Roma remained in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League as a 1-0 victory over Chievo kept them in the hunt to finish in the top four in Serie A.

It was a tale of missed chances in today’s early kick off at the Olimpico but ironically the only goal of the came early on. The home side were dominant in the first few minutes of the game and Chievo’s defence collapsed in the fourth as a poor clearance by Roberto Guana led to Daniele De Rossi feeding Simone Perrotta who placed his shot in the back of the net against his former side to make it 1-0.

Chievo’s disastrous defending continued as Mirko Vucinic had the chance to double his team’s lead following a miss pass from Gennaro Sardo but Stefano Sorrentino saved the Montenegrin’s shot.

Just minutes later the Roma forward missed another as he put Francesco Totti’s cross over the bar. By this time Chievo were lucky to still be one goal away from equalising.

It was 20 minutes before the Flying Donkeys had their first shot on goal following a thunderous drive by Kevin Constant, but it was tipped over the bar for a corner by Doni.

The tempo of play started to slow down, however Totti did have a couple of chances on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net.

As the half-time whistle neared, a long ball by Totti found Vucinic who was inches away from scoring as Sorrentino glaringly watched the ball fly past the post.

A lapse in concentration by Roma nearly saw Sergio Pellissier find his way through but it wasn’t to be as Juan was there to block the shot.

Chievo were the better of the two sides at the beginning of the second half as Roma were constantly under threat but like the first half they failed to capitalise on their possession.

The best chance of the game for the visitors came when half time substitute Fernando Uribe was clear through on goal but somehow failed to properly connect with the ball and ended up conceding possession.

Roma were living on thin ice as their backline was constantly being put under pressure.

Close to the hour mark, the game flowed from end to end and there was little between the sides and Jeremy Menez went agonisingly close as his powerful strike hit the post.

The Giallorossi’s bad luck continued in the 69th minute when Sardo’s header hit his own bar and Vucinic couldn’t make the most of a goalmouth scramble, which again Chievo survived.

The final 20 minutes were reminiscent of the end of the first half as Roma sought to hold on to their lead. Unfortunately for the home side, defender Juan was taken off with an injury and was duly replaced by Simone Loria.

Matteo Brighi had the chance to finish the game off but like the rest of his team mates today, he dragged his shot wide.

The win for Roma means they are now just four points behind fourth-place side Lazio, who face Inter. Chievo remain seven points from the drop in 13th place with four games to play in Serie A.
