That's my cue for an exit, from me, Keeghann Sinanan, its been fantastic stuff today! We've got you covered here at Goal.com post match, with the full time report, player ratings and match reactions still to come! Till next time!
The hosts now edge towards mid-table status, two points off the relegation zone in 13th place. Meanwhile, Bayern miss a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the Bundesliga, and now sit a point behind Gladbach and new table toppers Dortmund.
What a great match, and a fantastic advert for the Bundesliga! Three well-taken goals from Mainz bettered the unlikeliest of braces from Daniel Van Buyten to earn a priceless win in their battle against relegation. Mainz showed some great stuff in attack, and did what they had to do defensively. Bayern meanwhile were decidedly off colour, but as is the mark of a great team, still managed to keep the game competitive to the very end.
90' + 5'
And that's it, Mainz pull it out in the end!!!!!
90' + 4'
We're into injury time in injury time, because Bungert needs a bit of treatment after taking a knock to the head in that last scramble.
90' + 3'
VAN BUYTEN ALMOST GETS HIS HATTRICK!!!!! Another hoofed ball into the box leads to a penalty box scramble, with Gomez at the thick of it. The rebound is eventually spilled to DVB, who fires the ball wide from about 12 yards out with Wetklo scrambling to recover!!! What a story that would have been!!!
90' + 1'
90' + 1'
Bayern taking to the skies in the dying embers of the game. Everything is being pumped into the box, but the Mainz defence are doing well to win the first headers.
We're into three minutes of injury time...
Mainz have made an admirable attempt in the last few minutes to stem the Bayern tide. They've threatened twice on the counter, the latter chance ending with an Allagui shot into the stands from a tight angle. Great play from the hosts to keep the ball in the opposition half, you know what they say, attack is the best form of defence!
Ooh, Van Buyten gets his head on it again, but this time sends it wide of the post! What a unique and unlikely hat trick that would have been!
Another free kick in the Mainz half for Bayern. No surprises who stands over it, and who makes his way into the area...
Yellow Card Christian Wetklo
Wetklo gets booked for complaining after Fathi called for a foul
The impressive Caligiuri leads the break, picking up a loose ball from Muller and feeding Allagui on the break, but the striker cannot make the most of it!
Bayern now in control of the game. Mainz need to dig their heels in if they want to hold on to this famous scalp.
Gomez through on goal...but foul called!!! The German striker was a little to eager in leading with his arm to hold off Bungert, that the referee calls for an infringement.
Bayern almost equalise!!! Alaba takes the ball on the bounce and shot outside the box, and forces Wetklo into a brilliant, one handed stop low at the far post! Great play all around!
Assist Toni Kroos
Goal Daniel Van Buyten
3-2!!!! DVB AT THE DOUBLE!!!!! Kroos with another peach of a delivery from a free kick 30 yards out, which finds the big Belgian a few yards from goal. this time, he sidefoots it home unmarked to restore some hope for the visitors! What a finish in store!!!!
Here go Mainz again!!! Caligiuri breaks completely free on the left flank, and his early cross just runs Allagui out of position. He still manages to get a shot off, but Bayern manage to deal with it, it was harmless in the end.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
Assist Andreas Ivanschitz
Goal Niko Bungert
...WHICH IS TURNED IN FOR A THIRD!!!!!! Ivanschitz plays in a delightful corner right into the heart of the box, and Bungert evades his marker to head home from the edge of the six yard area!!! Mainz in dreamland!!!
Soto's free kick is deflected off the wall for a corner...
Great play by Allagui to win a free kick on the edge of the box. He twists and turns between Alaba and Badstuber, tricking the German into a foul.
What. A. Chance. A great cross by Rafinha finds the striker unmarked in the six yard area, but from point blank range, he heads it high and wide!!!! Should have done a lot better, at least get it on target!!!
Caligiuri almost gets another right away! Muller plays the goalscorer in on le left, but after cutting in on his right, he shoots straight at Neuer who, this time, makes the save!
Yellow Card M. Gómez
Now Gomez enters the book with a striker's challenge borne clearly out of frustration.
Assist Andreas Ivanschitz
Goal Marco Caligiuri
GOAL! OUT OF NOTHING! 2-1 MAINZ!!! Its Caligiuri who comes up with the goods! He picks up the ball in midfield, dribbles for a bit and lets loose with a shot towards the left post that evades Neuer and goes in!!!
