Newcastle - Manchester City Preview: Champions look to bounce back after derby heartache

Roberto Mancini's side will want to get back to winning ways after their first defeat of the season, while the hosts aim to end a run of five losses in their last six league games

  Manchester City

Tevez, Silva, Milner

Alan Pardew could be without influential midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring), after he suffered a reaction after coming back from his injury in the defeat at Fulham.

Steven Taylor (hamstring) and Yohan Cabaye remain sidelined for the Magpies but winger Gabriel Obertan (toe) could return following a month out.

Vincent Kompany (groin) has missed training after limping out of last week's Manchester derby and is likely to miss the trip to St James' Park, while James Milner may return from a hamstring injury.

Gareth Barry will definitely be missing though, the England midfielder will serve a one-match ban for abusive and/or insulting language towards a match official during the Manchester derby.

Jack Rodwell (hamstring) is regaining fitness but Micah Richards (ankle) admitted this week he does not expect to return until February.

  • Newcastle have 10 points fewer than they did at this point last season.
  • Dan Gosling has scored in both of his Premier League appearances against Manchester City.

  • Manchester City have scored six goals in their last five Premier League away matches and four of those have been netted by substitutes.

  • City are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League away games and have kept five clean sheets in that run
  • Manchester City have won nine, lost none and drawn two of their last 11 Premier League games against Newcastle.

With five goals in his last six home league games, Demba Ba has provided the goals to keep the Magpies going so far this season. With strike partner Papiss Cisse out of sorts and Ben Arfa on the sidelines, Alan Pardew will again need the Senegal forward to be on top form if he hopes to get anything out of the match.

The Argentine came off the bench to make a real impact in the Manchester derby last weekend and will hope to be rewarded with a place in the starting line-up on Saturday. He has yet to hit a consistent run of form this season but the champions have looked lively with Tevez paired with Sergio Aguero in attack.
After hugely successful campaigns last season, neither side looks like it will match those achievements half-way through this term. Newcastle have been a shadow of the side that stormed into fifth place last season and could come up against a rampant Manchester City side, eager to put things right after a painful derby defeat last weekend.
