Referee: A. Taylor

T. Cleverley 58'
P. Cissé 62'
Newcastle will be disappointed to have carved out so few clear-cut chances after Cisse's goal had got them back in the game. The Magpies looked a threat from setpieces, and Gosling missed several good chances, but on the balance of play they probably didn't do enough to deserve to draw or win the match.
Man Utd created a host of chances, and shoud have scored more than they did with Chicharito hitting the bar, Cleverley missing a first half sitter and Elliot making a string of good saves. The young side saw out the game with composure and intelligence, never allowing Newcastle to lay siege to their goal in search of an equaliser.
FULL TIME! Man Utd did just enough to qualify for the fourth round of the League Cup. Goals from Anderson and Cleverley gave the hosts a 2-0 lead, but Cisse's close range header resulted in a nervy finale for the Red Devils.
90' + 5'
There is a streaker on the pitch. Fergie is absolutely loving it. Pardew not so much.
90' + 4'
A Hail Mary pass reaches Williamson inside the box, but his header bounces tamely through to De Gea. That should be job done for Man Utd.
90' + 2'
No stoppage time chances to speak of for Newcastle so far. Man Utd have kept the ball well and denied the Magpies a chance to launch one big final assault.
Yellow CardGael Bigirimana
Newcastle can't get the ball. A swift Man Utd break is smartly slowed down by Anderson, allowing Man Utd to regroup and retain possession.
A high ball into the box is headed down by Ameobi. The ball lands at the feet of Gosling just inside the 6-yard box, who takes a touch, swivels and prods the ball at goal with the outside of his boot, but De Gea collects with ease.
Man Utd are doing a brilliant job of managing the clock and killing off the game.
OFF THE BAR! Cisse almost scores a wonderful overhead kick. The Newcastle forward chests the ball, knees it and then loops a bicycle kick over De Gea and onto the crossbar. So close!
Obertan beats Buttner down the right and whips in a dangerous cross, which Man Utd clear. The Frenchman hasn't attacked his fullback enough.
Nick Powell replaces Wayne Rooney, while Ryan Tunnicliffe is on for Vermijl. Tunnicliffe's father is set to pocket £10,000 having wagered a £100 bet that his son would one day play for Man Utd.
Cisse puts Keane under pressure, and the Man Utd centreback gifts the ball to Gosling. The Newcastle midfielder ambles forward and then fires a rasping, dipping shot at goal, but it just evades the top corner.
Newcastle continue to threaten from long throws and aerial balls, while Man Utd pose a significant threat on the break with the pace of Chicharito and Welbeck.
Tiote, who has been flagging in the second half, is replaced by Bigirimana, who gave a very promising performance against Maritimo last week.
Man Utd have responded to Newcastle's goal and are conceding less possession to the away team. A long range shot from Anderson is deflected for a corner which Newcastle fail to clear and Keane almost has a tap in, but Williamson boots the ball away.
OFF THE BAR!! Chicharito is played through on goal, rides a challenge and fires a shot at goal but it cannons back off the crossbar. What a chance! Newcastle race up the other end with Ferguson who plays in another excellent cross which de Gea just about deals with.
GOAL!! It's an instant impact from Cisse. Shane Ferguson, on as a substitute for Coloccini, bursts forward and plays a delicious cross right across the face of De Gea's goal. Cisse ghosts in at the far post and heads in from close range. Game on!
Vuckic, who has been quiet, is replaced by Cisse. Pardew's men need a goal, and the Senegalese striker can provide it. Coloccini is replaced with an hour of game time under his belt as he continues his recovery.
Yellow CardCheikh Tiote
GOAL!! There are cries of "shoot!" as Rooney picks up the ball on the edge of the box, he plays the ball out wide to Welbeck instead. Welbeck in turn feeds Cleverley, who, unlike Rooney, does responds to the crowd's cheers and curls a shot around Perch and past an unsighted Elliot. A lovely finish, and Cleverley is clearly relieved to make amends for his terrible miss in the first half.
Vuckic, a peripheral figure so far, receives the ball on the edge of the box with his back to goal. He rolls Keane, shimmies forward and curves a shot just wide of De Gea's far post. A good chance for Newcastle, who haven't been quite so direct in the second half.
Marveaux canters towards goal, offloads, then races behind the defence to receive the return pass which was neatly slipped through by Ameobi. Unfortunately the pass sends him slightly too wide, but he shoots anyway, missing the goal by some distance.
Another small scramble in the Man Utd box, which eventually sees Williamson's header loop up high and nestle on the roof of De Gea's net.
Vermijl, who has looked very useful, gets forward and whips in an excellent cross for Chicharito. The Mexican striker runs across the near post but can't quite angle his glancing header on target.
Welbeck is fed down the left channel and cuts inside, nutmegging Williamson before squaring for Anderson. This time the Brazilian skies his shot well over the bar.
Vuckic has all the ball inside Man Utd's box, but can't quite maneuver his feet to get a shot away.
Man Utd on the attack immediately. Chicharito races down the right flank and crosses for Welbeck, but Perch tracks his man well and heads clear.
Man Utd get the game back underway. No changes for either side.
Man Utd have created quite a few chances, forcing Elliot into a number of good saves. Cleverley should have put the home team ahead minutes before Anderson's strike nearly ripped a hole in the back of the net.
