Mali won 3 - 1 on penalties
S. Kéita 58'
I've been Simon Harrison, and I hope to catch you all later! I think I need a bit of fresh air after such a tense game! See you all next time.
That's it then! Mali, who are goal-shy, are in the semi-final! Thank you for tuning into Goal.com's LIVE coverage of Mali's penalty shootout win over hosts South Africa!
That's it! Mali go through and South Africa go out! Composed penalties from Mali pay dividends, as they netted all three of their spot-kicks!
That's it SOUTH AFRICA MISS AGAIN! MALI ARE THROUGH, WINNING 3-1 ON PENALTIES!
GOAL! Traore steps up, and converts! He smashes that it! South Africa are on the ropes!
GOAL! Mahlangu steps up, and misses! Diakite saves from a similar position to how he did from Furman!
GOAL! Tamboura steps up, and converts! Really coolly done! Mali are ahead!
GOAL! Furman steps up, and misses! Diakite saves!
GOAL! Diabate steps up, and converts! That makes it 1-1 now!
GOAL! Tshabala steps up, and converts! That makes it 1-0!

Igesund looks to be drawing up his penalty takers! Surely this will end as a draw. Penalties isn't my favourite way of settling a game, put neither side deserve to lose this in open play!
120' + 1'
Pen SO GoalLawrence Siphiwe Tshabalala
This will be the last chance for South Africa now, surely. Tshabalala wins a corner for his side, and I think they're going to pile everyone forward!
The clock is being run down, but Keita still urges his Mali teammates on! Letsholoyane is totally spent, and is being stretchered off. He's really given absolutely everything for his cause, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't come back on!
South Africa have now got their backs to the wall and are counting on some good defending from Sangweni and Khumalo! This looks like it will go to penalties..
Maiga plays a lofted ball to Diabate, who brings the ball down well and outmuscles Sangweni! The defender recovers however, and robs the huge striker of the ball well.
Tshabalala whips a cross in towards the front post, but Wague is there to clear! This is end-to-end stuff now, neither side has enough energy to really impose themselves for long periods.
Tshabalala shoots from a free-kick that must have been 30 yards out from goal.. there's ambitious, but that was madness!
Yellow CardMahamane El Hadji Traoré
Khumalo manages to clear, after Traore trickled a shot towards goal, following even more good working from left-back by Tamboura!
Traore receives a yellow card after going in with a high foot, and catching Serero with his studs! That was a horrible challenge.
Yellow CardPeter Tsepo Masilela
Masilela is being forced to leave the field to change his shirt, and he doesn't want to! He's booked for his complaints!
Tamboura bombs on down the left, looking to put the ball on the head of Diabite, but Khumalo heads the ball clear! South Africa physically look in a bit better shape!
Sorry for not announcing the half time whistle in extra time, but I didn't have chance! The second half is back underway, and may I say that both teams look very weary!
105' + 2'
Bernard Melvin Parker
Lawrence Siphiwe Tshabalala
105' + 1'
Tshabalala could add that pace and flair which could drag South Africa into the lead, but he doesn't have long before half time in this extra time period!
Play is stopped as Parker goes down with cramp! This game is very sluggish, everyone really is tired!
Both sides are really beginning to flag now, I do wonder how many times I'll be seeing players going down with cramp! Mali really have looked quite solid in this second half. South Africa keep being forced backward, much to the frustration of the crowd.
This game is very, very finely balanced. Both sides are lacking an instinctive goalscorer at the moment, the build up play is alright, but there is no end product.
Serero carries the ball confidently through the midfield, exchanging one or two passes, before spreading the play out to Parker on the left. He swings a ball in, but it is deflected out for a corner. The set piece comes to nothing, yet again!
Ooo, that's a nasty clash of heads between two of their own players! Diabite and Traore collide and that did look quite nasty! Both players are on their feet, thankfully.
South Africa are piling men forward, while Mali sit deep. I think both sides might be happy with a penalty shootout here, the half an hour of extra time might just be a formality!
Diakite makes another save, this time from Mahlangu! The youngster burst forward, but fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper!
