Real Madrid win Aggregate 3 - 2
L. Modrić 66'
Cristiano Ronaldo 69'
That's all from me for tonight guys! Thanks for joining me for what was a thoroughly entertaining game at Old Trafford. Stay with Goal.com for all the match reaction following Madrid's win. I daresay Ferguson may have a thing or two to say following that red card... Good night!
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-2 REAL MADRID (AGG 2-3) Ferguson will be furious with the referee Cuneyt Cakir after he showed Nani a straight red card for a high foot in the second half. United were leading up until that point following Ramos' own goal, but after going down to 10 men conceded twice in quick succession to strikes from Modric and then Ronaldo. Madrid win 3-2 on aggregate and progress to the quarter-finals.
90' + 5'
THAT'S IT!! IT'S ALL OVER HERE!! MADRID ARE THROUGH!!
90' + 4'
Los Blancos play the set piece short and keep the ball for a few valuable seconds before Ferdinand moves across and tackles Ronaldo.
90' + 3'
Ronaldo forces de Gea into making a smart block up the other end after hitting an opportunistic effort at goal from a tight angle. Corner to Madrid. Time is running out for United...
90' + 2'
ANOTHER STOP FROM LOPEZ!! The Madrid goalkeeper thwarts United again! Vidic's header from Young's corner looks destined for the back of the net but Lopez has other ideas as he throws his body to the left to make the save.
90' + 1'
Young wins a corner for United on the right...
The fourth official signals for five minutes of added time! *Insert Fergie-time gag*
KAKA HITS THE POST!! Madrid come close to scoring a third as the former Milan man cuts in from the left and curls a shot at goal that takes a deflection off Vidic and flicks on to the post. Nearly 3-1!
Yellow Card Pepe
Vital touch from Varane!! A cross from the right looks destined for the right boot of van Persie who is swivelling in preparation on the edge of the penalty area but Madrid's centre-back gets a toe to the ball just before van Persie can make contact.
Rafael is hobbling for United. The Brazilian has put in a colossal effort this evening for his side, and it appears to be physically catching up with him in the later stages here.
ROONEY HOOKS A SHOT OVER!! The ball falls nicely to the United forward inside the box but he cannot get over it enough to send an effort on target and he slices the ball off target under pressure from Coentrao.
GREAT SAVE FROM LOPEZ!! Young plays the corner short to Giggs who curls a cross to the near post where it is met by the head of Carrick. The Madrid goalkeeper is equal to it though as he pushes the ball away from under his crossbar.
United have a corner on the left...
Again United scream at the referee for a penalty and again he ignores their efforts. Welbeck's shot was blocked by Ramos on this occasion, with the home team thinking it struck his arm when it looked to me as it hit him square in the stomach.
Madrid are enjoying an extended period of possesion in United's half at the moment, as Modric, Alonso and Kaka exchange a series of quick, short passes.
Modric has been impressive since coming on for Madrid. Not only did he score the first goal for the visitors, he has also kept the ball very well in midfield.
STAT: Madrid have made more than twice as many passes as United tonight. 450-219.
Ferguson is urging his team forward on the touchline, they desperately need a goal here, otherwise they are out.
Welbeck wants a penalty after going down under a challenge from Ramos but the referee again disagrees and tells United to get on with things.
STAT: Higuain has not scored in the Champions League this season, but he has a vital assist tonight for that second Madrid goal.
Yellow Card Kaká
Both sides make a substitution as Ozil is withdrawn by Mourinho and replaced by Pepe, while Wayne Rooney comes on for Cleverley for the home side.
Yellow Card Michael Carrick
Carrick is booked for dissent by the referee as United protest following what looked like a handball from Khedira inside the Madrid box. The official gave nothing though.
How quickly the dynamics of this game have changed! Madrid have gone from a goal down to a goal up in the space of four hectic minutes.
Assist Gonzalo Higuaín
Goal C. Ronaldo
MADRID LEAD 2-1!! RONALDO SCORES FOR THE AWAY SIDE!! A neat passing move involving Ozil and Higuain finishes with the Argentine driving a cross to Ronaldo at the back post. Unlike a few minutes ago there is a Madrid player to convert Higuain's pass, as their Portuguese attacker taps the ball into the back of the net from close range.
Assist Sergio Ramos
Goal Luka Modric
WHAT A GOAL FROM MODRIC!! THE MADRID SUB HAS EQUALISED!! The Croatian hammers a fabulous strike past de Gea and in off the post from 20 yards to draw his side level. That was a superb effort from the former Tottenham man.
