Manchester United take a break from Premier League action when they host Swansea in the FA Cup at the weekend while Spurs make the short journey across North London to face arch-rivals Arsenal. Thanks for joining me, Max Bentley, on a thrilling first day of football in 2014. I'll be back for more commentary soon, goodbye!
So, Manchester United start the New Year with a defeat and with the transfer window having opened earlier today, I would be very surprised if David Moyes did not dip into the market. It was quite alarming that, at times, they looked to their 18-year-old prodigy Adnan Januzaj to make the difference.
Tottenham have now picked up ten points in Tim Sherwood's first four league games in charge and that result means that they leapfrog Manchester United into sixth place, eight points off fierce rivals Arsenal.
FT: Manchester United 1-2 Tottenham. David Moyes' side suffer a fourth home league defeat of the season courtesy of two headers from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen. Danny Welbeck pulled one back for the hosts but it was not enough as they fall eleven points off leaders Arsenal. Is their title defence over? I certainly think so.
Howard Webb blows the final whistle! Tottenham Hotspur win at Old Trafford for the second successive season, what a start to the Tim Sherwood era!
90' + 4'
Manchester United bombard the Tottenham box with a series of crosses but Hernandez cannot divert Valencia's cross beyond Lloris and the France goalkeeper claims, much to the delight of the travelling supporters. Is there one last chance for Manchester United?
90' + 2'
VIDIC TWICE GOES CLOSE! The Serbian centre-back forces Lloris into a fine low save down to his right when he connects with Rooney's corner before missing a golden opportunity when he powers another header over the crossbar from close range. David Moyes is staring another home league defeat in the face.
GOOD SAVE FROM LLORIS! Rooney has been a peripheral figure in this game but he latches onto Januzaj's jinking run on the edge of the box before his curling effort is palmed behind by the Tottenham goalkeeper.
Yellow Card Adnan Januzaj
Manchester United continue to pour forward but they cannot find a way past the Tottenham defence. Adnan Januzaj picks up a booking for simulation.
The Manchester United fans scream for a penalty as Young latches onto Welbeck's flick-on before going down under a challenge from the onrushing Lloris. The winger managed to get his cross into the box but the referee waves away the appeals and Tottenham survive the danger. David Moyes looks furious on the touchline.
Manchester United effectively have four defenders and six attackers on the field now as Ashley Young replaces Tom Cleverley. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
LENNON NEARLY SEALS THE WIN! The nippy winger has been a constant thorn in the Manchester United defence and he jinks beyond Evra and then Valencia before his low drive is well held by De Gea.
Tottenham have hardly mustered a shot on De Gea's goal since Eriksen's second but they go close to wrapping up the points when Dembele bursts away from two red shirts before his fierce drive is well blocked by Valencia. Eight minutes remaining at Old Trafford.
Yellow Card Mousa Dembele
Moussa Dembele picks up the first Tottenham booking of the game as he prevents Cleverley from launching a Manchester United counter attack. It's all hands to the pump for Spurs at the moment.
Januzaj has finally sprung to life in this game and he gets past Rose down the right before his low cross is backheeled towards goal by Hernandez, drawing Lloris into a smart reflex save. Welbeck then goes down as he attempts to turn in the rebound but the referee waves away the penalty appeals.
Chiriches has enjoyed a marvellous game in the heart of the Tottenham defence and he shadows Kagawa excellently to prevent the Japanese playmaker from getting his cross into the box. Tottenham have under 15 minutes to hang on to a crucial three points.
Tim Sherwood has promised to give Tottenham's youngsters a chance and he introduces young striker Harry Kane in place of Roberto Soldado. The 20-year-old scored in the Capital One Cup for Spurs earlier this season.
It's all Manchester United at the moment and Hernandez exchanges neat passes with Welbeck inside the box but the Mexican loses control of the ball at the last moment. Can the English champions find an equaliser?
SO CLOSE FROM JANUZAJ! Manchester United have renewed hope now and their young prodigy comes within inches of equalising when he bends a left-footed shot inches past the far post. That goal has woken up the Old Trafford crowd.
There is another blow for Tottenham here as Emmanuel Adebayor is stretchered off and he is replaced by Nacer Chadli. How will Spurs cope without their influential Togolese forward?
Remember that Manchester United overturned a two-goal Tottenham lead to snatch a point at White Hart Lane a month ago. Can they do the same again today?
Assist Adnan Januzaj
Goal Danny Welbeck
WELBECK MAKES IT 2-1! Manchester United respond immediately as Januzaj's cute slide pass picks out the run of Welbeck and he bursts beyond the Tottenham defence to dink a wonderful chip over the advancing Lloris. The comeback is on!
Goal Christian Eriksen
ERIKSEN MAKES IT 2-0! It's a superb counter attack from Tottenham as Soldado releases Lennon down the right. The pacey winger's low cross deflects off the body of Vidic and Eriksen swoops in ahead of Valencia to nod beyond De Gea. Are all three points heading to White Hart Lane?
