Palermo 1-0 Chievo: Fabrizio Miccoli Penalty Grounds Flying Donkeys

The visitors from Verona paid the penalty as Miccoli struck a late winner from the spot in Coppa Italia action...

Palermo have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia courtesy of a late penalty from fan-favourite Fabrizio Miccoli against Chievo Verona, who bow out of the domestic competition.

The two sides had played out a 0-0 in Serie A on Sunday at the Stadio Bentegodi, but the Rosanero made their home advantage count on this occasion to secure a 1-0 victory.

Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu saved the hosts in the first-half with a wonderful stop against Davide Moscardelli's fiercely hit volley from the edge of the area. Minutes later Miccoli, who was active from start to finish, failed to convert and was denied by Lorenzo Squizzi in goal after being played through by Josip Ilicic and the first-half ended 0-0.

The opening of the second-half saw Palermo hit the crossbar through Miccoli's curling effort. Pajtim Kasami then had a goal disallowed, but it was a sign of things to come for the Sicilians who were creating the better opportunities.

The match looked destined for extra-time before Rincon inexplicably fouled Miccoli in the area. The 'Romario of Salento' picked himself up and scored the lone goal of the match in the 80th minute.

Palermo are now through to the next round, where they will face Parma.
