E. van der Sar
Had to be surprisingly alert to deny N’Zogbia and Gomez as Wigan pushed for a goal. Much busier afternoon than he would have expected.
Seemed to lack pace in face of Rodallega’s threat on counter attack. Possibly carried knock from England duty.
A real nuisance in front of goal for Wigan. Continued to win header after header in the Latics area. Not as assured when asked to defend and struggled to keep a lid on Rodallega. Slack clearance in opening minutes was blasted over by Gomez after scramble.
Was the unlikely man to add cheer from a first half full of frustration for United when he headed home in injury time. Took advantage of lax Wigan defending.
The Scotland captain was surprisingly subdued. Failed to get in face of Gomez and often bullied off ball by Diame and Thomas.
The Korean tried to spark something for United and his deep centre found the unmarked Evra to fire ahead. Probed Wigan defence well. Removed for Scholes.
Not at his best. The increasingly influential Portuguese played on the cusp of the game. Erratic set-piece delivery occasionally found Vidic in space.
Turgid stuff from the England man. Control was poor and slow to move ball. Crowd soon got on his back. Sacrificed for Hernandez.
Frenchman looked out of his depth in front of expectant Old Trafford. Dribbled well only to ungainly stumble over ball at last moment. Lacked bottle for first team on this performance.
The young striker was starved of chances as he ploughed a lone furrow up top. Narrowly caught offside in 15th minute. Taken off for comeback man Rooney.
Ali Al Habsi
Bolton Wanderers loanee had to be alert to deny Vidic but few questions were asked of him in first half. Let down badly by defence for Evra opener but added to burgeoning reputation in second with several smart saves.
Critically static, along with Stam, as Evra headed United into the lead. For a man of his experience, should have done better.
Had an ongoing battle with Nani that threatened to spill over in first half. Did a job on winger and kept him out of the match. Solid stuff.
The stand-in skipper lost his head and was the first Wigan man to see red when given his second caution before hour mark. Had earlier effectively kept lid on Macheda.
Pushed up into midfield to add steel to the opposition. Plan fell apart when he didn’t track Evra from deep and the full-back nodded home. Was otherwise assured on the ball. Substituted for McArthur.
Tried to get in face of Park but gave away a number of free-kicks. Not a natural full-back.
Sat at base of Wigan midfield and made a nuisance of himself. Unsettled Fletcher and Carrick. Did excellent job of winning the ball and disrupting play before sending’s off.
Full of invention and speed but lost individual battle with Rafael. Usually first on scene to support Rodallega. Taken off for Di Santo.
Spaniard wasted a glorious opportunity to give Wigan an early lead when, after a scramble, he fired over the bar. Tried to get foot on ball and lofted several clever passes to put Rodallega behind defence. Lacked pace and nous to support Colombian, however. Hooked for Moses.
Teamed up with Thomas to stifle United midfield. Drifted across well to help out Figueroa with Nani. Understandably stretched after 60 minutes. Booked.
The Colombian caused problems for Vidic and Ferdinand despite his deployment as a lone striker. Undid all good work with wild two-footed lunge on Rafael and was sent off.

Allowed United to gain foothold in match in 55th minute. Kept side ticking over and given all time in world after dismissals.
Old Trafford exile came to end in 55th minute. Appearance met in majority by cheers. Forced save from Al Habsi in 70th minute with header. Still long way from electrifying best.
Brought on in 64th minute for dire Carrick. Swooped low to head United into two-goal lead.
- 12 M. Pollitt
- 8 B. Watson
Thrown on in 57th minute with Wigan very much in game. Two wild challenges later from team-mates and the attacker had no chance of making his mark.
- 38 C. McManaman
Young Scot was given last 10 minutes to impress. Starved of ball.
- 9 M. Boselli
F. Di Santo
Ex-Chelsea striker was introduced alongside McArthur in vain hope of getting goal in 80th minute. Match passed him by.
