Liverpool couldn't find a way past the excellent Alex McCarthy today, the young keeper pulled off save after save, his best diving to his left to deny a fierce strike from Steven Gerrard. The home side pick up a point but lacked any real threat up top and look to be relegation certainties. Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool will look at the game as two points dropped and slip further behind Everton for the race for sixth place.
90' + 5'
Referee Mark Clattenburg blows for full-time at the Madejski, 0-0.
90' + 4'
He can't have minute's rest the Reading keeper, this time he saves a swerving shot from Gerrard. "England's number one!" chants come from the home crowd.
90' + 2'
Yes, you guessed it, another great save by McCarthy! He denies Suarez yet again with a wonderful save to his right. Man of the match today.
It's unbelievable how Liverpool have not found the back of the net today, Sturridge is sent clear and whilst one-on-one, he thrashes his shot over the bar.
Four minutes of added time to be added on at the Madejski, can Reading hold on?
Yellow Card Nick Blackman
The Reading keeper now halts Suarez again! This is some performance McCarthy who saves and holds the ball after Suarez shoots from ten yards out.
Remarkable save by McCarthy to deny Gerrard! The Liverpool captain picks up the ball on the edge of the area from Downing, shoots first time but McCarthy denies him with a great diving save with his left hand.
It's Downing's turn to go close this time for Liverpool, he cuts in from the right but shoots just wide.
The defender is able to continue, much to the relief of the home crowd.
A worry for the home side as Sean Morrison hurts his knee and Nigel Adkins has used all three of his substitutions.
The Uruguayan goes close again as he weaves his way into the penalty area but his shot is saved by McCarthy.
Adam Le Fondre
Liverpool hit the post! Suarez wins a free kick under the challenge of Carrico, he gets up to take it himself and clips the outside of the post from a near 30 yards out.
The last one was nothing different as Liverpool clear. However Reading keep the pressure on and McAnuff forces a save from Reina who tips his shot over the bar.
Another dangerous free kick position for the home side, they haven't profited from these types of position today.
Another chance for the away side but Sturridge fires the ball across the penalty box too hard for Coutinho who can't control his shot and fires wide.
Reading substitute Daniel Carrico seems to have changed the game for the home side, good energy and closing down in midfield from the former Sporting Lisbon captain.
Bombardment on the Liverpool goal! Reina gets nowhere near a McCleary corner from the right, a goal-mouth scramble sees the ball at Guthrie's feet at the edge of the box but his shot is blocked with Reina in no-mans land.
After Coutinho shoots narrowly wide for Liverpool, Reading go up the other end of the pitch and very nearly take the lead through Noel Hunt who slides onto the end of a McAnuff cross only to be denied by a fine save by Pepe Reina.
Penalty claim for the home side! Captain McAnuff, who's found space regularly on the left, goes down under the challenge of substitute Downing but Mark Clattenburg isn't interested.
A half chance for the home side as Guthrie finds himself in a bit of space on the edge of the box, but his shot is well blocked.
There hasn't been the same dominance in the second period for Liverpool as there was in the first, but they have quietened the home crowd after there bright start since the break.
A rare lull moment in today's game as Liverpool are struggling to break down the Reading defence.
The home side have started the second half with much more enthusiasm than the first however, definitely improved since the interval.
Yellow Card Danny Guthrie
A cynical foul by Danny Guthrie as he halts Sturridge from making inroads down the Reading left. Referee Mark Clattenburg attempts to give the former Newcastle midfielder a yellow card, only to realise he's lost them and has to pick up some spares from the touchline.
Goal disallowed! Gerrard finds space on the right, he crosses for Coutinho who flicks the ball into the net elegantly. Unfortunately for the Brazilian, he was stood in an offside position.
Reading retain possession from the restart, McCleary creates some space for himself on the right, crosses to the far post where there is no teammate attacking the ball. The winger's play deserved better.
The second half gets underway.
Goal.com's man at the Madejski Stadium Tom McKeown gives his take on the first half: "They go into the break goalless at the Majeski Stadium, but Reading have so often nearly been the architects of their own downfall, giving the ball away numerous times. Liverpool though, thanks to some last-ditch blocks and good saves by Alex McCarthy, have been unable to convert their dominance into a half-time lead."
Somehow this game enters half-time with the score goalless. Liverpool have squandered many chances so far today and Brendan Rodgers will be disappointed that his team aren't ahead. Nigel Adkins on the other hand will want his players to cut out careless mistakes which fortunately haven't proved costly so far.
