Serie A Preview: Napoli - Parma

Serie A Preview: Napoli - Parma

The Neapolitans need to forget Thursday night's collapse against Liverpool and turn their focus on the league...

Recovering From European Shock

Napoli’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Europa League on Thursday night was nothing if not dramatic. 1-0 up until the 75th minute, the Italians collapsed thereafter with Steven Gerrard scoring a heroic hat-trick.

Napoli are still in with a chance of progressing to the next round but the defeat at Anfield must have taught them to maintain focus throughout the 90 minutes. The Azzurri will be looking to do just that when they host Parma in Naples on Sunday.

At the moment Walter Mazzarri’s side are level on points with Juventus and just two behind third-placed Milan. However, the former Italian champions have struggled at home, having lost twice already in the league.

Signs Of Improvement

Parma are moving forward with the pace of a tortoise perhaps but they are moving forward nevertheless. Three draws in a row in the league have pushed the Ducali above the relegation zone.

However, the danger is far from over yet for a side that are showing signs of struggling from the ‘second season syndrome’ as they are level on points with third-from-bottom Cesena. Pasquale Marino’s side need to start winning again and perhaps three successive draws have given them a platform to do just that.

But Parma have yet to win away from home in the league this season and have conceded six goals in four games on their travels. Even though Napoli have looked troubled in Naples, Parma must be aware to improve their own away record in order to register a victory against the Neapolitans.

Lavezzi scored a brilliant goal against Liverpool on Thursday evening and that was the Argentine’s third goal in his last three matches in all competitions. Lavezzi has looked very good in recent weeks and the highly rated striker will be crucial in Napoli finding the target against Parma on Sunday.

Napoli’s defence has shown susceptibility from time to time and after their second-half collapse at Anfield, Parma’s Giovinco will be relishing the chance to damage them even more. The former Juventus playmaker will start on the right of a three-man attacking trident and he will be crucial in creating chances for their centre-forward Bojinov.
