Stood strong to deny Fahrmann just before half-time and was unshakable all night. Controlled his area well, and was a commanding presence in the air. Did superbly to deny Grosskreutz and Perisic from the spot.
Excellent performance by the the right-back, who was impeccable both in defence and in attack. Rarely gave anything away and went on a few very good runs.
The midfielder failed to impress against Kehl and Gundogan in the centre of the pitch and spent most of the time chasing shadows. His passing was nothing special either.
Caught flat-footed on a few occasions in the first-half, but generally did well. Had little trouble containing Lewandowski, and made a vital interception in the 83rd minute to head away just ahead of the striker in the six-yard area.
Forced to wear a silly hat after injuring himself, the centre-half delivered an strong performance in the heart of the defence. Showed good anticipation and positioning, and took his penalty in the shoot-out with aplomb.
The youngster had a wonderful first half, adding a bit of class to every Schalke attack. Impressed with his vision and passing, and did not struggle against the physically superior Borussia Dortmund players. Kept his level of performance after the break.
The youngster had a hard time dealing with Kagawa and Lowe, who often teamed up on him down the flank. Offered virtually nothing in attack, but improved in defensive sense as the game progressed.
The ex-Bayern Munich man failed to make an impact despite his best efforts to do so. Aside from a few good through-balls, the midfielder offered fairly little in attack, and generally had an average game.
Aside from a disappointing shot early in the game, the youngster did fairly little to justify his selection. Looked isolated and was replaced at half-time by Jurado.
The Real Madrid legend played a decent game, dropping deep to play with the ball more often than now. Was starved off support, but was a calming presence whenever in possession.
The Dutch striker did not have a single chance and will be disappointed with his performance. Failed to make an impact upfront as he desperately roamed across the box.
Did very well to deny Moravek in the 74th minute, but failed to save any of Schalke's penalties in the shoot-out. Was an assuring presence in the box.
The Germany international impressed with his distributions from the back, and had very little to do in defence. Showed great marking.
The reputation of the youngster is growing with every game and first-choice left-back Marcel Schmelzer could soon find his place in the team in danger. Ran tirelessly down the flank, and tried his luck from range on a couple of occasions. Sound defensively.
The Brazilian centre-back had little trouble containing Huntelaar, and was once again impressive at the heart of Dortmund's defence. Showed great anticipation to spot many of Raul's incisive runs.
Went on a few scintillating runs down the flank, but found his match in Fuchs, who was equally impressive on the wing. Did decently in defence, and made a few vital interceptions.
The Japan international once again dazzled on the ball, but his final pass was very disappointing at times. His finishing left a lot to be desired as he failed to convert some good chances.
The youngster created a few great opportunities for his team-mates and even sent Robert Lewandowski through on goal a minute after the restart, but the Polish striker failed to convert. Missed a good opportunity himself in 60th minute, but can hardly be blamed for Dortmund's inability to score in this game.
A frustrating night for the winger, who failed to make an impact upfront. Much running, but little end product from the Germany international. Missed his penalty in the shoot-out.
The midfielder had a very good game, superbly pressuring the opposition and spraying the ball around from the centre of the pitch. A dominating presence in the middle of the park.
Missed a couple of great opportunities in the first half, but was a vital component in almost every dangerous BVB attack. Released Lewandowski through on goal just before half-time, and created numerous chances, which his team-mates could not convert.
Missed three clear-cut chances as he first hit the post in the fifth minute from seven yards out, and then twice failed to convert with only Fahrmann to beat. A very disappointing performance by the striker.
