Quick off his line and made a couple of telling contributions when called upon. Fabulous instinctive save from Adebayor in the second half.
Typically brave performance from the centre-half, covered well for Bramble and looks to have struck up a good understanding with his defensive partner. Picked up a knock and didn't emerge for the second half.
Stepped in for Nedum Onuoha and produced an impressive defensive display. Largely shackled both Milner and Johnson before moving into central defence for the second half where he continued to defend admirably.
Wasteful with long balls forward early on and was caught out of position on occasion. But grew into the game as it progressed and made some good blocks.
Excellent work in stifling opposition attacks and provided good service on set pieces. Was willing to push forward to good effect.
Composed in possession, provided a creative outlet and broke up opposition attacks. Was Sunderland's main attacking threat with some lovely touches. Tired in the second half and was guilty of the occasional misplaced pass.
Overshadowed by Henderson and offered little going forward, wasn't prominent in defensive duties. Struggled to cope with Yaya Toure and sometimes gave possession away cheaply.
Ahmed El Mohamady
Started brightly but faded towards the end of the first half, his crossing was inconsistent. Showed flashes of quality and most of Sunderland's attacks came down his flank.
Was solid in defence for the most part but did gift possession to Tevez once in the first half that nearly proved costly. Was the only blemish in an impressive all-round performance.
Mature display, starved of possession but put in a shift down the channels. Was a willing runner and put away a late penalty for the Black Cats.
Prepared to get back and cover but was sporadic in his attacking contributions. Picked up a nasty looking knee injury at the end of the first half.
Responded capably when called upon, but couldn't stop Darren Bent's injury time penalty.
Like his defensive colleague, Toure handled everything the Black Cats threw at him with ease.
Contained Campbell in the first half but at times his clearances were poor. Not as convincing in his forward play. Foolishly gave away a costly late penalty.
Gave his opposite number time and space in the early stages but adjusted well as the game went on. Continued to offer al-Muhammadi the opportunity to get the ball into the box, however, and was taken off with 75 minutes played.
Did a good job of disrupting the supply lines to Darren Bent, a dominant display.
Malbranque got the best of the Englishman in the first half, as Barry struggled to handle the Frenchman's creativity. But he did ensure his side enjoyed long spells of possession. Shifted to left-back after Lescott's withdrawal and made some good challenges.
Powerful break from the back provided a gilt-edged opening for Tevez. Revelled in his attacking responsibilities and combined with Tevez on multiple occasions. Also got back to disrupt Sunderland forages forward.
N. de Jong
Shielded his back four brilliantly and restricted the Black Cats through the centre, forcing Sunderland to attack primarily down the flanks.
Some cute touches but struggled to penetrate on either flank. Elected to go short on corners due to the wind but it didn't pay off.
Became more prominent when he moved out to the right flank but struggled to make a telling contribution. Switched sides with Adam Johnson throughout.
Provided good movement and brought in other players well, but missed an absolute sitter early in the first half. Didn't let this miss affect him and continued to interlink with City's midfielders
- 1 S. Given
- 5 P. Zabaleta
- 8 S. Wright-Phillips
Brought on with ten minutes to go and didn't have an impact, will need more time to adjust to the English game.
- 24 P. Vieira
Injury-time addition and no had time to make a contribution.
Made an immediate impact with a delicious back-heeled attempt from a corner, but was denied by an excellent save by Mignolet.