45' + 1'
Referee Mark Clattenburg calls for half-time.
From the resulting corner, Sturridge somehow misses from six yards out after he finds the ball at his feet. His lethal shot is remarkably saved by McCarthy.
Liverpool earn their fifth corner of the game after Sturridge finds Jordan Henderson at the edge of the area, his shot is headed behind from Morrison.
Danny Guthrie's free kick is easily cleared by the Liverpool defence, much better quality is needed if the home side are going to get anything from today's game.
Yellow Card Lucas Leiva
Reading break menacingly and Gareth McCleary wins a free kick on the edge of the Liverpool box after a challenge from Lucas who picks up a yellow card for his troubles.
Another chance goes squandered for Liverpool as Coutinho slices the ball over from little over eight yards out with the goal at his mercy.
A wonderful challenge by Jamie Carragher prevents Noel Hunt latching onto Stephen Kelly's cross from the left. Excellent defending from the Anfield servant.
It's little surprise Reading sit bottom of the table as for the third time, they gift Liverpool position in their own half. A better pass from Jordan Henderson and another chance could of materialized.
Reading give the ball away again! This time it's Chris Gunter who nearly gifts Liverpool a first goal. Sturridge picks up the loose ball, slips in Suarez who again is halted by McCarthy in the Reading goal.
Jobi McAnuff earns a free-kick from Glen Johnson, however he takes it quickly much to the dismay of the home crowd as it was in a particularly dangerous position.
Good play by Gareth McCleary and Reading are starting to mount some pressure of their own at the Madejski.
Fair play to the traveling Liverpool fans, they haven't stopped singing in the first half hour or so. Although I'd imagine they'd like a goal or two to materialize from the away side's dominance so far.
Liverpool are dominant as they can be, only thing missing is a goal for the visitors. Reading will be extremely lucky to keep a clean sheet today.
From the resulting corner, Jamie Carragher goes close as his header goes just over the bar.
Sean Morrison nearly commits football suicide for Reading as he gives possession away to Gerrard, the ball eventually ends at the feet of Coutinho who forces a fine save from McCarthy.
Right-back Glen Johnson is in acres of space every time Liverpool venture forward, along with Gerrard in the centre of midfield. Dangerous for the Royals.
After an incredibly quiet start to the game, the visitors are looking increasingly threatening minute by minute.
Liverpool go close after brilliant play by their front three, Coutinho plays the ball towards Sturridge who intelligently dummies the ball into the path of Suarez, his elegant chip is cleared off the line by Chris Gunter.
To say the game has started rather lethargically would be a great understatement. It couldn't be the first 0-0 in this meeting's history, could it?
Very nearly a controversial moment as Noel Hunt challenges Pepe Reina in the air, the Spanish keeper seemed to have dropped the ball but luckily Reina is able to gather second time around.
The Reds have took a foot-hold on the game and Sturridge goes close to playing the perfect pass for the run of Suarez but it's just slightly over-hit by the England international and McCarthy gathers.
A poor corner by captain Steven Gerrard is easily cleared by the Reading defence.
Liverpool have responded well and Coutinho and Suarez link well to win the visitor's their first corner.
The corner leads to nothing however as Pogrebnyak fouls Reina underneath his crossbar.
Reading see the first of the early action, keeping the ball well down Liverpool's right and McAnuff forces a first corner from Lucas.
Liverpool get the action underway.
Tributes followed by a minute's silence to be held at the Madejski in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans who tragically lost their lives at Hillsborough 24 years ago.
There has never been a goalless draw between today's two sides in nine meetings, so expect goals at the Madejski this afternoon! Kick-off is less than 15 minutes away.
Nigel Adkins is still searching for his first point as Reading manager and will find it hard to come by against a Liverpool side hoping to leapfrog neighbours Everton in sixth place.
And Liverpool: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Enrique; Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard; Sturridge, Suarez, Coutinho. Subs: Jones, Assaidi, Downing, Coates, Suso, Shelvey, Skrtel.
Lets begin with the two teams, Reading line up as: McCarthy; Gunter, Morrison, Mariappa, Kelly; Karacan, Guthrie; McAnuff, Hunt, McCleary; Pogrebnyak. Subs: Taylor, Harte, Pearce, Carrico, Le Fondre, Blackman.
