Shots on Target
That Karim Rekik miss could prove so costly for PSV who know that they must score at the Giuseppe Meazza in the second leg next Wednesday evening if they are to stand any chance of reaching the UEFA Champions League knockout stages for the first time in five years. Thanks for joining me, Max Bentley, on this Goal.com live commentary. Until next time, goodbye.
FT: PSV 1-1 MILAN. Stephan El Shaarawy scores a crucial away goal for Milan who hold a slender advantage going into the second leg. Phillip Cocu's youthful side had numerous chances and levelled through Tim Matavz but could not find a winner late on. Fascinating game at the Philips Stadion.
90' + 3'
Niang has looked bright in the few minutes since he has come onto the field and he collects Abate's pass before unleashing a shot from distance which flashes high over the crossbar.
90' + 1'
Milan are ending strongly here and El Shaarawy nearly snatches a winner but cannot make good enough contact with his volley and witnesses the ball ricochet off of him and behind for a goal kick. Into stoppage time here.
MEXES NEARLY WINS IT! Niang plays a clever low corner to the edge of the box which Mexes looks set to sweep home, only to take his eye off the ball at the last moment and completely miskick. Let-off for PSV.
Stijn Schaars is suffering from cramp in the closing stages and he is withdrawn for young Swedish midfielder, Oscar Hiljemark.
MILAN NEARLY WIN IT! The two substitutes, Niang and Poli, combine excellently in the final third, and the latter receives the ball just inside the box before his placed effort is fingertipped over the top by Zoet.
Depay plays a glorious diagonal ball over the Milan defence for Jozefzoon but the youngster cannot quite get the ball under control and a good chance goes begging.
Montolivo whips a corner into the box and Mexes meets it unmarked but can only head the ball over the top. Five minutes remaining in Eindhoven.
Allegri makes a second change with M'Baye Niang replacing Kevin Prince Boateng. Some fresh legs in attack, it seems.
GOOD CHANCE FOR MILAN! Montolivo finds himself in behind the PSV midfield and he strides forward with options left and right before getting caught in two minds and playing the ball straight into the legs of the nearest defender. Very poor decision making there.
The home fans aren't happy as they believe Milan are running down the clock and time-wasting. The referee gives out a warning but refuses to dish out any cards.
Kevin Prince Boateng hasn't got forward as much as he would have liked today but he does so on this occasion, switching the ball onto his left foot before firing wide of the target. Ten minutes to go at the Philips Stadion.
BALOTELLI GOES CLOSE! Montolivo curls a corner into the PSV box which Balotelli rises highest to meet, but he can only head over under pressure from Bruma.
Nigel De Jong
Substitution for either side. Jurgen Locadia is on for the hosts in place of Tim Matavz whilst Andrea Poli makes his Milan Champions League debut, in place of Nigel De Jong.
WHAT A MISS FROM REKIK! Milan fail to deal with a corner and Wijnaldum clips the ball back into the middle, where Rekik meets it unmarked, but somehow heads wide of the target with the goal gaping. Will Cocu's side live to rue that opportunity?
PSV GO CLOSE! Willems' cross finds its way to Jozefzoon on the right corner of the box and the youngster connects with his effort brilliantly, only to see Muntari rush across and prevent it from nestling in the far corner. Great block from the Ghanaian.
Bruma has already caused Abbiati problems once with his long-range shooting but he doesn't this time as his fierce shot flashes wide of the target.
El Shaarawy spreads the ball out wide to Balotelli but the Azzurri striker's shot is well blocked by the shins of Rekik. You fancy that there is still another goal in this game.
Maher whips a teasing cross into the Milan box which is diverted behind for a corner by the head of De Jong. Can PSV find a winner in the remaining 18 minutes?
Yellow Card Mario Balotelli
Mario Balotelli is shown a yellow card, much to the delight of the home fans, for tugging back on the shirt of Bruma.
It's been a solid second debut for Park Ji-Sung and he receives a huge round of applause as he is replaced by Florian Jozefzoon.
Balotelli is quickly to his feet and he looks to curl an effort from distance into the bottom corner but places his shot just wide of the post.
Balotelli is the next to frustrate the home support as he goes down dramatically after a half-challenge from Willems. The referee plays on and El Shaarawy's cross from the left is well blocked by Brenet.
The PSV fans are furious as the referee fails to produce a card to Montolivo for time-wasting. Milan will be delighted to take a 1-1 here.
Yellow Card Sulley Muntari
Sulley Muntari is the second Milan player to be cautioned after a mistimed challenge on Maher. The PSV fans are bouncing here, they sense a second.
