Moldova 0-1 Netherlands: Huntelaar The Hero For Disappointing Oranje

Moldova were never really able to trouble Oranje and the Dutch picked up a narrow 1-0 win courtesy of a Klaas-Jan Huntelaar strike...

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar once again proved his class by helping Netherlands to a narrow away win against Moldova. The Schalke striker slotted home in the 37th minute after being set up by playmaker Rafael van der Vaart. Moldova lacked the quality to cause the Dutch defence any serious trouble and had to settle for a 1-0 loss.

Netherlands started the match with attacking intentions and got the first chances of the encounter after about fifteen minutes. Wesley Sneijder found Huntelaar on the edge of the area and the Schalke striker went by his marker before firing straight at the shot stopper. Huntelaar got another chance from the following corner, but he aimed too high and the chance went begging.

Huntelaar continued to be his side's danger-man and the prolific hitman was rewarded for his efforts in the 37th minute. Rafael van der Vaart set up Huntelaar with an intelligent through pass and the striker slotted home with a low shot in the far post. The former Milan star came close to doubling Oranje's lead in the dying seconds of the game, but he only hit the side-netting.

The home side were unable to trouble Maarten Stekelenburg and were only able to test the Dutch goalie once. However, Anatoliy Doros' left footed shot from a narrow angle went high and wide without worrying Stekelenburg.

Oranje continued to dominate play after the break and they came close to making it two in the 50th minute after a good attack. Gregory van der Wiel reached Dirk Kuyt down the right wing and the Liverpool star set up Sneijder on the edge of the box. The attacking midfielder tried his luck with a placed shot, but Moldova goalie Sergiu Namasco pulled off a great save to deny the Inter midfielder.

Kuyt and Huntelaar also got chances to give the Dutch a more comfortable lead, but sloppy finishing kept the hosts alive until the final whistle. Moldova came close to levelling the score on only one occasion though around the hour mark. Eugeniu Cebotaru tested the Dutch goalie with a header after a corner kick, but Stekelenburg made an easy save to keep a clean sheet.

Netherlands sit first in the table following Friday's results. The Dutch have collected nine points from three games and Bert van Marwijk's men will be looking to hold on to their perfect score when they take on Sweden on Tuesday.

Moldova remain in fourth position and have now scooped up three points from three games. They travel to San Marino on Tuesday in an attempt to pick up their second win of the qualifying campaign.
