lands on top of the net.
First chance for Hernandez. The ball comes into the box and 'Chicharito' gets his head on it, but he's off balance and the ball flies wide.
Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
Change for United, off goes Macheda and on comes Hernandez.
Good block by Vidic! A free kick is powered in by Zenden but hits the United defender and comes to Elmohamady who can't find the target either!
Another corner for United but yet again Nani's delivery goes straight into Mignolet's arms! The visitors have improved since the break but still to really work the Sunderland 'keeper.
Elmohamady finds Bent who tries to turn and lob the goalkeeper all in one movement. He doesn't get it quite right, but it would have been some goal if he had!
Activity on the United bench too, Javier Hernandez is warming up and may be entering the fray soon.
Zenden looks OK to continue, for now, although that doesn't stop Andy Reid who starts warming up on the touchline.
A short break in play after Zenden stays down after a challenge. Eventually the Dutchman gets back to his feet, but he's hobbling and it will be interesting to see if he can continue.
United win a corner, they visitors are looking much brighter since the break, Nani takes it but again Mignolet is there first to claim at his near post.
GOAL! NO IT WON'T COUNT! Berbatov has the ball in the back of the net but the flag is up, he's offside! Almost an instant impact by the substitute.
Here we go again! A change to tell you about - Manchester United have brought on Dimitar Berbatov at the break, Michael Owen is the man to make way.
45' + 2'
HALF-TIME! No goals at the break but Sunderland have been the better team and have hit the post. United have struggled offensively, but the Black Cats may rue not being ahead after a dominant first half performance. Join me after the break for the all the second half action...
Heading into stoppage time at the end of the first half...
Another corner to Sunderland, they've had seven to United's one which just shows the balance of the match. However, again it comes to nothing.
Manchester United win a free kick in a dangerous area after Bramble fouls Anderson. Up steps Nani who curls it past the post!
SUNDERLAND HIT THE POST! Bent tees up Zenden who hits a fierce drive which beats Van der Sar but comes back off the woodwork!
Zenden sends in another cross but again there's too much on it and it drifts harmlessly out of play.
A few signs that Manchester United are starting to improve but the visitors are still to work Mignolet in the Sunderland goal and have looked sloppy in the first half.
Nani tries to find Michael Owen but Elmohamady is there first. Owen not able to make much of an impact so far.
Nani, who has recovered from that early knock, gets in a good position but his cross is poor and straight at Mignolet.
Another chance for Sunderland! Onuoha gets a touch on a cross which has to be cleared just yards from the United goalline!
Another corner to the Black Cats. Zenden swings it in but it's straight at Van der Sar who claims at the second attempt.
Midway through the first half and the home side very much on top but still no score. Steve Bruce will be by far the happier manager, mind you.
Nani gets to his feet rather gingerly but he looks as though he will be OK to continue although he'll have to go off. Play continues without him and United temporarily down to 10.
Nani goes down, no foul is given, which allows Henderson to roar forwards. United are furious but play continues until Vidic makes the challenge and puts the ball out of play and Nani can receive some treatment...
Yellow Card Nemanja Vidic
Vidic is booked for a cynical foul on Bent while trying to shepherd the ball out of play. The free kick comes to nothing but Sunderland are piling on the pressure...
Great save Edwin van der Sar! What a chance for the home side. Cattermole makes a great run before sending Malbranque clean through. He only has the Dutchman to beat but he stays big, makes the save and somehow United survive!
The visitors win a corner, which Nani takes but it's straight at Mignolet. United struggling to get going at the Stadium of Light.
Bardsley sends in a decent cross which United fail to clear properly and the ball comes out to Henderson who flashes another shot at goal but again Sunderland can't find the target.
Elmohamady beats O'Shea but Vidic comes across to clean up. Still, Sunderland looking the brighter of the two sides in these early stages.
Good play by the home side. Bent and Malbranque swap passes and then the England striker shapes to shoot but skews his effort wide of Van der Sar's post.
Good early pressure from Sunderland who win a succession of corners, three in a row. Yet Vidic and Ferdinand do well, between them, to clear the danger each time.
John O'Shea appears to shove Darren Bent over. The Stadium of Light howl for a free kick but the decision goes against the forward and United have a throw! The home crowd are not impressed!
Paul Scholes wastes no time in getting in on the action bringing down Steed Malbranque in the centre circle with a trademark challenge. The free kick is drifted goalwards but there's too much on it and it's out for a goal kick to United.
And finally we're off! The visitors, in their away kit of black shirts and white shorts, kick off. Sunderland are in their traditional red and white stripes of course.
Just hearing news that there will be a delay in kick off due to a burst water pipe in the Manchester United dressing room which has caused the ceiling to collapse. Kick off will now be at 15.20 BST.
So the big news concerns the visitors who begin with Federico Macheda and Michael Owen up front, Dimitar Berbatov is on the bench. Rafael continues at right back, Rio Ferdinand is fit to play and Scholes returns in midfield. The visitors give Phil Bardsley a start against his former team but all eyes will be on the in-form Darren Bent up front.
Man Utd: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, O'Shea, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Anderson, Macheda, Owen. Subs: Kuszczak, Evra, Berbatov, Smalling, Hernandez, Gibson, Bebe.
Sunderland: Mignolet, Onuoha, Turner, Bramble, Bardsley, Malbranque, Cattermole, Henderson, Zenden, Bent, Elmohamady. Subs: Gordon, Mensah, Da Silva, Riveros, Reid, Ferdinand, Gyan.
