Champions League semi-finalists in waiting Schalke claimed another victory over 2009 champions turned relegation candidates Wolfsburg at the Veltins Arena.
Schalke and Wolfsburg met with one team needing three points much more than the other, but it was the home side, fresh from their brilliant victory midweek, who go home with the points, inflicting more misery on Wolfsburg after Jose Manuel Jurado struck a 76th minute winner.
Inter's conquerors Schalke had the first sight on goal but Jefferson Farfan’s early effort was ruled out for offside. The Gelsenkirchen club were keen to add another victory after their fine showing midweek, Raul headed over and Edu whipped in a free kick no one connected with, while Lukas Schmitz blasted a shot narrowly over.
Around the quarter-hour mark the visitors started to come into the match more. Diego’s set pieces seemed to cause a bit of confusion in the Schalke box. Simon Kjaer headed effort narrowly missed a flick on from the near post, and Grafite was flagged marginally offside when it looked as though he could threaten. Grafite almost connected with a cross from Reither and Wolfsburg skipper Marcel Schafer had a shot from the edge of the box that Neuer managed to deal with.
The first half was characterised by poor delivery and poor finishing from both sides. Schalke seemed to have suffered a hangover from their exploits at the Giuseppe Meazza, while Wolfsburg were playing like a team in the bottom three. Half time came with the match still goalless, with no team exerting dominance over the contest.
The second half started in the same manner as the first. Grafite blasted a shot wide, and any inroads made into either half were soon quashed by tackles of varying qualities.
Wolfsburg midfielder Cicero picked up a booking for a clumsy tackle on Farfan, before Schalke full back Atsuto Achida’s long range shot was dealt with by Benaglio. Edu came close after flashing a shot wide of Benaglio’s goal and deflected behind for corner.
Just after the hour mark, the home side finally came close to a goal. Substitute Alexander Baumjohann's blocked shot came back to him, but his rebound could only find the bar via a deflection. Baumjohann threatened again minutes later, Benaglio palming away a well-placed shot from 25 yards.
When the goal finally came, it was worth the wait. Schalke attacked down the right hand side and Farfan chipped the ball to Jose Manuel Jurado, who controlled the with his chest before volleying a shot across Benaglio’s body into the bottom corner.
The onus was now on Wolfsburg to salvage a valuable point in their quest for survival. Marcel Shafer failed to control the ball when it came to him on the edge of the box, and Die Wolfe had the ball in the net via an 87th minute Patrick Helmes shot, but to the dismay of the travelling fans, the linesman had already raised his flag.
This result leaves Wolfsburg still well and truly in the relegation scrap. Schalke get their third win in a week, but they remain in 10th place, level on points with Hoffenheim, who lost at Freiburg.