Some slick interplay from Bayern again instigated by Ribery ends up with a Lahm shot from about 20 yards out that the keeper saves!
Ribery again getting the better of Pospech, sprinting towards the byline and whipping in a great cross, but Svensson clears it with an excellent header.
Corner for Bayern, played in by Badstuber and punched clear by Wetklo, who gets almost enough distance on it as a goal kick!
Yellow Card Niko Bungert
Bungert gets booked for bringing down Olic, who rolled past him and was on his way into dangerous territory.
Mainz not daunted, and Pospech counters down the right channel, cuts inside and sends a low cross into goal, but Badstuber intercepts and hoofs it clear.
Assist Toni Kroos
Goal Daniel Van Buyten
EQUALIZER!!!!!! Free kick on the right by Kroos is played in menacingly at chest height. There, Van Buyten sneaks in at the near post and plants a glancing header just past the reach of Wetklo! Game on!!!!
DVB with a foul on Allagui about 30 yards from Neuer's goal. Ivanschitz clips it forward, its flicked on by Allagui and Muller gets the last header on it, but it doesnt trouble Neuer in any way.
Pospech gives the ball away in his own half, Ribery picks it up and advances in space down the left and with teammates queuing up in the box, he skews his cross horribly and it goes out for a goal kick.
Allagui picks up a somewhat fortuitous pass from Caligiuri on the left flank, beats Van Buyten for pace but also beats the byline - goalkick for Bayern.
Yellow Card Luiz Gustavo
Gustavo clips Baumgartlinger from behind, yellow card shown.
Chance for Caliguiri! Mainz attack on the break, Muller releasing Ivanshitz, who in turn feeds Caliguiri through on goal, but with Van Buyten keeping him honest, he can only fire his finish miles over the bar!
Ribery bursting past Pospech for the second time in quick sucession, but Soto is across quickly to cover. Great teamwork and awareness by the Colombian.
Ribery in behind on the left, and hits a deep cross in list before it crosses the byline. However, it is too far behind Gomez and too far ahead of Muller, and is headed out for a corner.
Robben went through a rigorous warmup during the interrval, we will most likely see him at some point.
Here we go again!!!!
Some encouraging stuff from Mainz here, who will no doubt be beaming at their first half display. Bayern were beginning to get the game on a more even footing as the half drew to a close, but in reality, their play has not warranted any different of a scoreline. Will Die Roten find a way back in the second half? Join us to find out!
45' + 1'
And we're done here for 15 minutes as the ref blows for half-time!
Offside...but close call for Mainz! A 50-50 between Ivanschitz and Lahm about 45 yards from goal somehow evades a crowd of players and rolls through to Gomez behind the defence, but his shot is saved by Wetklo before the assistant's flag chalks off the play!
Ribery and Lahm combine down the left, and the skipper is tripped up by Bungert for another set piece. However, Kross' ball in is too deep and ends up being an easy grab for the keeper.
Bayern pump it into the area again, but Gomez can't get any change in the air out of Pospech, who gets up well to get rid of the danger.
Kroos' set piece sparks a short game of head tennis around the 18 yard area, which is eventually cleared by Caligiuri.
Muller goes down again under another robust challenge. Bungert goes through the back of him, winning a free kick about 35 yards out on the left.
Good strike by Boateng! The defender charges forward once more, taking it onto his left foot from 25 yards out and firing towards the bottom corner, but Wetklo gets down low to make a smart stop.
BAYERN HIT THE BAR!!! From the resulting free-kick after Fathi's foul, Badstuber sends a ball in that confuses Wetklo, forcing the keeper to push the ball onto the crossbar!
Long ball out of defence by Boateng sparks a chase between Fathi and Muller on the right hand channel. The defender challenges the German, who goes down in a heap writhing in pain.
Allagui has another chance, a great ball into the area is met by his head, but he does not connect with it properly and it goes out for a goal kick.
Close from the hosts again! Caligiuri picks out Ivanschitz down the left, and only the boot of Van Buyten prevents Allagui from sliding home the low cross from five yards out!
Luis Gustavo makes some headway in the middle, and picks out Muller about 20 yards from goal. he twists and turns, creates an inch of space for the shot but fires it tamely wide. Meanwhile, Soto has gone down in his attempt to close down Muller and will need some brief treatment.
