• St. James' Park, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
Referee: M. Jones
• Attendance: 49164
Y. Gouffran 27'
J. Rodriguez 65'
FULL TIME: Newcastle 1-1 Southampton - there may have been a surplus of goals today, but the action reached fever-pitch more often than not in what was a hugely open clash of top-six contenders! I'm Livio Caferoglu and it's farewell from me.
90' + 8'
We're into an EIGHTH (you read that right) minute of injury time now, with Newcastle on the attack following the sudden breakout of tempers on the sidelines!
90' + 6'
90' + 6'
Rodriguez is replaced by lanky teenage defender Gallagher as Southampton make one final foray into the Newcastle box from a throw...
90' + 5'
Debuchy drills a cross into the box from the resulting free kick, which Davis crucially blocks!
90' + 4'
Yellow Card Morgan Schneiderlin
90' + 4'
Schneiderlin is shown the yellow card for a bad foul, and drama has erupted near the dugout! Details are imminent...
90' + 2'
Chances being spread across either side of the pitch but the killer pass is currently lacking. Debuchy tries to play in Cisse with a through ball, but the offside flag is raised.
Six minutes of injury time will be added on.
HOW BIZARRE!! The referee Mike Jones takes a clatter after Sissoko accidentally swings his arm in the official's face while in conversation with the midfielder. Gazzaniga, on the ground, hit the Frenchman's leg in a bid to push him away.
Gazzaniga bravely jumps for the ball and collects it after Ben Arfa smashes a shot at goal which takes a heavy deflection. Sissoko showed fine footwork to cut the ball back into the box.
Chambers whips up a ball from deep, which eventually finds Lambert at the back post, but as he takes the ball down, the linesman's flag goes up.
BRILLIANT BEN ARFA!! The attacker takes on a succession of Southampton shirts in the final third before making his way into the area, but his cross is well blocked.
Tiote launches a speculative attempt which he drags just wide of the post from distance. This one could go either way!
CHEEKY!!! The full-back's fellow subsitute Ben Arfa tries to outsmart Gazzaniga with a curled free kick towards the goalkeeper's near post, but the Argentine tips away for a corner!
Haidara is hauled on in place of Santon, and within a few seconds of his introduction he helps win his side a free kick after doubling up with Sissoko.
Shaw goes for a through ball in a bid to find Rodriguez for the winner, but once again the offside flag comes to Newcastle's rescue.
GAZZANIGA ALMOST GIFTS NEWCASTLE A SECOND GOAL!! You heard that right... an awful kick-out drops straight to Remy, who pounces on the gaffe near the edge of the box, but the striker's finish is a fraction too high!
Hatem Ben Arfa
OOOOOOOH!!!! Newcastle fail to deal with a corner and it almost comes to bite them back where it hurts the most, but Rodriguez's free header in the box - despite looping ominously - eventually lands in Krul's gloves!
ALMOST A SUDDEN REPLY! Debuchy fires a shot low and hard at Gazzaniga, who instinctively blocks the full-back's attempt.
That was a deserved equaliser from Southampton, who have looked a far more balanced outfit since the half-time introductions of Schneiderlin and Lallana. Their change in system has also allowed the Saints to bring out the best in Lambert, underlining their flexibility further.
Yellow Card Cheikh Tiote
Assist Steven Davis
Goal Jay Rodriguez
THAT IS A SUPERB GOAL!!!! Southampton are relentless as they counter at the speed of light once more through Rodriguez, and the striker plays a deft one-two with Davis who returns delicately through the legs of Coloccini, before he sweeps home the finish with the goal at his mercy!
WHAT AN EFFORT!!! Davis goes for the spectacular from some way out and sees his half-volleyed attempt creep just over the crossbar!
Yellow Card Jack Cork
THE CHANCE GOES BEGGING FOR SOUTHAMPTON! Lallana breaks at the speed of light as he leaves Santon in his wake and probes into the box, but his cut-back to find a team-mate is hugely disappointing as the ball is quickly cleared!
Davis is fortunate to avoid the referee's book following another deliberate trip on Tiote. Meanwhile, Ameobi's performance comes to an abrupt end. Enter the eventual star of the 2011-12 campaign - Papiss Cisse!
Ameobi's physical prowwess is causing one or two problems for Southampton, with another accurate headed attempt this time whistling just wide of Gazzaniga's goal
Not for the first time this afternoon, Rodriguez attracts the offside flag for again mistiming his run to reach Lambert's lobbed through ball.
REMY!!!! The French forward hits a snapshot on the half-volley from the edge of the box, and it is well saved by Gazzaniga.
Lambert has definitely grown into stature since Osvaldo's half-time exit. Twice has he been played in and looked to flick on lay-offs for team-mates. His ability to hold the ball up must be utilised in that manner more often if Southampton are to stage a comeback today.
Lambert scoops up a tantalising pass for Rodriguez, who successfully connects with the ball in the box, but his strike at Krul is too weak as he is slightly off-balance.
It's Southampton's turn to feel the wrath of the offside rule as Lallana times his run onto Rodriguez's through ball too early.
Newcastle already try to unlock the Saints defence within a minute of the restart, but the offside flag denies Santon from finding Sissoko.
Pablo Daniel Osvaldo
Southampton make a bold statement of intent by bringing on talismen Morgan Schneiderlin and Adam Lallana on during the interval in place of - perhaps surprisingly - Ward-Prowse and Osvaldo. Anyway, the second half is under way!