Oooh! Khune just made a meal of claiming a Mali free-kick! He races out to claim but ended up punching the ball away amongst a ruck of bodies!
Majoro picks up a yellow card for simulation, after throwing himself on the floor in the Mali area. That was deserved really, there wasn't much in the challange.
Yellow CardM. Majoro
Right, extra time begins! There are some very tired legs out there now, and neither side look willing to concede first! This could be a cagey half an hour!
90' + 4'
This game looks destined to go to extra time now!
90' + 3'
Diabite manages to evade Khumalo and spread the ball wide to Tamboura. However, Gaxa stands tall and forces the left-back into fouling him. South Africa can then push out.
90' + 1'
Serero attempts to break down the left, but he is fouled by Diarra. The long ball is now in employment, but the Mali centre halves are able to deal with the aerial balls with ease.
South Africa are giving away some poor free-kicks in dangerous areas! Mali might just be able to capitalise!
Cheick Tidiane Diabaté
Mali make another change, and Parker gives away a needless free kick. Khune punches the ball away from Diabate!
Khune's distribution has been great all game. Whilst everyone else is oozing unease, he is ever-confident! Whether it's a acrobatic pounce, and audacious pass, he's willing to give it a try!
Neither side is wanting to commit too many men forward here! There is definitely the feeling that they are more worried about being caught on the break then scoring before the 90 minutes are up!
A great leap from Khune prevents Samassa from getting hold of a lofted through ball. The man is like a panther!
Parker puts in a cross for South Africa, with many yellow shirts in the area, but his delivery is behind his onrushing compatriots! Unfortunate!
Furman gives the ball away ridiculously cheaply. He could be getting substituted soon at this rate! Mahlangu forces Diakite into a save to his right, but it's easy for the Mali keeper.
Both sides look a little unnerved, it seems as though they're both more preoccupied about conceded than scoring. South Africa have managed to get a bit more control of the game again though.
Gaxa is down injured after a seemingly two footed challenge, however the referee deemed it fair. It had to be at least a free-kick, Traore jumped in with two feet off the ground and studs showing! Dangerous stuff!
Mahlangu fails to pick out a crossfield pass, much to the frustration of the crowd. I think that South Africa would have more of a chance against Diawara on the right, rather than against Tamboura!
Tamboura is ridiculously fast, I would not fancy playing against him at all! He can cover ten yards with ease, and has been invaluable in covering in behind for Mali today.
After a great bursting run by Mahlanga, the midfielder releases Parker, who is dispossessed by Keita. Letsholoyane tries to nick the ball from the former Barca man and fouls him in the process - a tussle ensues.
Furman looks for Phala at the back post, with three yellow shirts waiting unmarked at the back post. The midfielder has certainly gone off the boil in the second half, and shows it as the ball evades Phala and goes out for a goal-kick.
Yellow CardSamba Sow
Letsholoyane moves the ball infield to Mahlungu, and he looks to play a ball in behind the Tamboura, however he puts too much on the pass and it runs out of play. Poor!
Diarra almost beats Gaxa will some step-overs, but the South Africa full-back stands up well to poke the ball away. Poor decision from Diarra, he could've delivered a cross then!
South Africa pick up a free-kick from 30 yards out, it's whipped in by Phala but the ball is deflected out for a corner. The set piece is taken by the same man, but Diawara manages to head the ball away!
Uncertainty is certainly setting in, in both the home fans and the home team! Mali could nick the win, the South Africa foundations seem to have disappeared from beneath them!
Ooooooh! Samassa was just presented with a golden chance, but can't convert the opportunity! He capitalises on bad pass, controls the ball and drives towards goal from a narrow angle. Khune makes himself big and makes the important save! Mali in the ascension!
I honestly can't call this game now! South African looked totally in control in the first half, but now the game has essentially been turned on it's head!
Mali are back in the game from nothing! They've improved from the first half, but that's the first big save that Khune has had to attempt to make! South Africa definitely need to tighten up at the back after conceding that goal, both centre halves lost Keita.