Once again, the visitors managing to evade the Bayern midfield. A through ball nearly picks out Allagui at the top of the box, but Neuer is off his line quickly to head clear with authority.
The home fans making a lot of noise, as their team have made a thoroughly impressive start to the match. Bayern have a game on their hands, and need to get their act together.
Mainz break with purpose again. Muller finds space on the right and plays in Caligiuri down the middle, He takes a tough and lets fly from 25 yards out with an awkward bouncing shot that Neuer gets down to smother.
Good save by Wetklo! The ball is played into the area, and Gomez's presence harries Pospech into a poor header, which reaches Ribery. However, his shot is parried by the Mainz keeper!
Yellow Card Julian Baumgartlinger
First booking of the afternoon. Ribery gets a step on Baumgartlinger, who sticks out a boot to send the Frenchman flying.
Bayern's attack breaks down again. Boateng tries to get something going down the right. However, he hit his pass long into space when Gomez pulled up short to recieve the ball to feet.
Here go Mainz again! With consumate ease, they pass their way through the Bayern midfield, Soto eventually releasing Muller on the right edge of the box. He lets the ball run across his body and fires a shot that flashes across the face of Neuer's goal!
Bayern really need to sort themselves out here. They have not been dominated by any stretch, but Mainz have managed to create a few good openings. Boateng in particular has looked shaky, playing Ivanschitz onside and slipping on the goal line forr the first goal and getting caught out of position for the Austrian's chance moments ago.
SHOULD HAVE BEEN 2-0!!!! What a chance for the hosts! Some slick play at the top of the box sees Soto chip a delightful pass into the path of the onrushing and unmarked Ivanschitz on the penalty spot, but he volleys the finish way too high! What a waste!!!
Bayern shellshocked. Heynckes has abandoned the brief arrangement of Muller through the centre and Gomez on the right, with both players switching to their natural positions.
Assist Nicolai Müller
Goal Andreas Ivanschitz
MAINZ OPEN THE SCORING!!!! Muller spins away from Gustavo near the halfway line and slides a through pass through to Ivanschitz. The Bayern defence is caught ball watching, and Ivanschitz rounds Neuer and finishes from an acute angle past Boateng on the line for his fourth of the season!
Mainz getting sloppy here, with Ivanschitz guilty of laziness on two attempted through balls in a row. Bayern counter, Muller picks it up at the top of the D, but is harried by multiple players in red and white.
Now Mainz are making some headway. Caligiuri attempts to attack down the left flank again, but this time, Boateng rushes out and puts it out of danger for a throw.
MAINZ ALMOST STEAL AN OPENER!!! Caligiuri advances down the left side of the area, and slides a shot across the face of goal that Neuer tips back into danger. While still on the floor, the Bayern keeper questionably appeals for a foul, which is not given, and Allagui picks up the loose ball and puts it wide!
A little strange in the initial stages, Gomez attacking the ball on the right while Muller looks to recieve the ball through the centre. Tactical decision or have Bayern just not settled yet?
Bayern controlling possession in the initial stages of the game, not causing any real threat but slowly establishing a foothold.
And we're off!!!
We're moments away from kickoff, the teams are going through the pre-match rituals...
Both Dortmund and Gladbach are ahead of Bayern by a single point after victories on Saturday - the former topping Schalke 2-0 in the Ruhr derby while the latter won 3-0 at Koln. Can Bayern make their game in hand count today, and regain the lead at the top of the table?
The main talking point as far as selections go is the demotion of Arjen Robben to the Bayern bench. The Dutchman played from the start in their 1-0 loss to Dortmund last weekend, a decision that was probably made a week too early as he was noticeably rusty in that fixture. Heynckes has reverted to this season's familiar attacking quartet of Kroos, Ribery, Muller and Gomez.
Bayern Munich: Neuer; Boateng, Van Buyten, Badstuber, Lahm; Luiz Gustavo, Alaba; Muller, Kroos, Ribery; Gomez. Subs: Olic, Petersen, Robben, Pranjic, Contento, Rafinha, Butt.
Mainz: Wetklo; Pospech, Bungert, Svensson, Malik Fathi; Baumgartlinger, Soto; Caligiuri, Ivanschitz, Muller; Allagui. Subs: Muller, Schonheim, Stieber, Malli, Gavranovic, Choupo-Moting, Ujah.