Tottenham make their first change of the game as the 19-year-old French midfielder Nabil Bentaleb comes on for Etienne Capoue. Can the youngster shine at the Theatre of Dreams?
Adnan Januzaj has failed to show his potential this evening and his tame effort is easily held by Lloris as he attempts to catch out the goalkeeper at his near post. Tim Sherwood is preparing his first substitution on the touchline.
Incidentally, Javier Hernandez is on a barren streak, having not found the net in his previous nine matches. I wonder whether he will push for a move away from Old Trafford in the newly-opened transfer window.
Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez
David Moyes decides to make a double attacking substitution as Javier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa replace Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling. Antonio Valencia switches to right-back.
PENALTY APPEAL TURNED DOWN FOR MANCHESTER UNITED! Danny Welbeck is fortunate to escape a booking when he throws himself over Chiriches' leg after dribbling his way into the penalty area. Howard Webb waves away the appeals but decides not to brandish a card.
Chiriches has hardly put a foot wrong for Tottenham so far and he tracks Welbeck's run excellently to prevent the England striker latching onto Valencia's pass. Is this really the same defence which conceded five at Liverpool and six at Manchester City?
It's been a slow start to the second half with both sides struggling to fashion openings. David Moyes has clearly seen enough and he readies Shinji Kagawa on the touchline.
Tottenham are working so hard when they don't have the ball and they are not allowing Manchester United to settle in possession. Adebayor's work rate has been particularly impressive up front.
As things stand, Manchester United will be eleven points behind leaders Arsenal. Can they break down the resilient Tottenham backline which boasts the second-best defensive record in the Premier League?
GOOD CHANCE FOR WELBECK! Carrick opens up his former side with a cushioned lobbed pass over the Tottenham defence but Welbeck cannot generate enough power behind his volley and Lloris comfortably gathers.
Manchester United enjoy a sustained spell of pressure at the beginning of the second half without really testing the Tottenham defence. David Moyes will be praying that Robin Van Persie can recover quickly from his injury.
The two sides re-emerge from the tunnel for the second half and there have been no substitutions from either side. Can Manchester United avoid a fourth home league defeat?
MATCH FACT: Emmanuel Adebayor has now scored 25 league goals for Tottenham. That 34th-minute strike was the fourth scored with his head.
HT: Manchester United 0-1 Tottenham. Tim Sherwood's faith in Emmanuel Adebayor looks to pay dividends again as the Togo striker's header gives Spurs a slender advantage at the break. Manchester United have looked good in parts but they have struggled to get Wayne Rooney involved. Big half-time team talk ahead for David Moyes.
Chris Smalling nervously shuffles the ball behind for a corner under no pressure from a Tottenham player, much to the frustration of the home crowd. Fortunately for the right-back however, Rooney is back to head Eriksen's corner to safety.
Danny Welbeck attempts to replicate Wayne Rooney's spectacular bicycle kick against Manchester City when he meets Valencia's cross from the right. However, the in-form striker cannot divert his effort towards goal and another Manchester United attack breaks down.
Manchester United have looked dangerous down the wings but there is little penetration through the middle of the park. Surely David Moyes will be given the funds for a more incisive central midfielder in the newly-opened transfer window?
Yellow Card Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney picks up the first booking of the game after tussling unfairly with Dembele. The England striker is looking a little frustrated with his team's performance so far.
WHAT A CHANCE TO MAKE IT 2-0! Lennon has been short of fitness this season but he skips away from Evra down the right before sending a dangerous low cross towards Soldado at the back post. The Spanish striker manages to get in behind Vidic but he can only turn the ball over the bar on the slide.
Valencia has been a threat down the right for Manchester United in this first half and he fizzes a teasing cross into the box which Dawson does brilliantly to head away from the onrushing Januzaj. Can Manchester United find the equaliser?
MATCH STAT: Tottenham have not lost a league game this season where they have taken the lead.
Assist Christian Eriksen
Goal Emmanuel Adebayor
ADEBAYOR GIVES TOTTENHAM THE LEAD! Eriksen is the architect as he bursts down the right wing before standing up a cross towards the back post which Adebayor connects with, sending a brilliant header back across goal and into the bottom corner. David De Gea was motionless. That's his fourth goal of the season.
ADEBAYOR GOES CLOSE! The Togo striker has scored a number of fine volleys during his career and he latches onto a bouncing ball outside the box before sending a dipping half-volley narrowly wide of the top right-hand corner. If he can continue his recent goalscoring form, he could prove to be a key member of this Spurs side in the second half of the season.
Januzaj will be hoping to make an impression on his return to the side but he cannot get the better of Chiriches as the Romanian defender reads his attempted skill excellently to steal away possession. The Manchester United attack has gone a little flat in the past ten minutes or so.
Tottenham have settled into this game now after that early Manchester United pressure and Dembele takes a timeout to readjust his boots. Will we see a goal before the half-time whistle?