GOAL! THE EQUALISER! Keita turns the ball home with his head, after great work down the left by Samassa! Khune just couldn't quite get his body behind it!
Oooh! Well claimed by Diakite in the Mali goal! Majoro is slipped through on goal, miscontrols the ball slightly, and this mistake allows for the goalkeeper to rush out and snatch the ball off his foot!
Mohamed Lamine Sissoko
Mahamane El Hadji Traoré
Mali are definitely getting back into this game. The change of Sissoko for Traore shows intent from Mali, who look as though they've created a base to build on in the second half.
Oooh! A long ball from Phala almost finds Majaro off the shoulder of Wague, but the Mali defender heads it away! That was a good interception!
South African push on down the right with Majoro, and his attempted pass is deflected out for a corner. The ball given short, before being closed down - and the ball runs out for another corner.
Samassa holds the ball up well for Mali, using his powerful build to hold off challenges. Diaware pushes on and delivers a cross, but it finds a South African head!
Masilela delivers from the left, but can't find a teammate. Parker takes a blow to the face after clashing accidentally with Keita! He's quickly back on his feet.
Furman robs the ball from a Malian, allowing Letsholoyane to skip through three Mali players, but he can't find an accurate ball afterwards to find a teammate!
And we are back underway! Can Mali get back into this game?
Right, that's it! The full time whistle! Now it's extra time! Mali have fought their way back into this game and deserved a second chance at getting that all-important second goal. South Africa will need their home fans to remain in good voice in the next half an hour!
Despite losing Samba Diakite to injury, Mali most definitely are not out of this match! Although Samassa looks isolated up front on his own, there have been some promising moments - mainly coming from the left-back Tamboura.
The half time whistle blows! Phala receives a yellow card just before the break, and Bafana Bafana lead! If they can keep a clean sheet in the second half, they're through!
45' + 3'
Yellow CardThuso Phala
45' + 2'
Furman to the rescue again! Samassa looks to bring the ball under control in the South African penalty area, but the little midfielder nicks the ball off his foot! Great interception!
45' + 1'
Good block by Furman! The Oldham man manages to put his head on in the way to block a Malian effort on goal!
Bad decision from Mahlangu! Instead of crossing the ball to the back post for his onrushing teammates, he instead tries to set up Letsholoyane for a strike, but his pass is too weak and plays his teammate into trouble!
Oh dear Sow! Samassa squares the ball to the edge of the box for his teammate, but Sow blasts it absolutely miles over the crossbar! What an awful effort!
Tamboura is really causing problems for South Africa. The powerful full back is really bombing on, making interceptions in his own half and reasonable crosses in the oppositions'.
Tokelo Anthony Rantie
Ooh! Ambitious volley attempted by Samassa! The real moment of brilliance was Khumalo's clearance beforehand however, as the PAOK centre half made a great aerial interception to head a Tamboura cross clear of danger!
Rantie limps off the field, after seeming to pull a muscle. As he slowly walks off due to his injury, the ref books him for timewasting! Unbelievable!
Yellow CardTokelo Anthony Rantie
South Africa are in control, Mali are just too predictable. Samba Diakite provided a threat down the right before his substitution, but now they have nobody really capable of driving from midfield.
Tamboura lofts a freekick forward from range, which is initially cleared, Mali pick up possession again but make another unenforced error. I think their fans may just be becoming a little frustrated.
Oooh! Dangerous corner from South Africa! The ball is swung in, and Sangweni is inches away from heading the ball home! So close, but yet so far.
South Africa break yet again, and Phala attempts to put Rantie in behind the Mali defence once more. Mali are really having to stay alert in defense, Bafana Bafana are countering with real pace.
That is a deserved goal for Igesund's side, Mali have created almost nothing. Back to the drawing board for Mali, who might need to alter their formation to give Samassa a bit more help.
GoalTokelo Anthony Rantie
GOAL! Rantie scores! He is in the right place at the right time at the back post to tap home a Parker squared ball!
Samassa nutmegs Masilela and picking up a freekick from a dangerous area as a result. Great play from the isolated man.