Newcastle have limited themselves to long, hopeful balls into the box and while they've troubled Man Utd's inexperienced defence on occasion, they haven't troubled De Gea. But they have a significant threat waiting on the bench in the shape of Papiss Cisse should they require him.
HALFTIME! A brilliant long range shot from Anderson, his first goal in a year, has given Man Utd a lead they probably deserve.
GOAL!! Anderson picks up the ball from Fletcher just inside his own half and dribbles towards goal, under pressure from Gosling and Vuckic. He looks to have been pushed too wide of goal to get a shot in, but releases a thunderbolt from 25-yards which fires in off the post. An excellent finish from the Brazilian.
Ameobi has barely lost a header so far. He's been a handful, but Vuckic hasn't linked well enough to make something out of the tall striker's many knockdowns.
A long throw finds Ameobi inside the box. The striker has the power and time to chest the ball, flick it up and attempt a volley which is blocked for a corner.
Man Utd break with speed and Chicharito plays a first time pass to Cleverley inside the box. The England midfielder is under no pressure, with time and space, but conspires to miss at the near post. Terrible effort, but Elliot deserves some credit for narrowing the angle and racing out at Cleverley's feet.
Gosling looks to have conceded possession to Welbeck deep in Newcastle's own half, but he redeems himself by whizzing in and tackling the England forward with a robust challenge. The game has become quite scrappy in midfield.
Vermijl is getting forward well for Man Utd. He passes to Chicharito, picks up the return ball and fires a cross into the danger area, but it evades everyone.
Rooney picks up the ball deep in his own half and plays a great, ranging pass to Welbeck down the channel. Welbeck brings the ball forward, almost slips, cuts inside past Williamson and drills a low hard shot at goal, but Elliot saves it.
Cleverley tries another pass over and behind the Newcastle defence in search of Welbeck this time, but Elliot is quick off his line and chests the ball away from danger.
Tavernier gets forward from leftback, running at the Man Utd defence. He cuts inside, breezes past Fletcher and fires a shot narrowly wide of De Gea's near post.
Rooney drops deep and scoops a lobbed through ball up and over the Newcastle defence for Chicharito, but the Mexican totally fails to connect with his shot and Newcastle clear.
First shot in anger from Rooney, but it's charged down by another player returning from injury, Coloccini. Not to be outdone, Fletcher puts in a crunching tackle to win possession back for Man Utd.
Newcastle continue to bombard Man Utd's penalty area with high balls whenever the opportunity to do so presents itself.
Anderson bursts forward from deep, playing a cute one-two with Cleverley, and fires a shot at goal. But Rob Elliot is equal to it, and palms the ball behind for a corner which Newcastle subsequently clear.
Obertan feeds Vuckic down the channel, who plays in a deep cross for Ameobi. The tall striker heads the ball down for Gosling with time and space inside the box, but the midfielder spoons his half volley over the bar.
Obertan bursts down the right and wins a corner, which is just about cleared by Man Utd. The Red Devils defence looks a bit shaky on setplays, understandably given what little game time they've had together at this level.
Marveaux send in a free-kick from deep. Both Coloccini and Williamson are in the box, and it's the latter who attacks the Frenchman's deep cross. Williamson heads the ball towards goal, but is ajudged to have fouled Wootton in the process.
Vermijl gets forward from right fullback and floats in an excellent cross. Several red shirts converge under it, with Chicharito heading just wide.
An optimistic shot from Buttner flies over the bar. The Dutch fullback is showing attacking intent already.
Man Utd look to be playing a narrow 4-3-3 with Rooney and Welbeck either side of Chicharito. Tom Cleverley has license to roam in midfield.
Newcastle get the game underway...
The experience and physical presence of Shola Ameobi looks a potential weapon against Man Utd's inexperienced centre-backs.
But Man Utd suffered a third round loss at Old Trafford against Leeds two years ago, and were knocked out by Crystal Palace at home last season.
Look away Newcastle fans, the Magpies haven't won at Old Trafford for 40 years.
Only James Perch and Mike Williamson are retained from the Newcastle side that faced Norwich at the weekend. Fabricio Coloccini returns for the Magpies after a hamstring injury and captains the side. Cheick Tiote also makes a return after an enforced absence through injury. Otherwise, the line-up mimics that deployed by Alan Pardew in the Europa League against Maritimo.
Wayne Rooney makes his return from the leg injury he picked up against Fulham, and he’ll be joined up front by Danny Welbeck and Chicharito. Darren Fletcher will start for the first time in 10 months, after his playing time was curtailed by a chronic bowel condition. A young and inexperienced back-line sees debuts handed to Marnick Vermijl and Scott Wootton. Michael Keane and Alexander Buttner complete the defence.
Newcastle starting XI: Elliot; Perch, Williamson, Coloccini, Tavernier; Obertan, Tiote, Gosling, Marveaux; Vuckic; Shola Ameobi. Subs: Harper, Ferguson, Bigirimana, Anita, Amalfitano, Sammy Ameobi, Cisse
Man Utd starting XI: De Gea; Vermijl, M Keane, Wootton, Buttner; Fletcher, Cleverley, Anderson; Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez. Subs: Evans, Johnstone, Lingard, Tunnicliffe, Brady, Powell, King.
