Live Commentary

  • The bad news for West Ham fans is that they have to do it all over again when they host Manchester City in the second leg on Tuesday January 21. I think even the most optimistic of West Ham fans will concede that coming back from that first-leg deficit is an impossible task. The two teams return to Premier League action this weekend when Manchester City travel to Newcastle while West Ham face a huge relegation six-pointer at strugglers Cardiff. Thanks for joining me, Max Bentley, on this live commentary. Until next time, goodbye.
  • As for West Ham, where do they go from here? The Hammers are one point off the bottom of the Premier League and have effectively been dumped out of both domestic cup competitions within the space of a few days. The signing of Lacina Traore and the return of Andy Carroll will certainly help to an extent but you get the feeling that West Ham will need to add more players in the transfer window if they are to achieve league survival.
  • Are we looking at the Premier League and the League Cup champions? Manchester City have now scored 59 goals in 15 home games this season and with Sergio Aguero to return, they will take some stopping.
  • FT: Manchester City 6-0 West Ham. Manuel Pellegrini's side can already prepare their plans for the Capital One Cup final as an Alvaro Negredo hat trick, Edin Dzeko double and Yaya Toure solo effort consign West Ham to a second cup thrashing within a week.
  • 90' + 1'
Nasri's performance may be overshadowed by the goalscoring exploits of Negredo and Dzeko but the France attacker has been magnificent this evening. He looks to make it seven when he deceives Johnson with some neat trickery but his shot is too central and Adrian gratefully collects.
  • 90'
STAT: Dzeko now has six goals in the League Cup this season, making him the tournament's top goalscorer.
  • 89'
    Assist Aleksandar Kolarov
  • 89'
    Goal Edin Dzeko
DZEKO MAKES IT 6-0! It's a wonderfully-worked goal from the hosts as Lopes' neat backheel sends Kolarov clear down the left. He looks up and picks out Dzeko on the edge of the box who thumps an unstoppable first-time effort into the top corner. Adrian has made some fine saves but he can get nowhere near that one.
  • 87'
We all know that Kolarov has a deadly left foot but the West Ham players seem to forget as they back off the Serbian and are fortunate to see his swerving effort bounce narrowly wide of the goal. Can Manchester City find a sixth goal in the closing stages?
  • 85'
Even the West Ham fans are laughing as Downing slices a cross wildly out of play under little pressure down the right. In truth, it's been a laughable performance from the Hammers who have offered absolutely nothing going forward.
  • 83'
ADRIAN DENIES DZEKO AGAIN! Nasri has been at his creative best for Manchester City today and he cuts inside from the left excellently before teeing up Dzeko inside the box. The Bosnia striker gets ahead of his marker once again and looks to sweep a first-time shot into the bottom corner but Adrian reacts superbly to get down low and tip the ball around the post. He is perhaps the only West Ham player who can take some credit from his performance.
  • 81'
It's hardly been a debut to remember for Roger Johnson but the 30-year-old centre-back has made some important blocks and he does so again to deny Dzeko from the edge of the box. Having been relegated every season for the past three seasons, is he going to be doomed to the Championship with West Ham?
  • 79'
    Substitution Negredo Aleksandar Kolarov
Negredo has been simply unstoppable tonight and he comes off to a standing ovation from the home fans. Kolarov will replace him for the final eleven minutes or so.
  • 77'
You can sense by the body language of these West Ham players that they clearly want this game to be over. Has there been a more difficult week in Sam Allardyce's spell at the club? I don't think so.
  • 75'
    Substitution Joey O'Brien R. Raţ
Sam Allardyce decides to make his third and final change, replacing Joey O'Brien with Razvan Rat. It's been a miserable evening for the Republic of Ireland left-back.
  • 74'
Negredo has clearly not lost his hunger for goal and he goes close to scoring a fourth as he fizzes an effort narrowly past the post.
  • 73'
    Substitution David Silva Marcos Lopes
Manuel Pellegrini opts to make his second change, introducing Brazilian talent Lopes in place of Silva. Let's see what the youngster has got.