Goal Tim Matavz
PSV EQUALISE! Jeffrey Bruma strides forward from defence and unleashes a swerving shot from distance, which Abbiati parries into the path of Matavz to head into the corner. The veteran goalkeeper will be disappointed with that, 1-1.
Milan win a free kick 30 or so yards from goal and Balotelli steps up but his ambitious effort is comfortably gathered by Zoet.
Milan come forward again and Bruma is alert to produce a vital block to prevent El Shaarawy from converting Abate's right-wing cross.
PSV have not shown the same attacking threat which they carried for the majority of the first half. Cocu must be tempted to make a change here. I'm not convinced that the wide men, Depay and Wijnaldum, have done enough for the Netherlands outfit.
This is a good spell for Milan and Boateng wins another corner when his header deflects off the back of Brenet. Can they snatch a second away goal?
IT SHOULD BE 2-0! Balotelli produces an inch-perfect cross to pick out El Shaarawy at the back post but the striker waits for the ball to come to him and Willems nips in to divert the ball behind for a corner.
Moments after Park's shot is well closed down by Muntari, PSV attack again but Depay's weak shot is comfortably gathered by Abbiati.
EL SHAARAWY NEARLY GRABS A SECOND! Balotelli diverts Abate's pass over the PSV defence for El Shaarawy and the 20-year-old chips the ball over the advancing Zoet, only to see the ball bounce narrowly wide of the post.
Balotelli causes Brenet problems down the left and his chipped cross into the middle just misses the head of El Shaarawy, allowing Zoet to pluck the ball out of the air.
Milan get the ball rolling for the second half. Can Cocu's side find an equaliser?
HT: PSV 0-1 MILAN. Stephan El Shaarawy's header is the difference at the break but you could hardly call it a deserved lead for Milan, who have been on the back foot for the majority of the first half. Mario Balotelli and Adam Maher have both witnessed their shots come back off the woodwork in what has been a fascinating 45 minutes. Let's hope for more in the second period.
45' + 2'
Yellow Card Adam Maher
Adam Maher joins Boateng in the book for a shove in the back of Balotelli. Looked a bit harsh, that.
Kerim Rekik is fortunate to escape a booking after a cynical challenge through the back of Balotelli. Milan are just looking to see out the first half here. In truth, they have been fortunate not to concede.
GREAT CHALLENGE FROM REKIK! Milan threaten when El Shaarawy pokes the ball through for Montolivo and just as he is about to shoot, the on-loan Manchester City star produces a crucial last-ditch challenge.
Matavz produces a neat turn to escape Mexes down the left but his cross is slightly overhit and Wijnaldum's header goes narrowly wide.
Yellow Card Kevin-Prince Boateng
Kevin Prince Boateng is shown the first yellow card after of the match after being adjudged to have used his elbow in an aerial challenge.
MAHER HITS THE BAR! Abate puts Milan in trouble with a sloppy backpass and Depay feeds in Maher who jinks past the challenge of Zapata before thumping a right-footed shot against the bar. Mexes produces a brave header to prevent Matavz from knocking in the rebound.
Milan launch an attack of their own and Boateng curls a teasing low cross into the middle which Zoet does well to race off his line and claim. That was good goalkeeping as Balotelli was ready to pounce at the back post.
HOW MANY MORE CHANCES DO PSV NEED? Stijn Schaars chips a perfectly-weighed ball over the Milan defence and Maher meets it with a well-executed volley which draws a smart save from Abbiati.
PSV THREATEN AGAIN! Depay delivers a teasing cross into the box and Abbiati flaps at it, under pressure from Matavz, and is relieved to see Mexes clear the ball upfield.
Milan threaten when Balotelli cuts the ball back for El Shaarawy on the edge of the box. However, the forward is denied a second as Brenet shows good anticipation to track back and make a crucial interception.
Willems' long ball is headed to the edge of the box by Mexes and Matavz is there to meet it, but his ambitious left-footed volley slices wide of the target.
Wijnaldum shows explosive pace to burst past Emanuelson down the right but the former-Ajax man races back excellently to prevent the cross from going into the box. The play has been mainly concentrated down PSV's left-hand side.
The home support shout for a penalty when Park Ji-Sung goes down in the box under a challenge from Boateng. Once again, the referee does not deem there to be sufficient contact and play continues.
GREAT SAVE FROM ABBIATI! Willems bombs forward from left-back again and plays the ball into Maher just outside the box. The summer signing takes a touch and unleashes a vicious strike which is pushed away from the bottom corner by Abbiati.
The home fans jeer as Balotelli goes down easily under the challenge of Brenet in the box. The referee is not interested in the striker's appeals and waves play on.
PSV look to restore parity when Schaars finds Depay 25 yards from goal but the 19-year-old snatches at his shot and drags it wide of Abbiati's right-hand post.
