D. Agger 43'
So that's it from me on a good day for anyone of a Liverpool persuasion. It was a disappointing afternoon for Southampton, but they have shown enough in recent weeks to suggest that they are more than capable of staying in the division. Until next time, this is Nicholas McGee, signing off!
Southampton weren't able to muster anything in injury time, and it is Liverpool who claim the three points that their performance just about justified. The Reds claim back to back home wins for the first time since September 2011, things are looking up for Brendan Rodgers side.
90' + 1'
Yellow Card Jamie Carragher
Suarez fires wide following good play from Sterling. There will be three minutes of added time.
Liverpool are pressing for the second but it doesn't appear to be forthcoming. One may just be enough for the hosts though, it's be disappointing fare in truth.
Despite the slender deficit, Southampton are still struggling to create anything of real note, slightly surprising given the Saints' recent form.
Liverpool should be at least two up, but while it remains 1-0 the Saints still have hope. Brendan Rodgers will hope his team can finish this one off.
Yellow Card Luis Suárez
Luis Suarez what are you doing? Great play from Liverpool as Gerrard lays the ball off out wide before surging into the box, the midfielder receives the return cross on the edge of the six-yard box before chipping a cross into the path of Suarez who elects to punch the ball over the bar instead of nodding the ball into the net. The Uruguayan is booked and will now miss the game against West Ham.
Enrique stings the palms of Gazzaniga. The hosts are creating the majority of the chances in this one.
Southampton are getting in some good areas, but their game has lacked the fluidity showcased in the win over Newcastle. The Saints have 14 minutes to address that situation.
Good opportunity for Liverpool as Martin Skrtel heads wide from a corner. It's all a bit too easy for the Reds right now.
The game has died down a little in the past few minutes, Liverpool are in control and that does not look like changing anytime soon.
Wonderful stuff from Jose Enrique, the Spaniard surges forward from the left before linking up with Suarez, the left-back cannot apply the finishing touch however, as he shoots just wide.
A little bit of a break in play here as Ramirez receives treatment for a head injury.
Adam Lallana is beginning to look a real threat for Southampton when they get forward, however Liverpool have started to dictate possession once again, which is obviously not good news for the visitors.
Nigel Adkins' visitors are looking much better going forward, but are yet to do anything to cause Liverpool any problems. This one is nicely poised.
Southampton, unsurprisingly, are playing a much higher line than they did in the first. That may be a dangerous game, but it hasn't cost them so far with the hosts struggling to stay onside when they get forward.
Ramirez hits a long-range effort which flies well over the bar. A bit of a waste from the midfielder after Jose Enrique had carelessly conceded possession.
There hasn't been much of a flow to the game since the restart, the visitors have improved but not enough to really trouble Liverpool defensively.
More pressure from the visitors, who win another corner, however the delivery is disappointing from Ramirez and the chance falls to nothing.
Positive start to the second period from Southampton, as a Jason Puncheon shot is deflected away for a corner by Agger, the resulting corner is well cleared by the home side.
Southampton get the second half underway.
Michael Oliver blows his whistle for half-time at Anfield. Liverpool lead and deservedly so, the Reds have dominated the opening 45 minutes and Daniel Agger's headed goal was just reward for a superb display. Southampton will need to show more intent going forward if they are to take anything from this game.
45' + 1'
It could have been 2-0 to the home side, as Sterling heads wide from a Jonjo Shelvey cross. Southampton immediately counter and go close themselves as Lambert sees Reina off his line and decides to have a go, the Spanish scrambles back and is able to tip the ball behind for a corner.
There will be one additional minute at the end of the first half.
Assist Glen Johnson
Goal Daniel Agger
Liverpool finally have their break through and it's Daniel Agger who has given them a deserved lead. Suarez crashes the free-kick won seconds earlier against the bar, however Glen Johnson recovers the rebound before delivering a pinpoint cross into the path of the Danish defender, who heads past Gazzaniga and into the top corner.
Free-kick in a dangerous area for Liverpool as Gaston Ramirez brings down compatriot Suarez.
We're just seven minutes from the interval and Southampton will be much the happier of the two sides, the Saints have been constantly on the back-foot but look like heading into the break on level terms.
End-to-end stuff at Anfield, Rickie Lambert hits a free-kick wide of Pepe Reina's post before Jonjo Shelvey cannons an effort against the woodwork following a quick Liverpool counter.
Southampton have the worst defence in the Premier League, however you wouldn't know it on this evidence, the men from the south coast are defending effectively, deep and in numbers.
Another let-off for the visitors as a long ball from Pepe Reina deflects behind off Maya Yoshida for a corner with Luis Suarez lurking dangerously.
Great football from Liverpool as Joe Allen and Suarez play a one-two before the latter's shot is well saved by Gazzaniga from close range.
Lots of huff and puff from Liverpool so far but they have lacked incisiveness, Glen Johnson has a shot easily saved by Gazzaniga.
Jose Enrique plays a wonderful ball into the path of Suarez, who controls with only Gazzaniga to beat, however play is pulled back after the Uruguayan is adjudged to have handled by referee Michael Oliver.
Frustration appears to be growing at Anfield, they haven't quite been able to fashion a clear opening and for that you have to give great credit to a well organised Southampton defence.
Not much of an atmosphere at Anfield right now, it is the Saints' fans who are making the most noise, and they must be impressed with how their side have performed in the opening 15 minutes.
Liverpool are well in command at the moment but Southampton are continuing to defend excellently. Nathaneil Clyne wins the first battle of two of England's brightest stars as he produces a superb tackle to preven Raheem Sterling from breaking free down the left-flank.
First chance for Liverpool as Jose Fonte fails to clear Jose Enrique's diagonal ball and Jonjo Shelvey fires straight at Paulo Gazzaniga.
Liverpool are beginning to dominate possession and are enjoying a good spell of pressure, however Southampton have settled well and the hosts are yet to create any goalscoring opportunities.
Early chance for the visitors as Rickie Lambert dispossess Lucas Leiva in midfield before powering a low effort just wide of the post.
Liverpool get the action underway!
The teams emerge from the tunnel and we are just seconds away from kick-off.
So it's a return to the starting line-up for Lucas Leiva, can the Brazilian inspire Brendan Rodgers' side to victory. We'll find out over the course of the next hour-and-a-half.
Southampton: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Yoshida, Fonte, Shaw, Puncheon, Cork, Schneiderlin, Lallana, Ramirez, Lambert. Subs: Kelvin Davis, Hooiveld, Steven Davis, Rodriguez, Ward-Prowse, Mayuka, Reeves
Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Jose Enrique, Lucas, Allen, Shelvey, Gerrard, Sterling, Suarez. Subs: Jones, Sahin, Henderson, Downing, Carragher, Suso, Wisdom.
We start, as always with the two team line-ups...
Good afternoon and welcome to Goal.com's live coverage of Liverpool against Southampton. I'm Nicholas McGee and I'll be taking you through the next 90 minutes as the Merseysiders aim to bounce back against a Saints' side that has been in good form in recent weeks.