  • 71'
GOOD SAVE FROM ADRIAN! The West Ham goalkeeper has produced some smart saves this evening and he dives down low to his left superbly to keep out Dzeko's powerful downward header. If it wasn't for Adrian, the scoreline could easily be six or seven.
  • 69'
The two Manchester City strikers combine as Dzeko feeds a neat ball into Negredo's path. The Spaniard unleashes a fierce drive in search of his fourth goal but Johnson reads the play excellently and makes a brilliant block.
  • 68'
Manchester City are teasing their opponents with their clever triangular passing but Dzeko eventually loses patience and watches his powerful drive well blocked by McCartney.
  • 66'
    Substitution Yaya Touré Martín Demichelis
Matthew Taylor sums up West Ham's evening as he wildly sends a cross out of play under no pressure on the left wing. Manchester City make a substitution with Martin Demichelis coming on for Yaya Toure. It seems the Argentine will play in an unfamiliar central midfield position.
  • 64'
Manchester City are showing no sign of relent in attack however and Negredo attempts to turn Silva's pass into Nasri's path but overhits his effort. Manuel Pellegrini is readying Demichelis on the touchline.
  • 62'
You have to credit these travelling West Ham supporters as they are still getting behind their team and singing their traditional bubbles anthem. Can the players reward their efforts with a goal? It does seem unlikely.
  • 60'
    Assist Gael Clichy
  • 60'
    Goal Edin Dzeko
DZEKO GETS HIS GOAL! The Bosnian keeps up his record of scoring in every round of the competition as he gets in front of O'Brien to tap in Clichy's teasing cross from close range. It's another five goals conceded in a cup competition for West Ham.
  • 59'
West Ham make a rare venture into the Man City half but it comes to nothing as Kompany hacks clear Downing's cross from the left. I don't think Carlton Cole has touched the ball since coming on as a half-time substitute.
  • 57'
    Substitution Mark Noble Alou Diarra
Sam Allardyce looks to add some more muscle to the West Ham midfield by introducing Alou Diarra in place of captain Mark Noble.
  • 56'
There's a tussle between Dzeko and O'Brien in the West Ham box as the Hammers' defender is furious when the Bosnian theatrically goes to ground looking for a penalty. Roger Johnson wisely breaks up the confrontation.
  • 54'
Dzeko is looking hungry to open his account for the evening and he goes extremely close to making it 5-0 when his well-struck effort from the edge of the box flashes narrowly over the crossbar. West Ham just cannot get hold of the ball.
  • 52'
Sam Allardyce spoke of his hopes of getting a draw in this match tonight but I think he would bite your hand off for a 4-0 defeat at the moment. The gulf in class between these two sides is extraordinary.
  • 51'
SO CLOSE TO 5-0! Yaya Toure has already scored four free kicks this season and after Negredo wins a foul on the edge of the box, he curls a trademark effort inches over the bar. Some of the home fans actually thought that went in.
  • 49'
    Goal Negredo
NEGREDO GETS HIS HAT TRICK! It's the worst possible start to the second half for West Ham as Silva's low cross deflects wickedly off the heels of Demel and straight into the path of Negredo who bends a first-time effort into the far corner. That's his second treble for Manchester City since joining in the summer.
  • 48'
It's a fairly slow start to the second half although Manchester City win a corner when Demel nervously shuffles Zabaleta's cross behind.
  • 46'
    Substitution Modibo Maiga Carlton Cole
  • 46'
The teams emerge from the tunnel for the second half and Manchester City get the game back underway. The visitors have made one substitution with Carlton Cole replacing Modibo Maiga.
  • STAT: West Ham have now conceded 19 goals in their last five-and-a-half matches in all competitions.
  • HT: Manchester City 3-0 West Ham. Manuel Pellegrini's side already have one foot in the final after a dominant first-half display. Strikes from Alvaro Negredo (2) and Yaya Toure have inflicted more misery on Sam Allardyce's porous West Ham side and you get the feeling that there are more home goals to come in this one.
  • 45' + 2'
WEST HAM HAVE A SHOT ON TARGET! There are even a few gasps of surprise from the Manchester City fans as Diame's powerful effort from outside the box is parried by Pantilimon. Fortunately for the Romanian goalkeeper there is no white shirt following up the rebound and he gathers the ball at the second attempt.
