Real Zaragoza 1-0 Almeria: Diego Alves' own goal lifts hosts out of the relegation zone

Almeria goalkeeper Diego Alves scored a cruel own goal to lift Zaragoza out of the dropzone while his own club look doomed for relegation

Real Zaragoza earned crucial three points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Almeria to climb out of the relegation zone and leave their Andalucian opposition doomed for the drop.

The home side were deserved victors, creating the majority of chances but had to wait until the 70th minute for the only goal of the game.

Club captain Gabi picked up the ball before driving a powerful shot towards goal that hit goalkeeper Diego Alves on the back before rolling into the net, a devastating way for any team to lose such an important game.

Javier Aguirre's men were able to hold on for the win but were disappointed to have influential midfielder Ander sent off in the 90th minute for a dangerous lunge.

Zaragoza have now moved upto 16th in the Primera Division with Osasuna entering the drop zone with only five games to go in the championship this season.

Zaragoza travel to the Bernabeu on Sunday for a tricky fixture against Real Madrid while Almeria will be looking to complete the great escape with a home game against Sevilla next on the agenda.
