  • The full-time whistle blows and despite winning ten points in their first ever Champions League campaign and an impressive win over Bayer Munich they will have to be content with a place in the Europa League this season. A spirited showing but sadly it was too little too late for Roberto Mancini's men.
  • 88'
Munich are now the side with all the possession as the games moves into the final minutes. Stefan Savic was a surprise inclusion this evening and has not disappointed with an assured display in the unfamiliar position of right-back.
  • 85'
This game is now petering out with the points secure for Man City. Bayern have left the majority of their stars on the bench as they decide the risk is to high to play them in this fixture. Very comfortable evening at the Etihad on the whole.

This is likely to be the last ten minutes of Manchester City's debut Champions League campaign but they are determined to go out on a high. City are unlucky to be going out but are now sure to be favorites for the Europa League.

Although I'm sure the news will have filtered its way down to the players Man City are continuing to attack. Aguero combines well with Nasri before Butt slides in to stop the Argentine.
  • 77'
    SubstitutionEdin Dzeko Nigel De Jong
  • 77'
Further bad news from Spain as Marek Hamsik doubles Napoli's lead against Villarreal. It is now looking very likely that Roberto Mancini's men will have to be content with a place in the Europa League.
  • 76'
Toure starts a move with a sweeping long ball to Silva who ran at the defenders before playing in Ageuro who wriggled his way past a couple of defenders but no City player could get on the end of his cut-back.
  • 73'
Tymoshchuk tries his luck from range when he would have been better off passing to Rafinha who had made a good overlap. Very comfortable save for Hart as he gathers into his chest.
  • 72'
Bayern have really lacked urgency this evening which is surprising considering there is a number of players being given an opportunity to impress this evening. This has been very comfortable for Man City but sadly as things stand it will be Bayern and Napoli progressing.
  • 69'
Dzeko drives forward for City - he really does possess a deceiving amount of pace but his cut-back could not find any of the four on-rushing City players.
  • 66'
Despite the bad news from Spain, Man City continue to push on and go close through Gareth Barry. Aguero worked well down the wing before his cut back was met by Barry but Butt pushed his well struck effort away.
  • 65'
The tempo has certainly dropped here with City very comfortable leaders. Bad news for Man City though as Napoli take the lead in Spain, a groan goes around the ground as word is spread.
  • 62'
Alaba hits well from the edge of the area for Munich but Hart parries clear. I believe that is only the second time Hart has been tested all evening.
  • 61'
Good spell of possession by Munich as they try to stem the City momentum. This result looks safe for the home side now as all the focus for the home fans turns to the on-goings in Spain between Napoli and Villarreal.
  • 58'
Munich are now warming up some of their stars. Muller and Lahm are now going through their routines as its appears likely they will being introduced before long.
  • 55'
Despite City's fantastic performance here it could all be in vain if Napoli were to score against Villarreal. The Italians are currently drawing in Spain but if they were to win this result would could for very little for Mancini's men.

    GoalYaya Touré
Incredible football by Man City as Yaya Toure doubles their advantage! Silva passed to Toure who played a fantastic one-two with Dzeko before poking the ball past Butt. Irresistible one-touch football that Munich simply couldn't deal with.
  • 51'
Rafinha whips in a good cross aiming for Olic though Savic does well to get his head infront although his challenge looked untidy. His lack of experience could be targeted by the visitors as they look to break down the defence.
  • 48'
Bayern have an abundance of talent and experience on the bench if needed later on as City once again look to assert themselves in this game. Dzeko has an early effort that goes over.
  • 45'
Bayern Munich kick off this second period. This is a huge 45 minutes in the history of Manchester City as they bid to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League in their history.
  • The half-time whistle blows and Man City are leading 1-0. It was a slow start but City grew as the half went on and ultimately will be disappointed to be just one in front. As things stand Mancini's men will qualify for the knock-out stages but there is plenty of time still to be played in this one.
  • 45'
Aguero has a curling effort just inside the area that goes just wide. There will be just one minute added on here as Bayern will be desperate for the whistle to blow just one behind.
  • 43'
Man City have sparked into life this past five minutes as both David Silva and Gareth Barry go close. Silva wriggled between defenders before shooting from a tight angle though Butt parried away to Barry who then shot over under pressure.
  • 41'
Bayern look shell-shocked as Man City look to score once more before the half-time break. It will be very interesting to see how the visitors react knowing their qualification is already sealed.
  • 39'
Man City almost immediately double their lead through Aguero. Toure drove forward well before finding Aguero who appeared to have beaten two defenders and the goalkeeper only to see Jerome Boateng clear off the line to keep his side in touch.

