Manchester City's Champions League dream is ended prematurely once again as the champions of Spain hold the champions of England to a draw. Mancini's men can now only qualify for the Europa League, but need to better Ajax's result over Madrid against Dortmund in Germany.
FULL-TIME: Manchester City 1-1 Real Madrid
90' + 5'
Yellow CardJavi García
90' + 5'
Madrid look like they will hang on to the draw. Tevez hopefully hoofs a cross into the box but no one in sky blue is there to meet it and Casillas calmly collects.
90' + 3'
Silva nearly picks out Tevez with a wonderful scooped pass, the Argentine can't quite get his foot on to the ball though. Small margins making a big difference.
90' + 3'
Milner battles his way down the left flank against Varane but is unlucky not to win a throw-in deep in the visitors half.
90' + 2'
Maicon pulls it back to Yaya Toure at the edge of the area, but the Ivorian swings a wild right foot at the ball and balloons his shot in the stands.
Ángel Di María
The fourth official indicates that there will be a minimum of five minutes to be added on. Jose Mourinho isn't best pleased about that.
City continue to press and probe but the best they can do is swing crosses in from wide areas, which Pepe and Sergio Ramos have defended well comfortably all evening.
Coentrao does superbly to turn away Maicon's first time cross on the volley. The corner comes to David Silva on the edge of the box but the Spaniard is forced to play the ball backwards.
Dzeko and Tevez combine well on the left-side before Tevez attempts a left-footed shot from the edge of the area, which Casillas comfortably puts his cap on.
Ronaldo pinches the ball off Yaya Toure and runs at four City defenders before Kompany abruptly palms him off. The Real Madrid man is still gesticulating in perfect synchronicity with his manager on the touchline.
CHANCE! Dzeko gets himself to the byline and only needs to play a low cross across the goal for David Silva. The frontman instead elects to lift his cross and fails to pick out any of his on rushing team-mates. Wasted!
Ronaldo remains a threat on the counter for Real Madrid, but the script has been flipped at the Etihad. The City fans now believe and are doing their best to encourage the players with a now raucous atmosphere.
Penalty GoalSergio Agüero
GOAL! Sergio Aguero converts the spot kick to bring City back on terms with just over a quarter of an hour to play. Arbeloa lost his footing and clumsily brought down the Argentinian to give City a route back into the match. Game on!
RED CARD FOR ARVALO ARBELOA!
PENALTY TO MANCHESTER CITY!
Twenty minutes to play at the Etihad and City need to score twice to have any chance of progressing into the knockout stage. It's all groans and grunts from the City fans though as Mancni's men are finding the visitors difficult to breakdown.
A quick update from the other match in Group D. Robert Lewandowski has just fired Dortmund's fourth at the Amsterdam Arena against Ajax.
Frantic stuff now, as Ronaldo races up the other end and flashes a shot at Hart, who can only parry with the Portuguese winger straight onto the rebound. City survive thanks to Kompany's last ditch challenge.
WHAT A SAVE! Casillas somehow rushes across his net and spreads himself to keep out Sergio Aguero from literally a yard out. Mancini shakes his head in disbelief.
Khedira takes David Silva's free kick flush in the face. There will be a short delay in the game while the German receives treatment.
Yellow CardSergio Ramos
Controversy! Javi Garcia brings down Arbeloa right in front of the referee's assistant behind the goal. No decision given when on first sight it looked like a free kick.
Yellow CardPablo Zabaleta
Nasri chips a ball into the box and Dzeko tries to squeeze it in on the volley from a tight angle. Casillas does well to meet the City striker and make the finish difficult.
Chance! The visitors waste another chance to double their lead. Benzema and Khedira seemed to get into each others way as Ronaldo floated a cross over Joe Hart with three players in queued up to head it in at the back post.
Kompany gets a vital boot on the ball to block Di Maria's pass into Cristiano Ronaldo. City then go up the other end and Silva tests Casillas with a side-footed effort from inside the area. It's easy for the Madrid man as Silva has to react quickly to even get the shot on target.
Yellow CardSamir Nasri
Sergio Ramos reads the interchange between Aguero and Silva perfectly to scupper Manchester City's break. Much better from the hosts early on in the second period.
BIG CHANCE! David Silva shows some intricate footwork inside the box and pokes it out to Aguero, whose first touch is too heavy, allowing Casillas to smother. Dzeko was unmarked and waiting for a square ball.
Maicon delivers a decent cross towards the near post but Aguero can't quite adjust his body in time to test Casillas with his header.
Yellow CardXabi Alonso
One change for the hosts at half-time. Kolorav has made way for former Madrid player Javi Garcia. The Spaniard will step in alongside Toure in central midfield.
Real Madrid take the kick-off and we are underway in the second half.
The visitors go into the break with a one goal lead and in reality it could have been three or four. The impetus is on Mancini's side to break down Madrid's deep defensive line, but after periods of probing the hosts are being left vulnerable to the Spanish champions' lightning quick counterattacks.
HALF-TIME: Manchester City 0-1 Real Madrid
City fans are furious as Real Madrid play on when the linesman has his flag up for offside. It's Ronaldo who is ahead of the play, but the ball never finds him. Benzema wastes the opportunity with an ambitious effort from distance.