  • 45'
The return of Andy Carroll and the imminent loan signing of Lacina Traore cannot come sooner for West Ham. They look completely out of ideas when going forward and toothless in attack.
  • 44'
West Ham look to cause Manchester City problems at the end of the half by pumping the ball into the box but Taylor cannot divert his header towards goal after Maiga's accurate flick-on. I don't think Pantilimon has had a save to make in this first half.
  • 42'
The West Ham fans cheer 'Ole' as their players make a rare string of passes. There's certainly more goals for Manchester City in this game if they want them.
  • 40'
    Goal Yaya Touré
TOURE MAKES IT 3-0! It's a shocking defensive performance from West Ham as a breakdown in communication between McCartney and Taylor allows Toure to steal possession on the half-way line. The Ivorian powers his way towards goal and with Johnson standing off, he fires a low drive beyond the fingertips of Adrian and into the net. Schoolboy defending from the Hammers.
  • 39'
West Ham have a rare chance to counter attack but Downing sums up their spirits as he wastefully overhits an easy pass. The half-time whistle cannot come sooner for the visitors.
  • 37'
IT SHOULD BE 3-0! Nasri and Silva combine excellently inside the West Ham area and the France midfielder jinks his way past two defenders before unselfishly teeing up the unmarked Dzeko on the edge of the box. The striker has the simple task of picking his spot but he cannot produce the finishing touch as he leans back and fires high over the bar.
  • 35'
West Ham just cannot get close to the Manchester City penalty area at the moment and Taylor attempts to reduce the deficit with one of his trademark long-range efforts, only to see the ball balloon into row z.
  • 34'
David Silva is pulling the strings in midfield and the West Ham players cannot get close to the Spanish magician at the moment. He feeds a neat pass to Negredo on the edge of the box but the Spaniard is denied his hat trick as his powerful attempt flashes high over the bar.
  • 33'
Edin Dzeko has four goals in this competition and he looks to extend the lead but his long-range effort is well blocked by O'Brien. Incidentally, the highest goalscorer in the League Cup this season is Peterborough striker Lee Tomlin who has found the net five times.
  • 31'
It's all Manchester City at the moment and Silva whips a teasing corner into the box which Garcia hooks narrowly over the crossbar. On this performance so far, you would have to say that Manuel Pellegrini's side look strong favourites to win the League Cup.
  • 29'
The confidence is running through this Manchester City side now and Dzeko looks to make it 3-0 but his rasping effort from outside the box flies into the stands. If West Ham aren't careful, this could be a second successive five-goal drubbing.
  • 26'
    Assist Edin Dzeko
  • 26'
    Goal Negredo
NEGREDO MAKES IT 2-0! It's a wonderful move from Manchester City as Dzeko's sublime reverse pass sends Negredo through on goal. The Spaniard powers his way into the box and despite the best attempts of McCartney, he finds the top right corner of the net with a rising drive. The Hammers have it all to do now.
  • 25'
The Manchester City fans erupt into song as Yaya Toure jogs his way gingerly back onto the field.
  • 24'
There is a major injury concern for Manchester City here as Yaya Toure hobbles off the field with a knee injury. The Ivorian appears to be in some discomfort.
  • 22'
ADRIAN MAKES TWO BRILLIANT SAVES! The West Ham goalkeeper produces a fine stop to deny Silva's fierce shot from the edge of the box before flinging himself to his left-hand side moments later to tip Nasri's curling shot around the post. Can Manchester City find a second goal?
  • 20'
STAT: Only Bayern Munich have triumphed at the Etihad Stadium this season, winning 3-1 in the Champions League at the start of October.
  • 18'
Sam Allardyce will be quietly satisfied by the way his side have responded to going behind. Joe Cole does well to rob Garcia in possession midway inside the opposition half and Diame opts to try his luck from range but can only drag his shot wide of the target.
  • 16'
West Ham have responded well and Dzeko performs his defensive responsibilities to prevent Maiga heading in Downing's drifted cross at the back post. The statistics do not bode well for West Ham who have won only one of their last nine away matches.