This is what the Champions League is all about! Such drama.
I've got another brilliant update from Greg Stobart at Old Trafford: "Unbelievable noise here. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anything like it. Sir Alex Ferguson is absolutely furious with that red card shown to Nani and is on the touchline whipping up the crowd in between expletive-laden tirades towards the fourth official. What a test of character this is now for United."
LOPEZ SAVES FROM VAN PERSIE!! The Madrid goalkeeper gets down well to his left to keep van Persie's driven shot out after the Dutchman had evaded the attentions of Varane to get a shot away.
VARANE'S HEADER IS CLEARED OFF THE LINE BY THE ARM OF RAFAEL!! The Frenchman nods an effort towards goal that United's young right-back blocks from going in with his arm! Mourinho is seething on the touchline. Both managers are far from happy right now.
Talk about a shift of momentum! Madrid are surging forward here at Old Trafford.
I think the referee knows he made what could be a huge mistake there! Madrid should have a definite free kick on the left for a foul on Ronaldo but the man in blue waves play on...
Madrid make a second change as Luka Modric, a one-time United target, replaces Arbeloa. That is an attacking switch from Mourinho.
As Ferguson fumes on the touchline play continues on the pitch. Ozil sends the free kick into the box from the right but no Madrid player can get on the end of it and it is headed away by Cleverley.
Red Card Nani
NANI IS OFF!! THE UNITED MAN HAS BEEN GIVEN A RED CARD!! The Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir has shown the Portugal international a straight red after he caught Arbeloa with a high foot. Surely that was only a yellow?!
Carrick lifts an inviting ball over the Madrid defence for Welbeck to run on to, but Lopez is off his line quickly to hack the ball up field as the attacker sprints towards him.
Los Blancos have stepped it up a notch. Higuain has just whipped a fine cross into the box from the right but unfortunately for him none of his team-mates are anticipating the pass and the ball flies out for a goal kick to United.
Ozil curls the corner towards Varane on the penalty spot but he is beaten to the ball by Ferdinand who heads it away from danger.
Ronaldo thinks about shooting from 25 yards with his left foot but eventually decides against it. Instead he plays a neat one-two with Ozil which results in a corner for Madrid.
Madrid have got to push forward now. It will be interesting to see how long Mourinho leaves it before making changes if the score remains the same.
ADVANTAGE TO UNITED!! 2-1 they lead on aggregate now, with an away goal!
Own Goal Sergio Ramos
UNITED HAVE THE LEAD!! RAMOS PUTS THE BALL PAST HIS OWN KEEPER!! The Madrid centre-back deflects the ball past Lopez after Nani's driven cross from the left was flicked onwards by Welbeck. United had done brilliantly to work the ball into the box in the first place, with Rafael cutting in from the right and ghosting past a couple of challenges.
The home side don't make the most of the opportunity though and Madrid are able to break on the counter through Ronaldo. Some good positioning from Vidic stops that move on the edge of the United box.
United get the second period under way and quickly win a throw in high on the left-hand side...
Greg has certainly got a point there - Ronaldo has been quiet. After all the hype in the build-up to the game surrounding the Portugal international's return to Manchester, he hasn't done much. Go on Cristiano, make me look stupid by scoring a second half hat-trick.
Goal.com's Greg Stobart has pitched in with his half-time thoughts from Old Trafford: "So far, so good for Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have restricted Real Madrid to hardly any chances and have looked the more likely side to open the scoring. Cristiano Ronaldo received a hero’s welcome from all 76,000 supporters here but he had a very quiet 45 minutes as United sat deep and denied the Portuguese forward space in the final third."
STAT: United have managed only two clean sheets in their last 10 home Champions League games. Will they make that three clean sheets in 11 tonight? Let me know your thoughts on Twitter @charliefscott.
Madrid have dominated possession so far, despite United having looked the more likely team to take the lead. Los Merengues have had 64% of the ball compared with United's 36%.
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 REAL MADRID The sides go in at the break level here after an intense 45 minutes. United have done well to limit the threat of Madrid's potent attack, while also posing los Blancos' defence problems on occasion. Vidic came closest for the Red Devils as his header cannoned back off the post in the 21st minute, while Higuain had a goal chalked off for Madrid following a foul by Ramos in the build-up. Mourinho will be disappointed to see Di Maria come off injured late in the half, after the Argentine enjoyed a fantastic second half in the first leg at the Bernabeu.