The half-time whistle is blown, with the score reading Newcastle 1-0 Southampton!
One additional minute will be played.
Ameobi beats a shocking Southampton offside trap but his lack of composure allows Shaw to get back in time. However, Anita doubles up with the Nigerian striker and shows great feet to twist his way into the box and cut a ball back which no-one can read! Moments later, Osvaldo is flagged offside for making his run to latch onto Lambert's through pass too early.
WHAT A WASTE! Santon is caught out by an onrushing Lambert down the right wing and drills in a ball which is neither a shot at goal or an assist for Osvaldo to tuck away.
Sissoko is again found in an advanced position, which is in clear view of the Southampton goal, but *again* he is denied by a trailing leg from Hooiveld. That was a vital interception!
Lambert shows great resillience to duel with Coloccini near the corner flag and win his side a corner. There's a slight hint of handball in the box from the subsequent corner, but the referee ignores the crowd's appeals.
OOOOH! Anita is felled by Rodriguez in an inside-left position near the Saints box, and Santon smashes a piledriver at goal from around 25 yards out which swerves just over the bar!
A ball is launched into the box, which eventually reaches Ameobi, but he is well-marshalled by the Southampton defence and can only head the ball limply into the gloves of Gazzaniga.
Davis takes one for the team as he cynically scythes down Tiote, who is ready to launch an attack from his holding position in midfield. There's no booking again, however.
No idea what Hooiveld was playing at there, attempting to hack the ball away with his left foot despite being clearly off balance... Anyway it's down to Southampton now. Can they come back from the dead at St James' Park?
Goal Yoan Gouffran
NEWCASTLE DRAW FIRST BLOOD!!! A free kick is launched into the box from the halfway line, which Williamson telepathically nods down - past a shell-shocked Lambert - into Gouffran's path, and the Frenchman shifts past Gazzaniga before tapping the ball into an empty net!
The gangly Argentine stopper is in on the action again, albeit in an attacking position, as his through ball to find Ameobi is ruled offside.
Coloccini lives up to his name by being in the right place at the right time to mop up another wonderful Chambers cross. Hooiveld then wastes the chance by putting the ball into the touchline after failing to find Shaw.
WHERE WAS THE QUICK-THINKING? Sissoko is caught horribly in two minds as he capitalises on a misjudgment from Shaw to set up a two-v-two situation, but he hesitates far too long and can only pass backwards, allowing the Saints to plough enough bodies back and kill off the attack.
Osvaldo is again involved, but it's another case of his colleagues not finding him on his wavelength. The striker lays off Lambert, which results in Newcastle breaking up play and retaining possession of the ball.
A delightful cross is played into the Toon box from the right-hand side by the lively Chambers, yet Osvaldo is adjudged to be in an offside position.
Shaw manages to evade the auxilary left-winger Sissoko but with the use of his hand. No yellow card is in sight, however - a decision which Alan Pardew expresses his frustration to the fourth official about.
Southampton react well to that close shave as they launch a counterattack, which Osvaldo slips into the feet of Ward-Prowse near the area, but the starlet's shot goes straight into Krul's arms.
WHAT A CHANCE!!! Pandemonium ensues in the Southampton box as Cork misreads the danger, allowing a low cross from Gouffran to be played beyond Gazzaniga and into the path of Remy, but Chambers is there to deny the French hitman on the line!
Southampton are beginning to contain Newcastle in the middle of the park, with Ward-Prowse constantly dropping into pockets of space to support the deep-lying pairing of Davis and Cork. A lobbed pass is played into the box, which the Northern Irishman flicks on for Osvaldo, but the striker cannot read his team-mate in time.
Ward-Prowse displays neat footwork near the touchline to outwit Tiote and forces Sissoko into making a clear foul.
The ball is pinged about to and fro around the centre-circle as neither team can hold onto possession at present.
Ameobi tests the credentials of Chambers on the opposing flank, but the young, replacement full-back is no fool. However, Newcastle come close from the resulting corner as Debuchy smashes a half-volley on the edge of the box just wide!
The Magpies gain another corner in quick succession, this time via Debuchy on the right, but the referee penalises Gouffran for infringement. The visitors take the free kick in their own area.
Southampton get the match kicked off, going from right to left.
The players are out on the pitch. Let battle commence!
Both sides have experienced contrasting fortunes of late - Alan Pardew's men have climbed to sixth position in the Premier League thanks to an impressive run of five wins in their last six matches. However, the South Coast outfit ended a sequence of three straight defeats last week, drawing 1-1 with Manchester City.
Newcastle's only absentee comes in the form of playmaker Yohan Cabaye who has been handed a one-match ban for accumulating five yellow cards. Southampton, meanwhile, have been dealt a blow with the news that lynchpin Morgan Schneiderlin has joined Victor Wanyama, Artur Boruc, Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Fox and Kelvin Davis on the treatment table due to a pelvic injury.
Last but not least, we have the Saints: Gazzaniga; Chambers, Lovren, Hooiveld, Shaw; Cork, Davis, Ward-Prowse; Rodriguez, Lambert; Osvaldo.
Here's how the Magpies will look this afternoon: Krul; Debuchy, Williamson, Coloccini, Santon; Tiote, Sissoko, Anita; Gouffran, S Ameobi, Remy.
