A virtual spectator for much of the game, with speculative free-kicks his only concern until Northern Ireland's shock opener. Powerless to prevent McGinn's superb lofted finish when it came.
A colossus in the air, but endured a dodgy evening positionally. He and Pepe only had Lafferty to concern them, but the pair allowed the rangy Sion forward to run off them to their cost for McGinn's goal.
A busy, but frustrating performance from the Valencia man; he constantly got in dangerous areas only to drift crosses into no man's land or turn inside with Nani or Ronaldo outside him. McGinn goal came down his side.
The Real Madrid player's class was evident with some imposing defending and nice touches. However, he and Alves seemed to have some communication issues and let Lafferty run loose on a few occasions.
A relatively quiet night at his home stadium, as he was unable to provide any attacking thrust down Portugal's left and had little to worry about from Cory Evans or Aaron Hughes.
Endured a pretty miserable evening in which his passing seemed a yard over-hit and his normally impeccable touch deserted him somewhat. Saw Ronaldo increasingly rob him of space in the middle, as Portugal's desperation grew.
The midfielder is trying to stake a claim for a spot in the side ahead of Raul Meireles - but is not worth it on this performance. Micael often picked the difficult ball. Failed to bring his form for Braga to the international stage.
Another mixed evening for the Manchester United winger, who started brightly and caused problems. However, moves often fizzled out around him and, despite McGivern being there for the taking, he often slowed attacks down.
Bento's deep-lying midfielder kept it simple and didn't give the ball away much. However, with the time and space afforded him, he could have made much more of a contribution in an attacking sense.
Michael O'Neill declared pre-match that he was hoping for an off-night from the Real Madrid star, who duly obliged on his 100th appearance for the Seleccao. Showed his undoubted quality, but found his best efforts frustrated.
The Zaragoza striker did his normal turn for much of the match: working hard, but failing to provide a cutting edge. However, the former Spurs man has a penchant for important goals and turned home a well-taken equaliser.
Had his work cut out all evening: not least from his own players - with Cathcart hitting his own crossbar and captain Steven Davis nearly slicing past Carroll into his own net. Made a series of top saves to earn his side a draw second-half.
The Hibernian full-back - on loan from Man City - stuck doggedly to his task throughout. Perhaps the weaker link at the back, both Ronaldo and Nani caused him problems without exploiting the extra time and space McGivern afforded them.
Excellent performance from the Fulham man who kept the right flank nice and solid for Michael O'Neill. Dovetailed well with Corry Evans to limit the threat of both Nani and Ronaldo, who both enjoyed more success down Portugal's right.
Outstanding at the heart of Northern Ireland's defence. The Manchester United star was excellent. Composed on the ball, intelligent in all he did, Evans stock can only rise with performances like this. Will be disappointed to concede late.
A gritty performance from the Fulham defender, who was drafted into a holding midfield role. His pressing helped keep the Portuguese at arm's length and frustrated them all evening. Tireless.
Brilliant performance from the Blackpool centre-half, whose defensive partnership with Jonny Evans was subject to a severe examination in the second-half. Rode his luck before the break when the ball ricocheted off him onto the crossbar.
What a goal from the Aberdeen youngster. Worked tirelessly and was rewarded for a fantastic run when Lafferty played him in in the first half. Still had work to do, but lifted the ball over Patricio for a truly memorable effort.
A tidy and energetic performance from the Hull City player. He linked very well with Hughes defensively, but was unable to do much in an attacking sense.
Excellent performance. Was energetic and tidy in possession and looked to offer a threat going forward. Faded in the second-half, as his legs were sapped by his efforts.
Excellent captain's display from the Southampton midfielder. Snapped away in the tackle and was very neat and tidy in possession. Nearly sliced one effort into his own goal, but deserved the bit of luck that came his way.
Hard work for the big target man, but battled admirably. Showed that he has a fair amount of quality too with a lovely turn and through ball for McGinn's goal. Excellent display given the fact he was playing against two top centre-halves in Alves and Pepe.
