Live Commentary

  • That concludes Goal's live play by play coverage of this evening's international friendly between Scotland and the USA. I'm Ian Capasso, saying thanks for joining us, and goodnight from Glasgow!
  • A score of subsititutions midway through the final 45 minutes saw the match become bogged down in midfield, but in time the Americans grew in confidence with new faces on the pitch and threatened three times in quick succession down the stretch, but couldn't find the clinical finishing touch to see the encounter reach full time without a goal to speak of.
  • The pace picked up to start the second half as Jozy Altidore had an early chance for the visitors and Tim Howard needed a flying save to keep out Robert Snodgrass' curling free-kick.
  • The first half of tonight's encounter proved to be largely uninspiring with both sides lacking creativity and energy in attack. Craig Conway had a chance to break the deadlock through the drudgery after going in alone on goal, but fluffed his chance harmlessly wide.
  • Full time at Hampden Park as the match plays out to a scoreless draw.
  • 92'
Brown floats a cross into the area in what will likely be Scotland's last attacking overture, with Howard claiming easily.
  • 90'
    Substitution Jozy Altidore Terrence Boyd
  • 90'
Two minutes of injury time in Glasgow for a winner to be found.
  • 88'
Klinsmann's men have really picked up the pace down the stretch here and have put Scotland under quite a bit of pressure, but will be kicking themselves for not taking advantage of a series of prime chances.
  • 85'
Yet another chance from the Americans now! Shea leaves Greer for dead down the left flank and pulls back for Johansson to whistle a strike just wide of the far post!
  • 84'
    Substitution Craig Conway Gary Mackay-Steven
  • 83'
Commotion in the Scotland penalty area sees the ball fall to Johansson, who forces a great save out of Marshall low to his left. Altidore looked destined to hit the back of the net on the rebound, but Hanley got there first and fortuitously cleared the ball off of the Sunderland striker and out for a goal kick!
  • 82'
Johansson robs a Scotland defender in the offensive third and pishes forward to put in a low ball for Altidore, who just fails to get on the end of it.
  • 81'
    Substitution Alejandro Bedoya Chris Wondolowski
  • 81'
Aston Villa man Steven Naismith comes on for Bannan as Strachan throws on another striker down the stretch.
  • 80'
    Substitution Barry Bannan Steven Naismith
  • 79'
The match certainly doesn't look destined for a winner as the two sides trade possession in midfield, with Scotland opting for aimless long balls into the box as their primary mode of creation.
  • 76'
The Americans break forward and Shea crosses into Hutton's hand to bring about penalty shouts from the visitors, but the referee is uninterested and waves play on.
  • 75'
Not a whole lot of action with a bevy of new introductionshaving entered the fray over the past quarter hour. Scotland still edging possession but struggling to carve out a distinct opportunity.
  • 72'
    Substitution Brad Evans Eric Lichaj
  • 72'
Mulgrew down receiving treatment after going down under a rough challenge.

  • 69'

Protests from Scotland as Howard comes out to claim a wayward longball and appears to have possibly handled outside his area, but replays show that the Everton 'keeper committed no such infraction.
  • 65'
Scotland still seeing the majority of the ball despite the American substitutions, which also included Aron Johansson coming on for Sacha Kljestan.
  • 62'
    Substitution Eddie Johnson Brek Shea
The first changes of the match come from Jurgen Klinsmann. Mix Diskerud comes on for Jermaine Jones, whilst Stoke's Brek Shea makes his way on for Eddie Johnson.

    Substitution Jermaine Jones M. Diskerud
  • 62'
    Substitution Sacha Kljestan Aron Jóhannsson

So nearly for the Americans! Cameron wanders forward and takes advantage of some loose play from Scotland at the back to lay-off for Altidore, who blazes just wide of the post from just inside the area!
  • 56'
After a strong start to the second half from the USA, Scotland have come on strong and are seeing the majority of the ball as they search for the elusive opener.
  • 54'
Appeals for handball from Scotland as Conway breaks down the left and crosses into Gonzalez's arm, but the referee ways play on as the ball trickles out for a corner.