  • 14'
That Negredo strike was the 54th home goal that Manchester City have scored this season. After their collapse away to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, West Ham fans must be fearful after going behind early on. The Hammers need to show some character here.
  • 12'
    Assist Yaya Touré
  • 12'
    Goal Negredo
NEGREDO GIVES MANCHESTER CITY THE LEAD! It's route one stuff as Yaya Toure's long ball from inside his own half catches out the two West Ham centre-backs and Negredo nips in behind them to volley the ball emphatically into the bottom corner. That was too easy for Manuel Pellegrini's side.
  • 10'
West Ham win their first corner of the game when Clichy deflects Downing's cross behind. Taylor whips the resulting set-piece into the box but it is too close to Pantilimon who plucks the ball out of the air with ease.
  • 9'
There has only been one previous meeting between Manchester City and West Ham in the League Cup and that was a third-round encounter back in 1984 which the Citizens won 2-1.
  • 7'
West Ham are not afraid to attack themselves however although Taylor's hopeful punt forward is well defended by Lescott. There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the former Everton defender, with West Ham one of a number of clubs linked with a January move.
  • 5'
Manchester City continue to exert the early pressure and Silva's corner is met at the near post by the head of Garcia who nods the ball narrowly wide. Manuel Pellegrini's side have scored a staggering 53 goals in their 14 home games in the campaign to date.
  • 3'
Manchester City are enjoying plenty of early possession and they nearly open the scoring when O'Brien hesitates and fails to get rid of Nasri's low cross from the left. Zabaleta looks to hook the ball towards goal and McCartney's clearance deflects off Negredo's shins and into the grateful gloves of Adrian. A nervy start from the visitors.
  • 1'
Jonathan Moss blows his whistle and West Ham get the game underway. The last time that these two sides met, back in mid-October, Manchester City ran out 3-1 winners with goals from Sergio Aguero (2) and David Silva.
  • Captains Vincent Kompany and Mark Noble lead the two sides out of the tunnel and onto the wet playing surface. Manchester City are in their traditional sky blue jerseys with West Ham in their alternative white strip. Kick-off is moments away...
  • Goals from Aleksandar Kolarov and Edin Dzeko (2) gave Manchester City a 3-1 win over Leicester City in the quarter-finals whereas West Ham sealed their place in tonight's contest as they came back from a goal behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur thanks to late strikes from Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga.
  • West Ham (4-3-3): Adrian, Demel, Johnson, O’Brien, McCartney; Taylor, Noble (c), Diame; Downing, J.Cole, Maiga.
  • Man City (4-4-2): Pantilimon; Zabaleta, Kompany (c), Lescott, Clichy; Nasri, Yaya Toure, Garcia, Silva; Negredo, Dzeko.
  • TEAM NEWS: Manchester City recall Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure to the starting line-up after the pair missed the 1-1 FA Cup draw with Blackburn at the weekend. West Ham make eight changes to the side which were defeated 5-0 by Nottingham Forest with only Adrian, Stewart Downing and Madibo Maiga keeping their places. Former Birmingham defender Roger Johnson makes his debut for the Hammers after signing on a six-month deal from Wolves.
  • Manchester City have won this competition on two occasions, in 1970 and 1976, but West Ham are bidding to lift the trophy for the first time, having finished as runners-up to West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool in 1966 and 1981 respectively. Bringing you all the action from the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg from the Etihad Stadium, my name is Max Bentley.
  • It has not been a good week for West Ham manager Sam Allardyce. After losing to fellow strugglers Fulham on New Year's Day, West Ham were hammered 5-0 by Championship side Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, albeit by fielding a number of youth players. Allardyce has been given the vote of confidence by owners David Sullivan and David Gold but if he does not get back to winning ways soon, he could become the next Premier League casualty.
  • 180 minutes (plus potentially extra time and penalties) separate either Manchester City or West Ham United from a place in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley. Manuel Pellegrini is the firm favourite to win his first trophy in English football but as this competition has shown in the past, with Bradford City last year a prime example, anything is possible.