    GoalDavid Silva
And just as I predicted Man City haven taken the lead through the outstanding David Silva! An innocuous ball was played in to Dzeko who flicked it to Silva who volleyed from outside the area into the bottom corner leaving Butt with absolutely no chance!
  • 36'
Luis Gustavo is handed a yellow for consistent fouling allowing Man City another set-piece opportunity With the quality of Silva ans Nasri on the field surely it will be a matter of time before the killer ball is found.
  • 35'
    Yellow CardLuiz Gustavo
  • 34'
Nasri once again has an opportunity to deliver a good cross but Bayern clear easily. Man City have no doubt been the better side though they are failing to make their dominance pay with efforts on goal.
  • 31'
Although Bayern are playing a very much second-string side there is still plenty of Champions League experience with Tymoshchuk, Olic and Butt all in the starting XI and there is a real organised feel about the Germans despite carrying little threat.
  • 28'
Corner by Silva is not punched away convincingly by Butt and both Barry and Nasri head goalwards before the keeper has the situation in control.
  • 25'
Tymoshchuk tries his luck for Bayern following a shift counter but his effort is deflected wide for a corner. The visitors have rested Robben, Gomez and Ribery and they are clearly lacking an attacking threat.
  • 23'
Bayern are once again caught napping in possession as Aguero intercepts and almost gets on the end of his deflection before Butt arrives just in time to clear. The Germans are playing like a team with little worries so far.
  • 20'
Luis Gustavo is caught dwelling on the ball by Nasri who plays a one-two with Aguero before trying his luck from outside the area but he scuffs his effort wide.
  • 17'
Man City are starting to dominate the possession in this game though they must take advantage when they are on the front foot. Alaba almost scores with Bayern on the counter-attack as the Man City midfield is caught napping.
  • 15'
David Silva has a good chance to deliver a cross into the danger area from the edge of the box. Silva whipped it towards the back post aimed at Lescott but it went straight in, only for the referee to decide there was a foul on the goalkeeper.
  • 14'
    Yellow CardIvica Olic
  • 13'
Vincent Kompany lost out in an aerial battle with Peterson who won a flick on to Olic. The Croatian had far too much space and fired first time on the volley from the edge of the area forcing Joe Hart to parry for a corner.
  • 10'
Slow start to this one as David Silva tries to dictate the tempo. The Spaniard picked up the ball 30 yards out before trying to slip in Dzeko but Badstuber shadowed it comfortably to safety.
  • 7'
First attempt of the evening falls to Aguero but his header goes well over. Yaya Toure played a nice one-two with Nasri before the Frenchmen whipped in a cross that Aguero met well but he couldn't test the veteran Butt in goal.
  • 6'
Stefan Savic has started for Man City in the right-back position following injury to Micah Richards whilst Zabaleta is only deemed fit enough to a place on the bench. Interestingly Mancini has opted against the experience of Kolo Toure following his comments mid-week.
  • 3'
Game starts with a slow tempo as Bayern pass the ball around the back-four. Notably former City player Jerome Boateng's first touches are met by boos by the home support.
  • 1'
It is Manchester City that get this game underway. The home side have unsurprisingly fielded their strongest possible line-up whilst Bayern have rested a number of their players as they enjoy tonight's game knowing they have already qualified.
  • Good evening and welcome to Goal.com's live commentary of Manchester City's crucial Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich. For Roberto Mancini's men to progress this evening they must beat the German league leaders and hope that Villarreal do not get beaten by Napoli.