45' + 1'
United waste a throw-in deep in Madrid's half in the final moments of the first period. And there is the half-time whistle!
Ángel Di María
The fourth official signals for just the one minute of added time at the end of the first half.
Madrid do make that change as Kaka replaces the injured Di Maria.
Some more insight from Greg Stobart: "The decibel level has not dropped since the players came out of the tunnel here and while Jose Mourinho tries to give his players instructions from the touchline, there is no way they will be able to hear him."
It looks like Kaka is being brought on by Madrid. Di Maria has just wandered down the tunnel after picking up a leg injury a few moments ago.
BRILLIANT FROM VARANE! The Madrid youngster shows his class again by dispossessing Welbeck with a measured sliding challenge on the edge of his own penalty area. It really is hard to believe he is only 19.
I've got some more colour from our man at the ground, Greg Stobart: "Sir Alex Ferguson will be very happy with the pattern of the game so far, with United trying to beat Real Madrid at their own game by inviting pressure from the visitors and looking to counter-attack. The problem is that one goal from the Spanish giants could change the complexion of the tie and would force a complete re-think for the United manager."
Yellow Card Arbeloa
Arbeloa is booked! The Madrid full-back loses the ball after a heavy touch and in his haste to get it back catches Evra with a high foot. He can have no complaints about that.
Rafael is tackled by Ramos on the opposite side and goes down appealing for a penalty. The referee is having none of it though, and tells the Brazilian full-back to get to his feet. Good decision from the official.
Elegant play from Varane! The 19-year-old Frenchman glides across to nick the ball from Nani as the United winger tries to drive into the Madrid box on the left-hand side.
LOPEZ MAKES TWO SAVES FOR MADRID!! Van Persie fires a shot at goal from a tight angle on the left that Lopez parries straight into the path of Welbeck. The English attacker hacks a shot at goal under pressure from Varane but Lopez is there again for Madrid to flick the ball over the crossbar and keep the score at 0-0.
MADRID HAVE SCOR..... It's been disallowed! Higuain has the ball in the net but the referee pulls play back for a Ramos foul on Vidic in the build-up. United are a bit lucky there!
Alvaro Arbeloa hugs the right touchline before swinging a cross into Higuain. The Argentine forward's first touch is glorious, but his second to drive the ball across goal is not quite right as Ferdinand flicks the ball out for a corner.
Ozil's corner is headed towards goal by Khedira but de Gea is able to make a comfortable catch under no pressure at all.
Di Maria gets the ball in space on the left and shapes to curl a cross into the area but he takes too long to make the pass as Rafael comes across to deflect the ball behind for a corner.
FANTASTIC BLOCK FROM VIDIC!! Ronaldo kills the ball dead with his left foot inside the United box but his driven low shot is blocked by the diving Serbia centre-back. That was fine defending from Vidic!
Ronaldo fires a shot in from 40 yards but Vidic's solid midriff is there to block the effort away from danger.
DECENT RECOVERY FROM RAMOS!! Welbeck looks to have got the wrong side of the Spain international as he races towards the Madrid goal but Ramos shows a good turn of speed to get back and block the 22-year-old's effort from 16 yards.
Silly foul from Khedira! The German midfielder gifts United a free kick as Madrid try and attack on the right by bundling into the back of Evra.
Vidic striking the post appears to have sparked Madrid to life here. They are showing a greater urgency now as they pass the ball around confidently just outside the United penalty area.
STAT: Jose Mourinho has never won a Champions League game at Old Trafford. Porto's progress in 2004 was built on a 1-1 draw while Inter lost 2-0 at United in 2008-09.
UNITED HIT THE POST!! Giggs' corner from the left is thumped onto the right-hand post by the head of Vidic and though the rebound fell to Welbeck his instinctive effort went straight to Diego Lopez, fortunately for the Madrid goalkeeper.
You can tell Giggs is enjoying himself tonight - he's just shown a rare burst of pace to dribble past Coentrao and win a corner.
Yellow Card Patrice Evra
Evra fouls Di Maria as the Argentine winger tries to glide past him on the right. The left-back is shown a yellow card by the referee for his troubles.
United are doing very well to hassle Madrid's players when they receive the ball in attacking areas at the moment. Cleverley in particular is putting in some vital challenges in midfield for the Red Devils.
STAT: Madrid are just shading possession so far, having had 58% to United's 42.