Valencia is proving a particular menace down the right for Manchester United and the Ecuadorian winger once again gets in behind Rose before his teasing cross is well headed clear by Dawson.
Roberto Soldado has been much-criticised in his early Tottenham career but he has looked bright so far and on this occasion, he seizes upon a loose ball on the right corner of the box before seeing his drilled effort well blocked.
VIDIC GOES CLOSE! The Serbian defender rises above Dawson to meet Januzaj's inswinging corner from the right but his header flashes narrowly past the post.
Valencia produces a brilliant piece of skill to evade Rose down the right before his low cross is hacked clear at the near post by Dawson, denying the lurking Rooney in the middle.
Antonio Valencia will be hoping for a better season in 2014 and he collects a pass on the right corner of the box before his arrowed drive is well blocked by Rose. It's been a high tempo start to the game at Old Trafford.
Tottenham are slowly growing into this game now and Capoue finds space on the edge of the box before ballooning an effort high over the crossbar.
WHAT A CHANCE FOR TOTTENHAM! The visitors create their first opening of the game as Soldado threads a wonderful ball through Evans' legs for Lennon to latch onto. The England winger is in behind Evra and clean through but can only fire straight at the legs of De Gea. He must do better there.
Tottenham are yet to fashion an attack on the Manchester United goal as the hosts dominate the early stages. However, it is important to note that only Arsenal have a better away record in the Premier League this season that their North London rivals.
Incidentally, Wayne Rooney is bidding to become only the second player, after Frank Lampard, to notch ten league goals in ten consecutive Premier League seasons.
Manchester United are pressing Tottenham high up the pitch and Evans wins a free kick on the edge of the box when he is tripped by Capoue. Rooney steps up to take it but he can only curl his effort high over the bar.
Michael Dawson receives treatment for an injury which he appeared to sustain when chasing Welbeck in that earlier Manchester United attack. With Vertonghen and Kaboul already sidelined, another defensive injury is the last thing that Sherwood needs.
SMALLING GOES CLOSE! The England defender storms forward from right-back, collecting a pass from Valencia and firing a shot towards goal at the near post. However, once again Lloris is there as he gets just enough on the ball to turn it around the post with his legs.
CHANCE FOR MANCHESTER UNITED! Danny Welbeck's pace is causing Tottenham all sorts of problems early on and he peels off of Dawson to latch onto Valencia's long ball before he is denied by the onrushing Lloris. The France No.1 has been busy in the opening exchanges.
It's Manchester United who are forcing the early pressure here and Cleverley attempts to poke a pass through for Welbeck but there is a lack of communication as the ball rolls through the legs of the England international.
Manchester United steal possession early on and Lloris needs to be alert to rush off his line and prevent Welbeck from snatching a goal after 37 seconds. Tottenham nearly suffered the same fate as they did at the Etihad there.
Howard Webb blows his whistle and Tottenham, in their traditional white jerseys, get the game underway. Can Tim Sherwood continue his unbeaten league start as manager?
The two sides emerge from the tunnel with captains Nemanja Vidic and Michael Dawson beginning the respective handshakes. Today's referee is Howard Webb.
MATCH FACT: Tottenham failed to defeat Manchester United in 26 meetings in all competitions in a frustrating run that spanned almost 14 years. However, that ended in September last year, as goals from Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey helped them to a 3-2 success at Old Trafford - their first since 1989.
Manchester United and Tottenham are tied on 34 points, eleven points off Premier League leaders Arsenal who won 2-0 at home to Cardiff earlier. There are a valuable three points on offer today as Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool all secured wins. Who can keep their title hopes alive? Kick-off is under ten minutes away.
TOTTENHAM (4-4-2): Lloris; Walker, Chiriches, Dawson, Rose; Lennon, Capoue, Dembele, Eriksen; Adebayor, Soldado.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-4-2): De Gea; Smalling, Evans, Vidic, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Januzaj; Rooney, Welbeck.
TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS: Kyle Walker and Danny Rose return to fill the respective full-back roles with Etienne Capoue starting in the centre of midfield. Emmanuel Adebayor will hope to continue his goalscoring form as he partners Roberto Soldado up front.
MANCHESTER UNITED TEAM NEWS: Wayne Rooney, Antonio Valencia, Adnan Januzaj and Danny Welbeck are all recalled to the starting eleven after the 1-0 win at Norwich.
I'm Max Bentley and I'll be leading you through the proceedings from Old Trafford. These two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw when they met at White Hart Lane exactly a month ago. Wayne Rooney was the hero for Manchester United that day as he dragged his side back from two goals down and the England striker has recovered from injury to start again today.
Hello and welcome to the live coverage of the standout tie of New Year's Day as Manchester United host Tottenham Hotspur, with both sides looking to get 2014 off to the perfect start. David Moyes' men have racked up four consecutive league wins to reignite their fading title challenge while Tottenham have started life under Tim Sherwood brightly with seven points from his first three league games in charge.
