Produced a string of jaw-dropping saves to keep United in the game in the second half. At full stretch to deny Muniain twice and Llorente as the United defence crumbled.
Took up good defensive positions but was caught out by the visitors' slick attacks. Completely burned for pace by Susaeta in the first half.
Read the game well but struggled to get to grips with the power, technique and goal threat of Llorente. Slow to react for the equaliser and substituted in the 55th minute with a head injury.
The Frenchman had a difficult game and struggled to cope as Iraola and Susaeta continually attacked with speed and trickery.
Athletic's control of possession meant he had few opportunities to drive forward while he was rather naive defensively against the trickery of Muniain, who reacted sharper than the Brazilian to score the visitors' third goal following De Gea's save.
Worked hard in midfield but couldn't get hold of the ball before moving to central defence following Smalling's injury. Positionally suspect and showed a lack of anticipation for De Marcos' goal.
The Welshman showed moments of class when in possession but was largely overrun and outnumbered in midfield.
Offered no attacking threat despite working hard. Lack of composure on the ball stark in comparison with the Athletic Bilbao players.
After his heroics against Spurs, a virtually anonymous performance from the England winger. Never involved in the game and didn't even show glimpses of his quality.
Opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a poacher's finish, reacting first to turn the ball in on the rebound before converting from the spot in added time. Showed glimpses of class when he was able to pick the ball up in pockets of space but was often frustrated.
Always lurked on the shoulder of the last man and did the hard work for Rooney's opener after wriggling a yard of space and firing towards the corner.
Unlucky to see Rooney score from the rebound after a sharp stop to keep out Hernandez's goalbound effort. Sent the wrong way from the penalty and had little else to do.
Played virtually as a winger for much of the game, dancing down the right touchline and looking to play quick passes with his team-mates. Also had a couple of decent attempts on the United goal.
Strong in the tackle and in the main handled Hernandez well, despite allowing the Mexican to fire a shot at goal as United took the lead.
Solid defensively as he made some important interceptions and comfortable in possession.
Won the game for his side with a wonderful left-footed volley into the corner with the ball dropping over his shoulder. Drifted into space, constantly on the move and happy to receive the ball under pressure. Foolish to handle for United's penalty.
Justified the hype with an exemplary display. Alert defensively and so comfortable stepping into midfield with the ball.
Helped the Spanish side control the midfield for much of the game with his alert interceptions and tidy passing. Good discipline to drop back into defence when required.
Superb technically to deliver a number of killer passes from which the likes of Susaeta and Muniain should have scored - and then delivered a wonderful chip for De Marcos to score. Summed up Athletic's pass and move football.
Very lively in the final third and set up Llorente's equaliser with an excellent cross from the right. Showed his blistering pace in the first half to storm clear of Evans but lifted his lob wide of the post.
Played on the left and caused United all sorts of problems with his skill and trickery. Evaded defenders and made the right decisions in the final third. Denied by two brilliant saves from De Gea in the second half before he reacted quicker than anyone to score his side's third.
The focal point for the Bilbao attack, he led from the front with physical strength and technical skill. No surprise that he produced a bullet header to equalise and came close to scoring his second after the break. Replaced by Toquero in the 81st minute.
- 40 B. Amos
- 5 R. Ferdinand
- 20 Fábio
Replaced Giggs 15 minutes from time but had little influence on the game.
The Brazilian came on in the 61st minute but looked rusty on his return from injury.
Replaced the injured Smalling in the 55th minute. Sat in midfield but couldn't stop the pressure.
- 19 D. Welbeck