WONDERFUL CROSS FROM GIGGS!! The United veteran flicks a nonchalant cross to van Persie with the outside of his left foot from over on the right-hand side but his team-mate's volleyed effort at goal is blocked by Sergio Ramos.
United threaten down the left through Welbeck and Nani, and the latter of the two finds some space to dink the ball towards Robin van Persie at the back post. The flying Dutchman is unable to connect with the cross though as he is beaten in the air by Raphael Varane.
SMART PLAY FROM MADRID!! Mesut Ozil feeds the ball into Higuain on the edge of the United box but the Argentine cannot get his shot on target after pushing away from the challenge of Rio Ferdinand.
The 23-year-old gets up eventually and despite a few grimacing looks is able to continue here.
Tom Cleverley is down clutching his ankle inside the United half after a clash with Ronaldo.
Giggs tries to thread a pass through to Rafael as the Brazilian hurtles down the United right but the defender loses his footing which enables Coentrao to nip back and clear the ball up field.
Danny Welbeck is already having to track back for United. Every time Xabi Alonso gets the ball the England forward is upon him and on this occasion he fouls the former Liverpool midfielder and concedes a free kick.
STAT: Ryan Giggs is playing in his 134th Champions League game, with only the former Madrid forward Raul having played more (142).
Unsurprisingly Ronaldo is the man that takes the set piece for los Blancos but his effort fails to beat the wall and ricochets away to safety.
Fabio Coentrao pushes forward from left-back for Madrid and draws a foul from Ryan Giggs. Madrid now have a free kick 40 yards out, left of centre.
That's a wayward kick from David de Gea! The United goalkeeper hammers the ball into the stands under pressure from Gonzalo Higuain. The Spaniard looked a little nervous with his first touch of the game there.
A typically flash touch from Nani leads to nothing. The United winger flicks the ball through his legs but it goes straight to Sami Khedira.
Madrid start the game and immediately the ball is played to Ronaldo on the left. The Madeira-born attacker can't force his way past Rafael though, and United are able to steal the ball from their opponents.
As the teams make their way out on to the pitch, I've got some great insight from Goal.com's man at the game tonight, Greg Stobart. "Wonderful atmosphere building here at Old Trafford, with stars past and present here in the crowd from Diego Maradona to Gareth Bale. The United supporters and going to create a mosaic before kick-off while the Premier League side have wheeled out their big-game flag wavers around the perimeter of the pitch."
STAT: Ryan Giggs makes his 1000th professional appearance tonight. The Welshman's name was greeted with applause by the whole of Old Trafford a few minutes ago - even the Real Madrid fans joined in.
NO ROONEY FOR UNITED! The England international ran his little heart out in the first leg, but that wasn't enough to secure a starting place for this second leg. He is named on the bench tonight.
Subs: Adan, Albiol, Pepe, Kaka, Benzema, Modric, Callejon
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Lopez; Arbeloa, Varane, Ramos, Coentrao; Alonso, Khedira; Ronaldo, Ozil, Di Maria; Higuain
Subs: Lindegaard, Evans, Valencia, Young, Kagawa, Rooney, Chicharito
Manchester United (4-3-2-1): De Gea; Rafael, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra; Carrick, Cleverley, Giggs; Nani, Welbeck; Van Persie
Enough chit chat, how about some team news? SPOILER: Ferguson has left a huge name on the bench...
The Brazilian Ronaldo scored a marvellous hat-trick for Real Madrid against Manchester United a decade ago. Could we see Cristiano replicate that feat? Let me know your answer to that over on Twitter @charliefscott.
Any game that brings Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford has got my vote, particularly when he's managed by Jose Mourinho - the man who once slid across the turf on his knees at the Theatre of Dreams while in charge of Porto in 2004. The Portuguese coach has calmed down somewhat since then, and now enjoys a good relationship with the man in the opposite dugout this evening, Sir Alex Ferguson.
STAT: The two previous Champions League encounters between Manchester United and Real Madrid at Old Trafford have produced 12 goals.
To whet your appetite ahead of kick-off I've got one very juicy stat...
My name is Charlie Scott and I will be available throughout proceedings tonight over on Twitter @charliefscott. Feel free to send over your thoughts at any point, something you can also do using the comments box to the right of this LIVE commentary.
Good evening everyone and welcome to Goal.com's LIVE coverage of The Return of Ronaldo, or what others are billing Manchester United versus Real Madrid. The two European giants face one another at Old Trafford tonight in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash, with the first game having finished 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on February 13.