  • 48'
The Americans claim the first chance of the second half as Altidore finds space to shoot on the left side of the penalty area, but the Sunderland striker floats his effort directly into Marshall's hands.
  • 46'
Scotland get us started for the final 45 minutes in Glasgow.
  • The sides are back out on the pitch and the second half is just moments away.
  • Strachan and Klinsmann will undoubtedly be urging their men to be more enterprising and take the game to the opposition, as both sides have looked flat and content to sit back.
  • The first half has been witness to few chances and little action of note as the two sides have looked hesitant to take control of the encounter in midfield. Craig Conway claimed the only clear cut opportunity of the evening after being played in on goal by Steven Fletcher, but the 28-year-old fluffed his effort wide of the near post with Tim Howard left stranded by his defence.
  • Let's take a look at the action thus far with the sides heading to the dressing rooms.
  • 45'
Not a moment of time added on as the referee whistles for half time with the match locked in a scoreless draw.
  • 43'
The visitors nearly navigate their way through the Scotland ramparts as Bedoya breaks down the right flank to pick out Altidore, whose lay-off for Eddie Johnson is whisked away to end the danger to Scotland's goal.
  • 42'
Bannan's effort from distance is blocked away and Scotland gather once again from Gonzalez's clearance. Hutton bursts forward and looks to have go himself at range, but the defender always had little chance of testing the 'keeper from 40 yards and sends his shot into row Z.
  • 39'
Neither side really taking the initiative still as the match edges ever closer to half time. When not in possession both seem content to put 10 men behind the ball, forcing the attacking team to play the ball around at the back in hopes of working an opening.
  • 36'
A fantastic chance for Scotland isn't taken! Fletcher finds Conway with a defence splitting ball to send him in one-on-one with Howard, but the Brighton & Hove man makes a mess of his finish and fails to even hit the target!
  • 35'
Jones is robbed in his own end and Mulgrew bursts forward to pick out Snodgrass in the centre of the park. The Norwich man turns and finds space to shoot, but sends his effort high over the bar.
  • 33'
A delightful flick-on from Evans nearly finds Altidore waiting to knock home the opener at close range, but debutant Gordon Greer is well-placed to clear for Scotland.
  • 31'
A poor ball from Bradley forces Bedoya into giving away possession to Snodgrass, who breaks down the left to win a corner. Scotland are unable to capitalise on the set piece opportunity, and Jones comes away with the ball on the counter for the Americans.
  • 29'
Jurgen Klinsmann gets up off the USA bench and gestures towards his players to settle once they've gained possession, as the two sides have descended into exchanging touches on the ball.
  • 27'
Scotland growing in confidence once more as the momentum appears to be shifting moment to moment. Strachan's men string together a series of 10 passes and nearly play their way in on goal, only for Bradley to make a crucial interception for the USA to send play headed back the other way.
  • 24'
Mulgrew sends in a well-struck curling free-kick, but just can't get the ball to come down early enough and Howard watches it sail just over the crossbar in relief.
  • 23'
Fletcher forces Gonzalez into a difficult spot and wins a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the box.
  • 21'
After Scotland bossed the opening 10 minutes of the encounter, the Americans have grown into the game and appear the primary aggressor in winning the midfield battle.
  • 18'
Another Bradley free-kick finds Altidore in the area, who pulls back for Beasley to fire in a cross that is cleared away for a corner. Brad Evans has the chance to test Marshall on the volley on the ensuing set piece, but hits a fresh air shot and Scotland clear their lines.
  • 16'
A bit of sustained possession for the USA now as they've begun to find space to operate in midfield, sending the ball out wide to stretch Scotland and working back into central positions to try to find an opening through which to supply Altidore.
  • 13'
Chance spurned! A neat pair of headers knocks down Bradley's free-kick for Altidore to have a go on the volley from the edge of the area, only to send his strike soaring over the bar!
  • 11'
Bannan beats his man to send a cross onto the head of Fletcher with the outside of his boot, but the Sunderland striker can't get any power behind his cranial strike and Howard catches easily.
  • 9'
The USA look to hit back with a chance of their own as Jermaine Jones plays Demarcus Beasley in down the left flank with a sumptuous lofted ball. However, the veteran full-back tries to hit his cross first time and sends it spiraling over Marshall's goal to bring the move to an end.
  • 7'
More pressure from Scotland now as they've begun to assert themselves in the early going now. Bannan plays a dangerous ball into the box that is cleared only as far as Craig Conway, but the Brighton & Hove Albion man can only balloon over the bar from 15 yards.
  • 5'
Scotland with a bit of enterprise now as Whittaker skips down the left to look up for a team-mate in the area, but Fabian Johnson is there to make a crucial intervention and quell the danger.
  • 4'
Four minutes in a we're still yet to see a clear cut chance from either side as they've yet to come within sight of each other's goal.
  • 2'
The sides trade possession in the opening minutes of the encounter as they look to feel each other out. Scotland lose out looking to play through the middle and the Americans look to strike back quickly with a ball over the top from Michael Bradley, but David Marshall easily gathers.
  • 1'
USA take the kick-off and we're underway in Glasgow!
  • The teams are in position on the pitch and kick-off is just moments away at Hampden Park.
  • Scotland scored back-to-back victories over Macedonia and Croatia to close out their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign on a high, and will be looking to make it three straight wins for the first time since 2007 this evening.
  • The last time the two countries met, the day ended bitterly for Scotland, as the Americans handed out a comprehensive 5-1 thrashing in Jacksonville in May 2012.
  • Everton stalwart Tim Howard takes up his usual mantle for the USA between the pipes, with Stoke man Geoff Cameron forming half of the central defensive pairing in front of him. Ex-Aston Villa midfielder Michael Bradley starts in the holding midfield duo alongside Schalke's Jermaine Jones, with Sunderland hitman Jozy Altidore leading the line up top.
  • USA: Howard; Evans, Gonzalez, Cameron, Beasley; Bradley, Jones; Bedoya, Kljestan, Johnson; Altidore
  • Norwich main man Robert Snodgrass gets the start for boss Gordon Strachan whilst Celtic duo Charlie Mulgrew and Scott Brown slot in at the heart of the midfield alongside Crystal Palace's Barry Bannan. Cardiff shot stopper and Glasgow native David Marshall takes the gloves for tonight's encounter.
  • Scotland: Marshall; Hutton, Whittaker, Hanley, Greer, Bannan, Mulgrew, Brown, Fletcher, Snodgrass, Conway
