E. van der Sar
Little to do but solid handling to keep out a couple of long range potshots from the visitors.
A typically energetic performance from the French left-back, who bombed on in the first half and then stayed more disciplined as United saw the game out to secure all three points.
United are top of the Premier League largely thanks to their excellent defence and Vidic was once again a rock at the back, denying the dangerous Gyan and Bent any space and swatting them aside in physical combat.
Classy performance once again from the England captain, who snuffed out Sunderland's attacking threat and seems to have an almost perfect partnership with Vidic.
Rolled back the years with some driving runs to remind us what he was like at his swashbuckling best. Skill and vision started the move for the first goal as he was given far too much space to pick his passes. Went straight down the touchline after being substituted, which suggests he is still carrying a slight injury.
Probably in the best form of his United career and showed why with an ebullient performance, everything done with a swagger. Almost scored what would have been his third goal for the Red Devils but his effort from the edge of the penalty area smashed against the crossbar. Lovely pass set up Berbatov for the second goal. Appeared unhappy with Ferguson and Mike Phelan when he was substituted.
Brimming with confidence at the moment but played more of a supporting role as he put in the work to allow the likes of Berbatov and Rooney to express themselves.
His importance to United may not be immediately obvious but he played a vital role here with important interceptions and quick passing before the Sunderland players could re-organise defensively.
Two more for the Bulgarian striker as he continues to leave Rooney in his wake as far as scoring goes. The first was a simple header, the second via a massive deflection off Anton Ferdinand, but it's going his way at the moment. Also smashed a shot onto the post and saw another effort hit the side-netting as he was given far too much time and space by the Sunderland defenders.
Again looked sharp as he ran Sunderland defenders out of position and produced some telling final deliveries. Assist for Berbatov's opener with a pinpoint cross and nearly scored with a wonderful chip. Still appears to be a little bit anxious in the penalty area and snatched at a couple of shots.
Nothing he could do about either goal as his defenders went missing but produced an excellent stop to deny Anderson.
For the second year in a row saw the ball deflect off him and into the net at the Stretford End. Like Onuoha, spent far too much time backing off the United players, especially in the first half.
Off the pace and it showed as he was booked for a lunge on Berbatov when he had no idea where the ball had gone. Worked hard but found it difficult on the left as opposed to his favoured right side.
Equally to blame for Berbatov's opener and stood off the United midfielders too much when they broke forward. Improved in the second half as he got tighter to Rooney.
Struggled to get a grip on Anderson's powerful running in the first half. Tidy on the ball but United were allowed to bulldoze their way through the Black Cats far too easily.
The United target is clearly one of Sunderland's better players and very composed on the ball, but he was caught out far too many times defensively as he lost runners and missed tackles.
Showed his experience with some tactically astute interceptions but didn't see enough of the ball. Tested Van der Sar with a powerful effort from long range.
Drifted infield in search of the ball but the consequence was that the hosts could always get the ball out wide. Lacked the killer ball when he had opportunities to play in Bent and was replaced by Cook eight minutes from time.
Ahmed El Mohamady
Played out of position at right-back and looked awkward from the outset as he was unsure what to do about Giggs' roaming runs. Missing in action for the first goal as Berbatov was allowed a free header.
Worked hard for the visitors, mainly ploughing a lone furrow, but got little change from Ferdinand and Vidic. The Ghanaian had one half chance just after the break but blasted his volley over the bar from a tight angle.
Sunderland's main marksman didn't seem to know where he was supposed to be in the first half as he moved between left midfield and striker. Did very little on the ball as he waited for a chance that never came before he was replaced by Meyler in the 69th minute.
- 29 T. Kuszczak
- 12 C. Smalling
- 2 G. Neville
Solid job after replacing Anderson in the 63rd minute and tested Gordon with a shot from inside the penalty area.
- 33 Bebé
Replaced Giggs in the 63rd minute. Worked hard but was not on the same wavelength as Berbatov and Rooney.
Came on for Berbatov eight minutes from time but had little involvement.
- 22 S. Mignolet
Replaced Zenden two minutes from time.
- 34 B. Adams
- 37 A. Reed
Replaced Bent in the 69th minute and only action of note was a dangerous, studs up challenge on Rafael for which he was lucky to escape with only a booking.
Given a run out for the last eight minutes after replacing Malbranque but the game had already died out.