Ooooooh! Tamboura! Nearly! The left-back saw Khune of his line and attempted an audacious chip from 30 yards out! It had the Bafana Bafana keeper very worried!
Gaxa and Rantie are having no luck against Tamboura, he's quick enough to keep up with them! Gaxa has delivered a couple of decent balls into the box when he's given space, however.
Oooh! Rantie goes close again! Rantie sees a shot blocked, it rebounds out to Parker, but Couliably blocks his efforts too! Backs to the wall for Mali at the moment!
It's Samba Diakite that goes off, perhaps he was still feeling the effects from the clash of heads with Masilela.
Yellow CardBongani Khumalo
Mali are already warming up a substitute, so I have to presume that one of their players may have some sort of muscle complaint.
Oooh! Diakite denies Rantie well in the Mali net! The young forward looks to tuck the ball inside Diakite's front post after being slipped in down the channel, but the Mali keeper spreads himself and makes a good save!
Samassa works well down the left flank, dropping deeper after picking up the ball with his back to goal. However, as he's the one crossing the ball, there's nobody waiting to tap the ball in! Mali aren't willing to gamble pushing men forward this early on.
I would risk saying that South Africa have had the better of these opening exchanges. Although Keita went close from range for Mali, Bafana Bafana have generally kept possession far better than their opponents.
Diakite claims a free kick well, pouncing on the ball. Sow then claimed for a penalty at the other end, after Gaxa shoved him in the back.
Rantie almost manages to burst through the Malian defence, but Tamboura manages to make a last ditch challenge to stop him in his tracks! Great defending!
South Africa look a little more focused and composed in possession, whereas Mali have just pumped the ball forward to their target men. Samba Diakite looks dangerous though!
Mahlangua drives well down the left, cuts the ball back to Letsholoyane, who sets Parker for a strike, however Coulibaly blocks! The ball is cleared out wide, then swung back in, but nobody can get on the end of it!
Samba Diakite and Masilela go down after a nasty clash of heads. Both players look in a bit of discomfort, but they should be okay to continue!
From the opening ten minutes, it's hard to call this game! Both sides have had an equal share of possession, and both sides have had half chances!
Sissoko gets away from Furman well, before laying the ball into Samassa. The lanky forward causes some disruption, but Khune hoofs clear in the end.
Sangweni and Samassa show animosity towards each other, after the South African bundled his opponent to the floor. Moments later, Keita blasts narrowly over the bar!
Rantie goes down easily in the Mali box! The lively forward managed to control the ball ahead of Wague, and looked to receive a tug on his arm. He went down, but it would have been a harsh penalty.
Rantie tries a long range effort, but Wague gets a block in! The chance all stemmed from Samba Diakite giving the ball away. Great drive forward from the Mali midfielder though.
Even start so far, as neither side have managed to carve out a clear chance or any meaningful possession. This pitch allows for better football to be played, it isn't heavily depended on sand.
Ooh! Rantie almost capitalised on a earlier Mali mistake! Tamboura and Wague got their wires crossed, and the young South African almost managed to square for Parker. Unlucky!
This promises to be a hard fought affair! Both sides are opting to fill the midfield with bodies, which could leave the likes of Rantie and Maiga quite isolated.
And we are underway in the second Africa Cup of Nations quarter final match!
And to avoid any confusion, the Samassa in Mali's starting line-up is number 15, forward Samassa, not their goalkeeper. They've both got the exact same names, unfortunately!
Just a reminder, earlier Ghana beat Cape Verde 2-0 to become the first side to progress into the semi-finals.
Mali starting line-up: Diakite, Coulibaly, Tamboura, Diawara, Wague, Keita, Sissoko, Sow, Samba Diakite, Samassa, Maiga.
South Africa starting line-up: Khune, Masilela, Sangweni, Khumalo, Gaxa, Furman, Phala, Letsholoyane, Mahlangu, Parker, Rantie.
I'm Simon Harrison and I will be keeping you fully informed with all of this evening's action, as both teams attempt to reach the semi-finals!
