The champions have suffered on Merseyside over the last three seasons and face a team rejuvenated under Kenny Dalglish, with both managers suffering selection headaches

PROBABLE LINEUPS

LIVERPOOL

Reina
Kelly, Skrtel, Carragher, Enrique
Kuyt, Gerrard, Lucas, Adam, Downing
Suarez

MANCHESTER UNITED

De Gea
Smalling, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra
Nani, Fletcher, Anderson, Young
Rooney, Chicharito

Liverpool look set to welcome back captain Steven Gerrard to a starting role after his substitute appearance in the Merseyside derby before last week's international break, and should be near enough full strength.

Manager Kenny Dalglish could well select Andy Carroll up front to partner Luis Suarez if Gerrard isn't quite ready to start, as he did against Everton.

Sir Alex Ferguson will have to decide on who marshalls the centre of midfield for his side, with Darren Fletcher finally recovered from his various injury problems.

Meanwhile, the mental state of Wayne Rooney could play a factor in whether the striker plays, and while you should by no means bet against Sir Alex starting the club's talisman, don't be too surprised if the manager decides to him out.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • No goalkeeper has made more saves than David de Gea has in the Premier League this season. The Spaniard has made 32 stops.
  • Nemanja Vidic has been sent off three times against Liverpool in the Premier League, the only player to have been dismissed this many times against a single opponent.
  • Manchester United have scored eight goals from set-pieces this season, the most in the Premier League.

The Uruguayan has been in fine form this season, and is never far away from controversy either, as the Merseyside derby proved when he was involved in Jack Rodwell's dismissal, and also won a penalty and scored a goal for his side. The striker was electrifying in the corresponding fixture last season, directly involved in all three of Dirk Kuyt's goals, with a mazy dribble past four defenders in the box to tee up the Dutchman being a memorable moment for all Kopites.

It will be interesting to see if the manager keeps his faith in the striker, and whether the England man will be able to cope with the pressure at a ground where he will always provoke an extreme reaction having previously played for Everton. While his ability is without question, doubts about his temperament will now hang over his head.

Editor's Prediction

It is bound to be a tight and fiercely fought affair between the two sides, and while Ashley Young will cause the right-back Martin Kelly considerable problems, Liverpool should do some damage through the livewire Suarez up front. Expect an entertaining draw.
