Goals from Ponzio and Bertolo saw Zaragoza register a narrow 2-1 victory over fellow relegation candidates Getafe at home to enhance their chances of sustaining top-flight status
Real Zaragoza gave their chances of survival in the Spanish top flight a massive boost by defeating fellow relegation candidates Getafe 2-1 at La Romareda on Monday evening.
Zaragoza asked the initial questions as Said Boutahar and Ikechukwu Uche tried their luck, and went ahead in the 14th minute when Leonardo Ponzio’s right-footed shot from outside the Getafe penalty box found its way into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Six minutes later Nicolas Bertolo had his attempt on the visitors’ goal saved and although Getafe had three subsequent chances, Bertolo doubled Zaragoza’s lead on 35 minutes when he turned home Uche’s through-ball.
However, Michel’s side did not lose heart and halved the deficit in injury time of the first-half when Francisco Casquero found the target with a right-footed shot from the centre of the Zaragoza box.
The visitors from Madrid could have equalised eight minutes after the interval had Adrian Colunga’s shot been on target but thereafter Javier Aguirre’s team started to impose themselves with Ivan Obradovic, Boutahar, Maurizio Lanzaro and Bertolo coming close.
Uche had another chance to increase the home side’s advantage late in the match but his shot from the centre of the box went narrowly wide.
The 2-1 victory means that Zaragoza are now three points above the relegation zone in 17th place, just a point behind Getafe, who are 16th.
