The hosts are flying high...
Sampdoria have one of the smaller squads in the Italian top flight but their start to the new season both in Italy and in Europe has been impressive indeed. A 2-0 win against Lazio at home was followed by a 3-3 draw with Juventus in Turin and this means that the Blucerchiati are currently third in the table with four points.
Domenico Di Carlo's side also made a strong start to their Europa League campaign on Thursday as they held Dutch giants PSV to a 1-1 draw in Eindhoven. However, Di Carlo was disappointed with the result and lamented, "I give my compliments to the team who did very well in the first half. After the break, we had 10 minutes where we struggled a little, but we were able to pick ourselves up.
"The goal at the end does not reward the efforts of the players, but the result is still a positive one. Samp demonstrated great character against a quality opponent in PSV."
He added, "The side must now take this result and carry the form into the [domestic] league. We have another important match on Sunday [against Napoli], and then we face Cagliari on Wednesday.
"Everyone is at my disposal, and wants to do well."
Yet To Fire
Napoli are expected to fight for a top four place in Serie A this season but the Azzurri's start to the campaign has been rather lukewarm. Two successive draws means that Walter Mazzarri's side are now currently 14th in the table.
Napoli also made a disappointing start to their Europa League campaign on Thursday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by FC Utrecht in Naples. Mazzarri reflected after the match, "The match was difficult, but we committed a few errors in defence. Whoever doesn't get regular game time had some apprehension.
"It is also difficult finding the right balance when things are changed around. The new players have only just arrived, but in any case, we could have won."
Napoli are not at their best when playing away from home but they do need maximum points in Genoa.
Sammarco, Poli, Tissone, Accardi and Guberti are unavailable.