Nervy moment for Hart. Di Maria's low cross comes off Nastasic and almost finds it's way to Benzema in the box. Hart does well to react before the Frenchman.
Sergio Aguero of all people has to track back and dispossess Ronaldo as he gallops towards the City box.
The tempo to the game has dropped significantly now. The impetus is now on City to break down the deep Madrid defence, with Mourinho's men primed and ready to pounce on the counterattack .
Kolarov has an opportunity from a free kick about 30 yards from goal but sends his left-footed curling effort well wide of the goal.
Great chance wasted! David Silva dribbles his way to the byline and cuts the ball back towards the penalty spot, where Dzeko is waiting to convert, but the Bosnian is off balance and just dangles his foot at the ball in a rather uncoordinated way.
Bad news for Mancini; Yaya Toure is out of City's next Champions League game away to Dortmund! The Ivorian picks up a booking for bringing down Ronaldo, who is in electrifying form in this opening half hour at the Etihad.
Yellow CardYaya Touré
More like it from City. Maicon drifts in-field from the right-flank, exchanges passes with Tevez nicely but then prods the ball wide of the post from inside the area. Best chance for the hosts so far.
Real Madrid look absolutely deadly going forward, unfortunately for Roberto Mancini, you can't really say the same about Manchester City at the moment. Plenty of time for that to change though!
Great save! Khedira squeezes through the City backline and is one-on-one with Hart, but the keeper comes rushing out to thwart the German. The Three Lions' keeper then gets City on to the attack with a great kick out to Aguero but Madrid defend the danger well.
Just as I say that, Carlos Tevez curls one from the edge of the area. Tipped over for a corner by Casillas.
Over 20 minutes gone and City are yet to register a shot on Iker Casillas' goal.
It's all Real Madrid. Di Maria shows great pace down the right-side and crosses for Benzema, who then chests the ball down for Modric to strike at goal. City could be two or three down already.
What a chance! Ronaldo has two bites at the cherry but City survive! First he raced away from the City defence before cheekily lifting the ball over Hart, only for Zabaleta to stop it on the line. The ball then found it's way back to Ronaldo, who was denied by a good save from Hart.
It's Ronaldo to Khedira again. This time the winger plays in a cross to the near post but the German sends his header into the side netting. Ronaldo certainly looks up for this.
Close! Sami Khedira comes close to doubling the vistor's lead. Ronaldo throws a couple of tricks on the left flank before firing a low cross towards the German midfielder, who opens his body out too much and directs his effort wide of the far post.
AssistÁngel Di María
GOAL! Karim Benzema heaps more misery on Manchester City in the Champions league! The Frenchman evades Maicon at the back post to simply guide in Angel Di Maria's cross from close range.
Coentrao does well to keep the ball in play and finds himself approaching the byline as Manchester City appeal for a throw-in. The Real Madrid left-back can't get his cross past Kompany though.
City earn a free-kick on the left flank and Iker Casillas is forced to come leaping off his line to punch Kolarov's swinging free kick away from danger.
Manchester City start brightly and are on the front foot straight from the start but Dzeko and Aguero can't quite link up in the first attack of the match.
Manchester City take the kick-off and we are underway at the Etihad!
The teams are in the tunnel and we are moments away from the big kick-off!
It seems Manchester City require a minor miracle to make it out of Group D ahead of either Borussia Dortmund or Real Madrid but all hope is not lost! Lokomotiv Moskow, with one point after four games in 2002-03 and Porto, with two points in 2004-05, both somehow wriggled into the knockout stages.
Tonight also marks Jose Mourinho's 100th game in charge in Europe's premier club competition. 'The Special One' also becomes the youngest to do so. Messrs Ferguson, Wenger and Ancelotti are the others to have achieved that feat.
Cristiano Ronaldo is back in Manchester for the first time since his £80 million transfer to the Spanish capital. The Portuguese winger netted four goals at the Etihad during his Manchester United days but also saw red twice at the ground.
Former Spurs midfielder Luka Modric returns to England for the first time since leaving White Hart Lane and makes Jose Mourinho's starting line-up in the Champions League for only the second time; Mesut Ozil drops to the bench. Elsewhere, Sami Khedira returns from injury to anchor the visitor's midfield alongside Xabi Alonso.
Roberto Mancini looks like he will again deploy a 3-5-2 formation in the Champions League. Edin Dzeko partners Sergio Aguero in attack, while Pablo Zabaleta, Matija Nastasic and Vincent Kompany make up the back three.
Real Madrid: Casillas; Arbeloa, Pepe, Sergio Ramos, Coentrao; Xabi Alonso, Khedira; Di María, Modric, Ronaldo; Benzema. Subs: Adan, Varane, Kaka, Ozil, Albiol, Callejon, Nacho.
Manchester City: Hart; Zabaleta, Kompany, Nastasic; Maicon, Yaya Toure, Nasri, Kolarov; Aguero, Dzeko, Silva. Subs: Pantilimon, Lescott, Milner, Javi Garcia, Barry, Sinclair, Tevez.