Montolivo concedes a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the box but Depay's effort cannot get over the wall and Milan clear the danger.
BALOTELLI HITS THE BAR! PSV look a bit rattled after that goal and it nearly gets worse when Boateng lays the ball off for Balotelli just outside the box and the Italian striker's effort is touched onto the bar excellently by the fingertips of Zoet.
Assist Ignazio Abate
Goal Stephan El Shaarawy
MILAN TAKE THE LEAD! It's completely against the run of play but the Rossoneri won't care. Montolivo plays the ball inside Depay and Abate is there to cross into the middle for the unmarked El Shaarawy to head past Zoet. Poor defending from Cocu's side. 1-0.
Abbiati is fouled from the resulting corner and Milan attack down the other end. Balotelli floats a ball over the PSV defence but Muntari cannot get enough contact on his overhead kick and the ball goes wide of the target.
ANOTHER CHANCE FOR PSV! Abate does well to stand up Depay and the young attacker lays the ball back for Willems, whose fiercely-struck effort deflects off the knee of Zapata and behind for a corner.
Balotelli looks to flick Mexes' pass into the path of Boateng but Bruma is there to make a good interception. Allegri's side are yet to get going in this match.
GOOD CHANCE FOR PSV! Willems is getting into some good advanced positions early on and he produces an excellent pass to release Park Ji-Sung in the area. The South Korean has no-one in front of him but opts to play a neat flick to Wijnaldum, whose shot stings the palms of Abbiati.
Memphis Depay produces some neat footwork to cut inside Abate on the left flank but his shot lacks power and Abbiati gathers.
MILAN GO CLOSE! A lapse of communication between Brenet and Zoet allows El Shaarawy to capitalise on a loose ball in the PSV box but the goalkeeper responds well to smother the ball at the striker's feet.
It's a brilliant start from PSV here and they come forward again but Matavz's wayward shot deflects off Mexes and trickles through for Abbiati to claim.
The average age of this PSV side is just over 22. Will Cocu's youthful side be able to cope with the pressure this evening?
PSV NEARLY TAKE THE LEAD! Milan are yet to touch the ball and Tim Matavz finds space to shoot from the edge of the box and his scuffed effort deflects off the toes of Adam Maher and rolls the wrong side of the post, with Christian Abbiati wrongfooted. That would have been some start!
PSV get this Champions League play-off underway in their bright red strip. Milan are sporting their away white jerseys.
PSV saw off the challenge of Belgian side Zulte-Waregem 5-0 in the third qualiying round and they sit top of the Eredivisie table with three wins from three.
Massimiliano Allegri has expressed his concern about Milan's fitness levels ahead of this contest. Unlike their Dutch opponents, the Rossoneri have not yet kicked off their domestic campaign. Will it be problem? Kickoff is under five minutes away.
As for Milan, Mattia De Sciglio is unavailable due to injury, meaning that Urby Emanuelson starts at left-back. Mario Balotelli has shaken off a knee problem to partner Kevin Prince Boateng and Stephan El Shaarawy in attack.
Park Ji-Sung has regained fitness to make his second debut for PSV although young Belgian prodigy Zakaria Bakkali has not recovered in time. Karim Rekik starts in defence up against former Manchester City teammate Mario Balotelli.
MILAN (4-3-3): Abbiati; Abate, Mexes, Zapata, Emanuelson; Montolivo, De Jong, Muntari; Boateng, Balotelli, El Shaarawy. Milan bench: Amelia, Constant, Zaccardo, Nocerino, Poli, Niang, Petagna
PSV (4-2-3-1): Zoet; Brenet, Bruma, Rekik, Willems; Schaars, Maher; Park, Wijnaldum, Depay; Matavz. PSV bench: Tyton, Jorgensen, Arias, Hiljemark, Toivonen, Locadia, Jozefzoon.
Without any further ado, here are tonight's lineups...
Perhaps the most important fixture between these sides came back in the 2004/05 semi-finals when two goals in the second leg from Cocu were not enough to prevent PSV from going out on away goals. Park Ji-Sung also scored over the two legs and he makes his second debut this evening.
PSV won the prestigious trophy in 1988 but that is no match for the Italian giants who have lifted it on no fewer than seven occasions. Can Phillip Cocu's youthful side provide an upset? Bringing you all the action as it unfolds from the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, my name is Max Bentley.
PSV have not been in the UEFA Champions League group stages since the 2008/09 season but with a new coach and blossoming youthful approach, it is hoped that they can re-establish their position as one of Europe's best club sides. However, in order to do so, they will need to overcome the second most successful side in the history of the tournament, Milan.
